Epson DX5 Print Head Recovery with Print Head Doctor 3

  • Epson DX5 are one of the most difficult print heads to recover. They are easily damaged with the excess pressure, ultrasonic vibrations, and chemistry of the fluids. Print Head Doctor is the only way to clean DX5 print heads safely and effectively.
    Epson DX5 heads come with different variations of the manifold. The adapter of Print Head Doctor allows mounting of all kinds of DX5 manifolds. On this video we are working with a Mutoh Valuejet 1614 print head which requires an additional riser block for a proper mount.
    We insert a so-called Ultrasonic Dampening Plate in the tank. The purpose for this plate is to reduce the amount of ultrasonic energy delivered to a print head and thus minimize the risk of print head damage.
    Our first set-up is Reverse Flushing with Suction Method. All eight ports of a print head are connected to the input filters on the Print Head Doctor's tower. Both output ports must be capped and the Relief Valve must be open. We use the Syphon cycle (F6), which keeps the fluid pump on for 30 minutes, and the ultrasound is turned on at a 50% duty cycle. The first thing we see is that some tubes are sucking in a lot of air, which signals a poor connection between the print head and the tubing of Print Head Doctor. As we tightened both mounting screws a little, all connections were fixed except for one (the 4th port from the left): it kept sucking in air. Then we detached the tubing and tested the 4th port with a syringe filled with the same recovery fluid (1DX). The port appears to have a crack on the side.
    Next, we replaced the plastic manifold of the DX5 head with a new one (yes, they are available), re-installed the print head and repeated the Reverse Flushing cycle. This time everything looked good and we allowed the full 30-minute cycled to finish.
    After that, we switched the set-up for a normal (forward) flushing and repeated cycle F6. Note that we kept the pressure at all times at 5 psi, as it's the recommended safe pressure for DX5 print head. At such a low pressure it's impossible to assess the condition of the nozzles by lifting the print head, as all you see is the fluid dripping down. 5 psi is definitely not enough to form a curtain of straight streams coming out of the nozzles, and we cannot increase the pressure without damaging the print head. Therefore the only way to check the print head is by trying to print with it on a printer.
    If such test reveals incomplete nozzle recovery, but some progress in the nozzle condition, we can give it another Forward Flush cycle with the same fluid. If no progress was spotted, we can try switching to the next recovery fluid and repeating the Forward Flushing cycle again. Reverse Flushing won't be necessary anymore. We should use only 2 cycles: Syphon (with 50% ultrasound) or LPRF Foam-Free (with no ultrasound at all, but safest for a print head).

    Indeed. And the printhead alone is quite expensive too.
    One might notice how easy the disassembly are, as it's made to be service-friendly (relatively speaking, compared to other printers)
    For small consumers that doesn't need huge print areas I think laser printers will be more cost-effective in the long run.

    We have a new model of Print Head Doctor: model 6. It was designed specifically for Epson print heads, as these heads require extra care. They are too easy to damage with excessive pressure or ultrasound. Model 6 provides only a minimal pressure to a print head, while all the work is done by the vacuum applied to the Reverse Flush cap, keeping the print head safe.
    Price for PHD6 is $1500 without the adapters. An Epson DX5 adapter is $250 plus you'll also need a Sonic RF Cap for $150.

    Do you have an idea about what percentage of the print head can be recovered with this system. I'm thinking to buy one to start to fix a lot machines and charge the people to clean

    • @digitalsigntech
      @digitalsigntech  Před 5 lety +1

      The recovery rate depends on how "old" is the clog. If a print head is fresh off the printer, the success rate is over 90%. For badly clogged eco-solvent Epson heads the success rate is around 60%. UV heads are much worse, with a success rate of 50%. I recommend using our new model (PHD15), which can automatically switch the fluid flow direction and thus run the recovery programs without any operator intervention. If you want to chat about it, my Whatsapp is +1-905-782-6274. Vladimir.

    the printhead doctor is a great idea, only i can buy 2.5 DX5 printheads for this price so not worth for me.
    I don't know why you guys complain so much about epson printheads. is there anything better on the market you can satisfy 99% of the customers with and run eco solvent ink for 25$ the liter. I've used a dx5 head for 10 months now printing 5 days a week at least 8 hours. at night i throw some cleaning fluid under the printhead and in the morning it runs great again.

    • @digitalsigntech
      @digitalsigntech  Před 6 lety

      Your chances of recovering a UV print head with a fully cured ink inside are close to zero. However, if the ink isn't completely cured, the head can still be recovered. It's hard to tell the success rate, it depends on many factors.

    Pocas posibilidades de recuperación si ese cabezal estuvo antes en un equipo chino que usualmente así es,son cabezales reciclados .y ya tienen poco tiempo de vida seguramente después de varios baños ,parezca que se destapa el cabezal .pero falta lo importante cómo se encuentra el sistema electrónico del cabezal ?
    Ahora bien ver pasar solvente no indica que el cabezal este limpio podría tener ,tinta seca en el interior y seguir tapando el cabezal muy común por cierto en ese tipo de cabezales ,porque usualmente estos se utilizan con diferentes tipos de tintas y esto dña el cabezal.ahora quiero ver un test de cabezal al final .porque es muy fácil mostrar salir solvente .quiero verlo en acción final ya con temperatura ,presión .velocidad y calidad

  • @AnthonyCreekTV
    @AnthonyCreekTV Před 12 lety

    With all of that work and labor, its probably more cost effective just to buy a new head because if the cleaning doesn't work then you wasted more money in ink than the head cost, and the head isn't the only part that messes up, you have a pump and then dampers. Those all contribute to clogging.

    Ultrasonic baths lead to depressurization of printheads! The bottom plate is peeled off from the print head!

    • @digitalsigntech
      @digitalsigntech  Před 6 lety

      We are using 75kHz ultrasonic tanks with controlled power output, and we run Epson heads at only 12.5W of sonic power. Combined with a higher frequency (75kHz is more than the standard 40kHz or 28kHz ultrasound) this makes the cleaning much safer for the print heads.

    All this mess confirms my idea that Epson printers are the most hideous crap ever designed and made. They waste litres of platinum-priced ink during their (short) lifespan and when their ill-designed printheads get clogged (every Tuesday) you have to run the gauntlet to fix them up or spend an arm and a leg for a new one (that eventually will get clogged anyway). Leave Epsons where they best belong: either on the shop shelves or at the recycling centre. They are a technological pest.
