The year is 1992, and a young Lithuanian physicist named Igor Zubovskij toils away at the Vilnius Radio Measurement Equipments Research Institute. He’s working on a microwave transceiver being built together with and for the Vostok factory of Chistopol, Russia. In addition to their production of watches, Vostok at the time was a labyrinth of departments during the Soviet era. As the Soviet Union fell, and the microwave transceiver was finished, Vostok found themselves unable to pay Igor and his colleagues. The banking infrastructure of Lithuania had collapsed. In lieu of money, Igor and colleagues received suitcases full of Vostok Komandirsky watches. Working with what he had, Igor sold all the watches within several days, and was able to pay his entire staff. With that came the decision to move forward in the business of watches.
Today, the core of Vostok Europe's creations is driven by chief designer Costa Markon. Zubovskij, a physicist by trade, and Marken, a former engineer, are an unlikely watchmaking duo. They bring a different view to what they do. All the namesakes for each model come from a Russian or Eastern European technological or historical achievement.
Vostok Europe employs a rigorous quality control process. The engines of the time piece are tested for accuracy and durability before they are mounted into the case. Once assembly is complete, each watchmaker then tests the time piece again for accuracy before it goes to another group of technicians for additional scrutiny. In the case of automatic watches, this includes a multi-day trip in the world's largest watch winder and eight drum rotating behemoth that can hold 1,200 watch heads. The time-grapher tests that the beats are marking the time correctly and gives a readout of the results.
Finally, each watch must pass a stringent water resistance test.
As each watch is packaged, Vostok Europe includes a copy of the serial number and testing results with each unit. Each Vostok Europe hand-assembled time piece undergoes a 28-point inspection process before they are shipped to the company's 32 worldwide distributors. This ensures that each watch will live up to the promise of going to extremes
