I'm positive that after the Doctor's deadly game of 'the floor is lava' was first broadcast, young fans up and down the country tried to imitate their hero, probably wrecking half the house in the process!
It's the first Cyberman story since The Invasion not counting the Scope specimen seen in Carnival Of Monsters and while it's not the silver giants' greatest hour, it *is* the first time we see a Cyber Leader (designated by black handlebars).

Barring two cameo appearances in The War Games and Carnival of Monsters, this is the first time the Cybermen have appeared since 21 December 1968. This was 19 April 1975, so it was *six and a half years* since they last cropped up in any major role.

Last Cyberman story was The Invasion including the villain Tobias Vaughan played by Kevin Stoney. He is under the mask as the elderly Vogan politician Tyrum. 'Genesis of the Daleks' may have been turned into a commercially available vinyl, but 'Revenge of the Cybermen' was the first to appear on a video cassette. This was apparently due to fan demand, although the identity of the fan in question has never been revealed. It's an odd decision. While the turntable version of 'Genesis...' excises the sub-plot about the Time Ring in order to make it self-contained, the only editing performed on 'Revenge...' was to remove the titles, end credits and recaps; turning it into a feature-length production. Thus, part one is littered with references to things the less knowledgeable would have no idea about, unless they bought a reference book on the subject. It's also very drawn out. But at least we have the Cybermen, for the first time since 1968; now sporting flares on their trousers AND their heads.

In a season which has featured scientific fascists posing nuclear war, body horror, torture, eugenics, scientific fascists (again!) - this story feels a little bit adrift of the main thoroughfare. Much of that is down to the change in production team. In an effort to smooth the transition from one Doctor to the next, Barry Letts had brought in Cybermen co-creator Gerry Davis to produce his first script for them since the 1960s. But just as with Terry Nation, Davis hadn't really moved with the times. His script owed more to the Wheel in Space (if it was a casino) and the regular cast evoked the 2nd Doctor, Jamie and Zoe, rather than their mid-1970s equivalent. Robert Holmes re-wrote it but it's one of his few misses and I think you detect just how divorced the Hinchcliffe/Holmes axis were from the idea of bringing back an old monster just for the hell of it.

I know Revenge of the Cybermen has its fans, but unfortunately, I am just not one of them and having this come right after Genesis of the Daleks really doesn't do this one any favours at all. There is some impressive location footage to be found and Part One isn't that bad, but the Vogans are dull, Carey Blyton's music still grates on me, the plot is by-the-numbers, and they literally do nothing that's new, fresh, or exciting with one of the best monsters in Doctor Who history. The Cybermen are incredibly lacklustre, coupled with the worst Cyber-voices, and the Cyber-Leader especially being far too emotive. Not the worst Cyberman story, but it comes close.
