Utrecht is not very well known, but that's a recent thing. For more than 1000 years Utrecht was the most well known and prestigious city in the Netherlands and beyond.
I looked into Utrecht's history to find out why it is a must see for any visitor to the Netherlands and why in 2012 the Lonely Planet ranked Utrecht in the top 10 of the worlds most unsung places!

I was born and raised in Utrecht and I am now living in USA. I really enjoyed this video and can't wait to go home and see my beloved city...
czcams.com/video/fRd82oyBBjM/video.html dan kun je deze leuke video bekijken..Bedankt.
I've recently come back from a trip to NL, I was staying in Amsterdam but a friend recommended I visited Utrecht. I'm so glad I did. It's so beautiful and I can't wait to return. Thank you for this video!
Very awesome to see a documentary from an outsider about a town that i know by heart!
Great information about Utrecht. I am always surprised to see the old paintings of commanders on horseback looking down on the town they want to conquer, ... from a hill. We do not have hills, certainly not like that or so close to the cities. But in older times the painter wanted to present an appealing picture, and having a bird's eye view does that. Thanks Leigh, for your efforts to try to understand the country you came to live in. Much appreciated.
As a Born Utrechter, living 200 meters away from the Dom Tower, I compliment you on this video. So much information and historical background information. Thank you!
You are blessed brother!...
Best history lesson ever. Really amazing job. I'm going to have a trip to Utrecht tomorrow and now I feel kinda at home, an educated turist :)
The title of the video suggested it might be another superficial tourist guide-type videos, but boy was I wrong. You did a fantastic job distilling Utrecht's history whilst still maintaining to keep its beauty and unique charm in focus. I returned from a three-day stay in Utrecht a couple of days ago, and I cannot stop thinking about the city. I also can't wait to go back!
Love it mate! Born and raised there, I haven't been in Utrecht for the past 25 years... Lovely to see it again! This Vid inspired me to go back there once again!
Love this video. I am Dutch and learned something new about the city I have lived in for a few years. Thanks for making this wonderful video!
Thanks for the reminder. Back in 1993 I did my own walking tour of Utrecht and really loved the city. I was disappointed I only had one day there, and always planned to go back... but it never happened. Loved all of Netherlands 🧡
Great video mate! The thing that make’s Utrecht a wonderful place is the fact that there are not so many tourists as in Amsterdam.
Amazing & wonderful! Well-done! I'm chasing after your other tours!
Very, very informative and very well put together. I have to say I am super impressed. Fantastic job!
This has been a very interesting documentary. I had never heard of Utrecht but it looks to be very beautiful. Thank you for this video.
Just watched this Video on the train to Utrecht and i am so happy to have learned the gripping history of this City beforehand! Thank you for the awesome video!
I LOVE The Netherlands!! Lived there 5 years!! Zwolle has some old history. Still has some of its old fort walls and old churches as well!
How very interesting - very well narrated and good videos of the town. Certainly inspired one to try and visit.
I really liked this video, Leigh! Thank you for sharing! 🥰
Thank you for telling “our” history. It’s really interesting! You did a really good job here!.. and yes I’m starting 5 years later watching your videos. ;)
My son went junior year here and I got to come too! Thanks so much for this one! I love spending cold snowy days with you watching your endeavors! From Central New York state
Very Nice and interesting video!👍 TY mate and keep up the good video's.
Roy Aarts cheers Roy glad you enjoyed it 👍
I loved this tour so much. I recently had my DNA tested, knowing that all of my Grndparents immigrated to the USA from the Netherlands. imagine my surprise to find that I'm 1/3 Denmark, so yeah, a Viking is in our past. We can trace our family back over five hundred years. Thanks for sharing your wonderful chatty self, I can tell you have a happy heart.
Well bondi I think your videos just get better and better. Some time it is magnet fishing or underwater metal detecting now it's a historical documentary. your videos are the best. please keep them coming. ps I am glad you found a gold coin at last.
This was a cool and interesting information story on the the history here.
Great story on the history of Utrecht. Well done!
I watch a lot of travel videos on youtube, and this is one of the most informative and thoughful I've ever found. Thank you!

Great video! I can see why you treasure hunt there. Spot on!
Very well done! GL & HH to you. Brian
Thanks for this vid - very informative. We'll be in Haarlem for two nights and Utrecht for five nights in late May 2023, and hope to spend at least two days enjoying the city, then use it as a base to explore both Amsterdam and south-eastern Netherlands.
Thanks for your sharing history...awesome.
most of my dutch relative are from there and I never heard of the place thanks for the video
I liked the way you explained the history of Utrecht! As a former citizen of Utrecht born in 1971 I can see the beauty again. I still give tours on the fortress near Utrecht called Fort bij Rijnauwen (great place to throw in the magnets). Maybe we have to do a meet up there and I will give you a private tour with Nicky and your new upcoming human 😜. Let me know if you are interested.
Hi Bondi, thanks a lot for your great work!
Im a chilean tour guide, looking for a job in Utrecht, ive already read a lot about the city on the web, but definitely your video was he most entertaining way to learn.
The music was good, an the pictures too. I watched with the English subtitles, its almost perfect, but everytime you named Utrecht it is says something different (Trek, Track, etc...), its automatically fom youtube i guess, maybe you can fix that, as is your video.
Good job mate!
I was born in Utrecht. I still love it so much. Moved to the U.S. I still go back every now and then. Thank you so much for your wonderful video.
Johanna Rogier-Awad UUUUUUUUU

I love your country...you are blessed!,,,
Great video 😊
I really enjoyed that.
🤙🤙
You were good but I know with the years behind you, you could knock the socks of your old self.
Really worthwhile. Many thanks. I live in Canada now but was born in Utrecht and have been back twice. A very nice city. Wonderful binnenstadt. More relaxed than Amsterdam. I've been back twice and loved it both times. Easy to get around to other towns from there too: Amersfoort, Hilversum, Weesp.....Hartelijk bedankt.
Hello Bondi, it was very intersting!! thanj you and have a nice day...;o)
oups, i start again...interesting !! thank....
Thanks mate, glad you liked it
Good History video. Thanks...:)
Paulo Portocarrero thanks Paul. Good luck to you as well ;)

Excellent, thank you.
Thanks, a good video
If you don't make travel videos for money... you should!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this walk thru Utrecht!! Thank you for sharing! I'm a new subscriber and I'm binge watching my way to your current video!😃
Ah yes, Betteridge's Law of Headlines never fails to be accurate.
Lovely video! Best place to be in the netherlands
Thanks for the video ~~ I was looking for smth like this in Russian language, but came here. I'd heard about Utrecht on history lessons, but remembered about it only due to phrase "Union of Utrecht". We had to learn historical dates, and the date of signing of this union often appeared i our test. I've already forget that date but the name of the sity remind in my memory ~~ Sorry for my English
Thats a cool story! thanks for the message mate I'm glad you enjoyed watching :)
Mad as the uk map came up I seen Leicester which is close to me then next map. Showing wiloughby on the wolds is 5 mins away nothing but a few houses no shops even the surrounding villages have nothing. Supposedly there was a medieval battle their that no one has found yet
Me being born in a small place just 3 miles outside Utrecht think you did a splendid job here, only downside is that I fear this will attract the tourists that now stampede Amsterdam .Altough the city counsel would welcome this financialy , as long as we're not drowned by people like A'dam & Venice I welcome everyone to enjoy this historic jewel
My city! You are a boss!
Its a cool city!!!
Dom is not the same for cathedral. A domchurch is the cathedral of the seat of the bisschop.
The foreigner always knows more Brian Fenwick PS Excellent history.
18:00, Yeah, I was waiting for WW-II, it's a wonder the tower in Utrecht survived Hitler and the Nazi's.
You had Ortho work done after this video. Possible Invisalign?
From Montreal, just visited Utrecht for 5days, love everything about it, can someone offer me a job[im a landscaper}😊
dont think the frisii the romans encountered in those days spoke old frisian. The germanic tribes romans encountered there such as batavii and frisii have nothing to do with the frisians who with later come ti inhabit the area around 700's. The latter came from denmark and brought their language which developed into old frisian (which later developed to frisian that is still spoken today in friesland). By then the area had been deserted for centuries. The name frisians was given to them since they settled in the region once belonging to the frisii. Could be wrong here but It's easy to mix up the two.
short story: frisii are local germanic tribes that lived there at time of roman empire. Frisian were tribes of angles/saxons who migrated centuries later into the lands of frisia (at the same time these tribes also migrated to england)
Great find... How much Is the queen like that worth?
What queen..sorry I'm not sure what part you mean?
Bondi Treasure Hunter hahaha I’m not sure if maybe I commented on the wrong video. Sorry.
yes
Was this an audition for “Getaway”?
Top city!!
Utrecht is the oldest .very nice.
Background music is too loud!
what is 1:45? the blue-white sort of flag with strange repeated shapes?
flag of Friesland, a northern province of the Netherlands.
My wife's Mother was Friesian and her brother breeds Friesian horses!
That is not the Rhine, that is the Vecht. Awesome video though
Hhhmm... No the Dutch word for Cathedral is Kathedraal, the Dom is not a Kathedraal, it is a Dom. Dom meaning the highest church tower in the land. It has been a Cathedral until it fell in the hands of the Protestants. The Cathedral of the Bishop is a bit further down the road and is called the Catharijne Cathedral (and is where the name of the big shopping mall/railway station comes from)
Hi mate, thanks for the interest in the video. I can tell you like Utrecht as well :) Yes you're right about the Vecht, I'm just trying to indicate the connection to the river of the Old Rijn without getting complicated. The Domkerk is a Cathedral though, well like you say it was and it's the only Cathedral built church in the Netherlands but it changed just before the protestants . I didn't know that Dom meant the highest church tower in the land though- very cool! Thanks for letting me know 👍
@@BondiTreasureHunter I am Dutch, being blunt when I see a "mistake" (ESPECIALLY when it comes to my city) is in my DNA. So far your video seems well received in the group with Dutch expats I shared it in. Added my own 2 cents (of course).
I am not sure what you mean with "Omly Cathedral build Church as, like I mentioned, there is the Catharijne Cathedral just 300 meters down the road

Oh Leigh...you look so young^^very funny! And this weird short hair-as a brave Student!Mate- sorry but i have a good laugh;oDDDAnd when you see me-with 20...you pee you in your boxershorts for laughters!!^^
I do like the shorter haircut.
Bonjour a vous vous faites mieux en cheveux courts
One of my brothers lives there. Definitely better as Amsterdam (became mainly a tourist city). Our Capital Den Haag (also written as The Hague) and Amersfoort are loved by the Dutch. ORANJE is of German descent. Many don't know as not into genealogy.
My preference is Belgium (Antwerpen, Brügge etc.but also the seaside because of their great cooks..
Having my roots north of Utrecht I am not Catholic. Left the chilly rainy country at age 10 to visit a Swiss boarding school 42 years ago - and seldom returned. Preferred traveling to and living in warm cities/counties. At 18 years straight to L.A., California, but I ended up in Cape Town (many Australian friends).
Berlin has the most canals and long history. Maybe try your luck there too.

SIN TAX!
Hm, informative video. But distorsion in the voice recording, various loud and low volume in the music etc.
Just a little more work and it all could have been done much better.
I’ve improved a lot since then 😉
It's actually pretty boring. Please tourists, stick to Amsterdam.
