Between the broadcast of parts one and two, William Hartnell, the First Doctor, passed away. Coincidentally, he died during broadcast of a serial that served to reintroduce the Cybermen. His final solo appearance, The Tenth Planet, as the Doctor occurred during the serial that introduced them.

...And apparently all because Sarah happens to know the name "Kellman". Quite a leap of "logic". =:o\
That scene would work fine with a human interrogator (played by a decent actor!) being startled by the name, then narrowing their eyes as they watch Sarah's face for signs of deception, and put the pieces together that they hadn't previously considered, saying, "OK, so they have this rocket... but they haven't used it. Which means it doesn't work, yes?". And then smiling smugly. But with a semi-robotic face behind a blank mask, and no indication (in this story, or sadly most others) that the cybermen are all that canny about reading human emotions or body language, the sudden switch to believing her just comes out of nowhere.

For all its faults, Revenge of the Cybermen is a guilty pleasure. It was one of the first stories I watched as a child and my brother and I would reenact sequences from it all of the time (swinging off the door pretending the floor was electrified in particular!). It's a shame the Cybermen's characterisation is way off because the suits are great. I lament the fact Holmes and Hinchcliff didn't revisit the Cybermen because at their core they're the perfect monster for their Gothic/Horror vision of the series.

I read it that Voga was the alliances easy access to weaponisable gold. Gold isn't that rare but it's hard to get to on terrestrial planets. The Cybermen while incapable of vengeful thought act in that manner for psychological warfare reasons. That Voga and Mondas drift around so much is probably not a coincidence. Tom's era is full of exposition heavy stories. Almost everything we know about Gallifrey comes from one ramble in one story. The same is true of 51st century Earth. @@davidgeisler9885 it’s a good question, and as you say DW ratings from us all are always personal taste and a combination of factors
There’s no science behind this, it’s all destroyable! But here goes...
Due to my age it was more or less the first story I ever saw, and with it not being on Earth, it was just so special
Digging deeper, I loved the cybermen outfits, and yes of course in hindsight the voices aren’t what they should be, and hands on hips is very odd (!) but I still like this version even today, not easy to kill, fired from their foreheads which was cool
Loved the space station from Ark In Space, so, nice to see it again
Good performances by all of the supporting cast on the station, and the baddie
The vogans at the time I thought looked amazing, and loved their political arguments etc
Of course today it looks a bit ropey and a bit dull, but it did bring that nice location to us, their chambers on Voga, and the caves, their funny guns (no gold dust in them lol) etc
The peril of the bomb walk felt suspenseful, back then
I didn’t know til decades later that it was an emergency story, hastily rewritten, re use of props etc
The age old moan of mine is there of course, that we have a planet called Voga, but no sense of it being any bigger than a few rooms and caves...what of the rest of the planet ?!
I don’t know, I just love this story. It’s hard to put my finger on it.
As you say David it’s all about opinions, and in polls for all the stories, it regularly comes three quarters of the way down the list!
So I do know I’m in a minority, even though a few of my closest mates all also love this one, and it always surprises me that they do

Also The Doctor does explain that transmatting Sarah Jane will apparently remove the Cybermat venom from her system because the transmat should on carry her molecules not the poisons. Also the buckle detonation wasn't actually the most powerful bomb in the universe, but a secondary explosive... Not sure why, maybe so the other two would have a chance of carrying the third bomb still if one went off

Later on, when I became a 'self aware' fan and fanzines were morphing into Dr Who Weekly, a very great deal of your own observations were being made. It warms my hearts to hear a new generation saying the very same things - though you do emphasize the failings with much greater style and I congratulate you on that. I have noticed that it seems to be the Cyber-Controllers who seem to express a lot of emotion, both here and in stories like "Earthshock." I like to think that the controllers are allowed more emotional range as part of an effort to give them more imaginative thinking. It's why you never see the Cybermen at logical impasses with races like the Movellans.

I'm not so keen on the head-mounted guns, as the Cybermen have to bend their bodies to fix on a target, then locate and push a button on their sides to shoot, which seems rather labour-intensive. The Troughton era's sleek, hand-held Cyberweapons were so much more efficient and convincing.

    1) With the transmat curing Sarah, the doctor says that the transmat should only teleport the human parts and as the poison isn't human it would get left behind.
    2) The cyber leader says that the buckle is attached to a second smaller explosive rather than the bomb itself.
I know these are nit picks but I thought I'd just say

That just creates even more problems though, like why didn’t the rest of the crew use the teleport? And why did the Cybermen let the buckle create a smaller explosion when the whole point of the mission is to use the bigger explosion to destroy Voga? That buckle failsafe just gives the three of them a way to prevent the Cybermen’s plans via self sacrifice.

I would agree it's far from the strongest 4th Doctor story, and it also had a hell of a lot of things work against it beforehand because it followed Genesis of the Daleks, but as someone going back and seeing the episodes for the first tie...I found I actually enjoyed them. Though I do admit that might be naivety on my part, or the fact I'm watching this with open eyes and no real expectations, might make me a bad judge on the episodes, and I accept that.

Just agreeing with and clarifying a comment I seem below: Opening the buckle *DOESN'T* set off the main bomb. It causes the *buckle* to explode, thus killing the person carrying it, but leaving the main bomb ready to explode at the same time as the others are triggered. Yeah, so it won't be in the ideal location, but it will still do a lot of damage to the planet. So that plot point (unusually!) does make perfect sense, it just wasn't explained well. As you noted, the script really needed one more draft. Alas, it was due to go into studio ahead of everything else in the season (bar "Robot", which had been shot on the back of the previous season), so... [SAD SHRUG] =:o\
As a 9.7-year-old kid, though, I loved this story. I'd never seen cybermen in action before, just in black & white photos, so I had no idea how "wrong" they were in this one, and just enjoyed the ride (especially the Sarah-Harry dynamic!).

hmmm, I remember Revenge when it was first broadcast and the excitement of seeing the mythical Cybermen back in Doctor Who papered over a lot of the cracks in the plot (irrelevant fact: I had inside info on their return having visited Wookie Hole for Easter 1975 and been told by the tour guide that Doctor Who had been filming scenes with Cybermen there a few months earlier).
In retrospect I accept that the story has its problems, but in the pre-Star Wars era scenes like the Cybermen boarding the beacon were incredibly exciting (and I have always enjoyed the totally unfair and unjustified random disdain shown to poor Harry Sullivan).
I would argue that it is only 'relatively' poor considering the strength of stories in the 1975 - 77 seasons... maybe it is just nostalgia?

Revenge of the Cybermen is one of my favourite Doctor Who episodes and Cybermen stories of all time. It had a good story. Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen and Ian Marter again gave good performances. David Collings gave a good performance as Vorus. Christopher Robbie did a good job as the Cyberleader. The Wookey Hole caves was the ideal filming location for Voga. Having the actors playing the Cybermen do the voices instead of a voice over actor was a very interesting idea. Sarah Jane Smith getting attacked by the Cybermat in the cliffhanger of Series 1 is one of Doctor Who's best cliffhangers. Ronald Leigh-Hunt later went on to guest star in the 1980 Blake's 7 episode "Children of Auron" as C.A. One. In that episode of Blake's 7, Servalan delibertly unleashes a virus on Cally's planet as part of her plot to use Auron's clong facility to create children. In Revenge of the Cybermen, Professor Kellman manipulates the only surviving Nerva Beacon crew members into thinking the rest of the crew were infected by a virus (In reality Kellman used a Cybermat to poison the crew) as part of Professor Kellman and Vorus's scheme to lure the Cybermen to Nerva Beacon and it use it as a trap so they can destroy the Cybermen with the Skystriker rocket. Revenge of the Cybermen is Doctor Who at it's best and one of the best of the classic series and of the Tom Baker era.

    Points I think you Missed:
    > I'm pretty sure that the booby-trap on the bomb is a secondary explosive in the buckle, not the bomb itself (preventing someone from using onboard the ark/beacon and wiping out the Cybermen).
    > Completely ignored the fact that Kelman was a double-agent and was actually working for the Vogans. His plan was to set a trap for the Cybermen, luring them onto the ark/beacon so that the Vogans could use their rocket to destroy them. Kelman was an important character, and his role in the story was never fully explored in this review.
    > The Cyber-War is said to have been a long time ago, one of the crew even says "Surely, Cybermen died out centuries ago?", so perhaps the lack of preparation for a Cyber-Invasion on the part of the Vogans was because the war was such a long time ago that weapons have deteriorated or been lost. The Vogans had spent most of their existence since the war hiding, and this was their defense. Their chose to hide from their enemies rather than fight them.
    > I'm not sure it's ever mentioned that the Vogans assisted with Glitter-Gun technology. The Doctor describes it as a "glorious triumph, for human ingenuity". The Vogans are not human, and I do not recall it being stated that Vogans gold was used in the glitter gun. This may explain why the Vogans do not have any. Furthermore, if the discovery of the Cybermen's weakness of gold was discovered by Humans, not Vogans, then perhaps the Vogans don't know about this weakness.
