  • Traveling doesn't have to be expensive. This week we're going to Cumberland Island Georgia to see the impressive Dungeness Ruins, as well as wild horses and an otherworldly forest. As usual, after a tour, I go over how much the trip cost. Finally, I decide based on the cost and what we saw whether the trip was worth it or not. Find out what there is to see with us on Cumberland Island, Georgia.

An early Jan trip with everyone in shorts and sleeveless tops? Either an exceptional winter day or some of this video was shot on another trip? After referencing "wild horses" several times, you get it correct with "feral horses". As to bikes, even via the early or first ferry, it's not possible to travel the entire island in one day and catch the ferry to return. Grand Ave. (or the main north-south road) is often problematiic to travel via a bike in dry weather. Many folks abandon their rental bikes along the road due to difficulty of travel in the soft substrate. Biking along the beach is also problematic due to adverse winds and tides. Bikes are also restricted on some sections of beach and off the main road. Recemt years have seen closures due to more frequent tropical storms. Otherwise, a pleasant cameo of your trip but very limited in scope and detail. Also much gratitude for not collecting or showing drone video on or near the Seashore where such is prohibited. Not all producers comply with the regulations.

The Greyfield Inn is worth stopping by to see. Also, the little wood church that John F Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bissette were married in is on the island.

Cost me $15 and some boat gas. It's a nice place, the wild horses are fun to watch and if you don't mind a lot of walking then it's worth the price.

If you have your own boat you could always bring bikes. Best way to see the island, in my opinion.

@@TravelWorthTaking-wj7bmYes you can bring your own bikes, I can't ride one for medical reasons.

I think so. I have one of my five sisters who has expressed intrest in going there to take photos and make a painting or a few from them.
I have not been to the island, just around the other popular locations a couple of times and that's been a few decades ago.

I'm a professional photographer, and the island is a photographers dream for so many different reasons.

It is a beautiful place. We go every year and camp. Lyme Disease is a problem so heavy tick repellent is recommended.

Who would have thought there would have been ticks on an island you have to take a 40 minute ferry ride to get to! Thank you so much for that tip, I was only thinking sunscreen and possible mosquitoes. I’m so glad you posted that! 🙂👍🏻

There ARE ticks there! I’ve been gone 11.5 years now. Mostly, they are seed ticks. They look like a pepper shaker shook pepper on your legs. BCk then, I was told there was no Lyme disease. I have zero idea about what’s going on now.
I have symptoms and suspect that I have had it, but I’m not in a good area for good medical care. So, who knows?!?!
      Id still take precautions.
If I had to choose when to go… it would be December - April.
      Best wishes!

I live near Fort Stewart. In 2 years I can retire part time and buy a van. Maybe I can get a senior discount

Yes, winter is fantastic there. Next time I go I'll have to do an overnight camping trip for at least one night.
