    Great information about Utrecht. I am always surprised to see the old paintings of commanders on horseback looking down on the town they want to conquer, ... from a hill. We do not have hills, certainly not like that or so close to the cities. But in older times the painter wanted to present an appealing picture, and having a bird's eye view does that. Thanks Leigh, for your efforts to try to understand the country you came to live in. Much appreciated.

    The title of the video suggested it might be another superficial tourist guide-type videos, but boy was I wrong. You did a fantastic job distilling Utrecht's history whilst still maintaining to keep its beauty and unique charm in focus. I returned from a three-day stay in Utrecht a couple of days ago, and I cannot stop thinking about the city. I also can't wait to go back!

    Im a chilean tour guide, looking for a job in Utrecht, ive already read a lot about the city on the web, but definitely your video was he most entertaining way to learn.
    The music was good, an the pictures too. I watched with the English subtitles, its almost perfect, but everytime you named Utrecht it is says something different (Trek, Track, etc...), its automatically fom youtube i guess, maybe you can fix that, as is your video.

    dont think the frisii the romans encountered in those days spoke old frisian. The germanic tribes romans encountered there such as batavii and frisii have nothing to do with the frisians who with later come ti inhabit the area around 700's. The latter came from denmark and brought their language which developed into old frisian (which later developed to frisian that is still spoken today in friesland). By then the area had been deserted for centuries. The name frisians was given to them since they settled in the region once belonging to the frisii. Could be wrong here but It's easy to mix up the two.
    short story: frisii are local germanic tribes that lived there at time of roman empire. Frisian were tribes of angles/saxons who migrated centuries later into the lands of frisia (at the same time these tribes also migrated to england)

    Hhhmm... No the Dutch word for Cathedral is Kathedraal, the Dom is not a Kathedraal, it is a Dom. Dom meaning the highest church tower in the land. It has been a Cathedral until it fell in the hands of the Protestants. The Cathedral of the Bishop is a bit further down the road and is called the Catharijne Cathedral (and is where the name of the big shopping mall/railway station comes from)

    • @BondiTreasureHunter
      @BondiTreasureHunter  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi mate, thanks for the interest in the video. I can tell you like Utrecht as well :) Yes you're right about the Vecht, I'm just trying to indicate the connection to the river of the Old Rijn without getting complicated. The Domkerk is a Cathedral though, well like you say it was and it's the only Cathedral built church in the Netherlands but it changed just before the protestants . I didn't know that Dom meant the highest church tower in the land though- very cool! Thanks for letting me know 👍

    One of my brothers lives there. Definitely better as Amsterdam (became mainly a tourist city). Our Capital Den Haag (also written as The Hague) and Amersfoort are loved by the Dutch. ORANJE is of German descent. Many don't know as not into genealogy.
    My preference is Belgium (Antwerpen, Brügge etc.but also the seaside because of their great cooks..
    Having my roots north of Utrecht I am not Catholic. Left the chilly rainy country at age 10 to visit a Swiss boarding school 42 years ago - and seldom returned. Preferred traveling to and living in warm cities/counties. At 18 years straight to L.A., California, but I ended up in Cape Town (many Australian friends).
    Berlin has the most canals and long history. Maybe try your luck there too.
