If you were buying a oled 42 plus gaming monitor what would it be I been on the fence and can't pull the trigger. Leaning towards the asus 42 4k oled. I had the new Samsung 240hz 4k smart monitor but the aspect ratio didn't work well on console for fps games. I was going too use it for my pc but I just didn't like how low it was I wish It was a bit taller. I'm using the acer predator 4k 144hz currently but they don't have hdmi 2.1 for the ps5. I play ps5 and pc and trying to find something to marry the combo so I don't need so many monitors. Any thoughts would be appreciated and if you have a link I'd order there ty

Those who struggling about the best HDR settings:
    Windows HDR calibration: 0, 800, 260
Why 800 and not 1000 - it helps to mitigate clipping (over-brighten the details)
    Monitor: Console HD + boost
Game: Lower in-game brightness (paper-white) settings. For example in Alan Wake I lower it from 200 nits to 140 nits
    OR
Just use Gaming HDR, if you ok with raised blacks and greys.
All depends on the game you play. If the game is mostly dark scenes Gaming HDR and Cinema HDR are not for me as it fills like some kind filter is enabled.

For your final review, can you please test EOTF tracking in each mode with window sizes larger than 10%? TFTCentral showed all the QD-OLED monitors are dimmer on 25%-50% sized windows when you run them in Peak 1000 mode vs HDR400 TrueBlack modes. From your description it sounds like Asus might be the first to address this issue but would be nice to see it confirmed with full EOTF measurements. Also please test for HDR black crush as some of these monitors seem to crush everything between gray levels 65-80 or near black 2%.

    • @thedisplayguy
      @thedisplayguy  Před měsícem +6

I can confirm this issue is mostly solved. I was the first to bring up the Peak1000 problems and they are very easy to spot. ASUS’s 1000 mode is only around 10% dimmer in large windows.

HUGE thank you for making the video, ASUS really dropped the ball on communication here not even mentioning the changes to the other HDR modes (But they did a great job on the tech obviously)! I am really curious as you kinda forgot to compare console hdr wihtout boost which seems to be the only "dark" mode left. Did all the modes besides it actually get brighter too compared to before? Asus only mentioned the boost but my testing showed it seems to affect all modes. Your video obviously seems to confirm tat but just double checking.

Question for other owners: had any problems with micro scratches? I took a brand new microfiber cloth with distilled water to try and remove a fingerprint smudge and it resulted in some very very small micro scratches. Seems like this is a known common issue with glossy panels from Samsungs 3rd gen lineup of QD-OLEDS. I guess because of the coating.

@@DekuDude It’s not exactly a matte coating like other monitors. It’s a unique coating invented by Samsung that they first put on their S95D OLED TV.
I actually bought the TV and didn’t mind the coating at all. No graininess like traditional matte. You can’t tell it’s there when watching in the dark (which is how I watch TV). But if there’s any light shining on the screen, then colours fade out, which is annoying.
So I would recommend it only if you play in a dark or dimly lit room.

It was already the best gaming monitor of 2024 in my opinion as its SDR performance and versatility made it the best I’ve ever tested. Two sRGB modes targeting a flat 2.2 gamma in Racing-sRGB and sRGB Cal targeting sRGB gamma all while maintaining excellent color accuracy and the ability to change color temperature and gamma if desired in Racing-sRGB.
If you leave uniform brightness off you can game using Racing-sRGB and contend with ABL but hit almost 300 nits in game which is immediately noticeable going between it and sRGB Cal which disables uniform brightness.
Then you can simply switch to DCI-P3 or Wide Gamut from Racing mode and still get 6500K with increased color gamut coverage.
Now with this HDR update it’s hands down the best money can buy in 2024.

DSC seems lossless but I can feel you lose some snappiness with it. The glossiness is perfect to me comparing to LG TVs. On LGs TVs the panel coating isn't completely flat/smooth. Looks like a wave effect. The PG32UCDM doesn't have that. On the other side , LG TVs have better blacks. Also you can use this monitor at 1080p and 240hz which is nice for competitive games.

Its really not very future proof nor up to todays standards. When you are going to drop good money on something like this you want to get your moneys worth.
