Utrecht is one special city in the Netherlands with a unique atmosphere created by terrace restaurants and promenades right at water level along the canals, producing a delightful ambience in a historic setting, and yet also lined with modern shops and restaurants and bars. It's this wonderful split-level setting with pedestrian streets above and down below by the canals you've got the restaurants on their terraces, really quite special. And there are many other delightful aspects to the city of Utrecht. It's the fourth largest city in the Netherlands, and it's got the oldest university, and they claim the second largest collection of historic medieval buildings, second only to Amsterdam. I really feel like i'm learning something from them while enjoying the beautiful images. This goes to show that personality is more important than hi-res drone images, showing off luxurious hotels or pretty girls in designer outfits posing in their perfect angles... While this style has become the norm lately, i find it so impersonal and unrelatable, focusing on showing off rather than helping the viewers or bringing any value.
This comes from a woman in her 30s, a bit of a fashionista as well :)) ...so i'm not a bitter old person or smthg. But, i appreciate a good content when i see it and give my support ! Bravo!

Many tourists do not realize that the Netherlands are dotted with old towns, each with their own charm and history. The main railway stations are close to the city centers and on a five to ten minutes walk distance.
All reachable by train, with a frequency of about every 15 minutes.
Travel time from the train hub Utrecht usually less than 1 hour.
Students and commuters use the trains mainly from 7:00 to 8:30 and from 16:30 to 18:30, and you may avoid those rush hours.
I didn’t know places like this existed outside of movies.

A long time ago I was a theology student in this city.
It wasn't that touristy and done up then.
Reccomend the old post office, which is a striking example of art nouveau architecture.
And if you want a tailor made suit, even better tha Saville Row, there is a shop at the Oude Gracht.

Thank you for the beautiful video! It's my aperitive before I travel to Holland. After a couple of years in Britain, the difference in cleanliness and maintenance of streets and buildings is striking. Britain has many run-down areas and problems with poverty and homeless people.
Utrecht is my city for 29 years and since I've looked into the history of this city a bit, I learned that before the people had toilets, they threw the buckets empty in the canal and later pooh-boats came by, emptying them. In those days, people drank beer as much as we drink water from the tap. For the water wasn't clean enough for drinking. A very different world, isn't it?
Thank you most kindly for this great video, it was a great joy watching it. Actually Leiden University is the oldest university in the Netherlands. I studied at both universities so I'm not biased. Leiden is also after Amsterdam the town with the most historical monuments. On the other hand Utrecht has the largest festival of early music in the world lasting for ten days. I go there every year. It's my late summer vacation. I love both Leiden and Utrecht (more than Amsterdam). Very kind of you to pay attention to the Nieuwe Gracht which I find the most elegant canal in the Netherlands.

You’re right about the university, but Utrecht has more historic buildings than Leiden (but less than Maastricht and Amsterdam).

Snakesborough I assumed you were talking about monuments. I do know Leiden has the second biggest historic city centre (after Amsterdam) so you’re probably right! It’s nice that you like Utrecht so much, I completely agree with you ;) My father has a store in Leiden so I’ve been there a lot, also a beautiful city but I certainly prefer Utrecht too :)

Than you go to Manneken Pis to have a quite descent meal of French fries and kibbeling which I can barely manage to finish eating it... For only € 6,95! That'll be around 8 Dollar or so... But, you gonna love it!

Superb video! I strongly agree with your high praise for the Dutch railway system. I would suggest that visitors to the Netherlands base themselves in Utrecht, and travel from there to places like Amsterdam, Leiden and Delft. But one warning about the OV-chipkaart. You must remember to CHECK OUT at the end of each journey!
Their trains are amazing, best way to see the country because of two factors: 1) the country is easy to get around in because it is small, and 2) the trains deliver! And yes, be sure to check out your card at end of each trip, as I mentioned: "The Dutch have one of the world's best rail systems. It's clean, efficient, prompt, not expensive, always on time. The Dutch make it very easy to use their transportation system with a single card. It's the OV-chip card. You just tap it on the ticket reader as you're boarding and then you tap it again once you get off. And that'll work on trains and buses and trams, local or intercity. It's a phenomenal system"

Ja leuk. We hebben ook broodje Mario, die was er eerst. Een Italiaanse familie. Daarna kwam er concurrentie, natuurlijk. Mario aan de Oudegracht heeft nog steeds de meeste klanten, want ze zijn super in de bediening, met veel humor.
Oh I should talk in English, I guess. We've got Broodje Mario too, along the Oudegracht. That Italian family was the first, in Utrecht 4 decades ago. Now they've got concurrence, Broodje Ben. The Italian stall of Mario is still most popular, for the service is quick and humor is added to it as well. Try it one day.

I'm already emigrated for more then 12 years to Thailand but my city of birth always attracts me.

Lovely video! Well done but, I'm afraid to say... you skipped the most gorgeous part of the city center haha. On the other side of the main commercial street, Lange Viestraat, crossing one of the bridges where you sat, the Vliebrug, there is an extension of Oudegracht. This extension meets the moat that surrounds the center. And along both sides of Oudegracht, going towards the moat, you will find Breedstraatbuurt and Wijk C. And it feels like a village in the heart of the city, with the same feel as the rest of the center. It's a combination of more restaurants and cafés some shops, interpersed in what is mostly a residential neighborhood. Also featuring a small music venue. There is another commercial street there, leading to the moat, called Voorstraat. And where it meets the moat, there is a little park. Some of the best food is in that part of the city. And pretty much any place surrounding it is idylic. You actually were about to pass it by boat around 23:06. So anyone reading this, pleaase explore that part of the city.
Another overlooked part was the park along the moat at the Southern tip of the center. Where Oudegracht meets the Southern part of the moat (a 10 minute walk from where I live haha). Also there; a large population of feral Indian ringneck parakeets (...I'm a parrot owner. I had to include them. There are several flocks scattered accross the city).
It understandably did not include a park called Wilhelminapark. But if someone's interested in visting: follow the main commercial straat, Lange Viestraat to Nachtegaalstraat. Along the way you will find an ice cream shop called Luciano's, which is an award-winning ice cream shop. Go there. You will enter another commercial street, but more historic in its architecture. Eventually leading to a large city park called Wilhelminapark. Amazing place to sit and relax during summer.
Those are wonderful suggestions, thank you so very much. They are the kind of neighborhoods just beyond the normal tourist range, but still so special. I can see on Google Earth how correct you are. Next time I will surely explore them. Meanwhile I will put the suggestions into the book I am writing about the Netherlands, thanks.
Pitty you did not go up in the Dom Tower. I was expecting a wide-angle shot of the amazing view from the tower ending this video. Greetings from a native inhabitant of Utrecht. btw, I like your narrating making this video a great ad for Utrecht. Did you know that back in 2004 as part of the 750th anniversary of the Dom church they temporary reconstructed the Nave out of scafholding connecting both tower and church again. Really amazing.

I shot the Dutch series with my SONY FS5, a brilliant 4k pro model, super in every way. I just wish I had mastered the complicated controls (which are pretty easy once you figure it out). I had to do a lot of exposure correction in post-production, using Premiere Pro.
Darnit. Here i am, living in a different city, watching my birthplace through new eyes.
The video hits 21:37 and this guy wearing a brown jacket walks past the camera holding a sammich of utter glory.. And now i want a Broodje Mario.. Roll on to 23:53 and there they are, the old boss level dispensers of delectable foodstuffs. past midnight, miles away, and i'm waving at my screen like an idiot. "Wait! Take my money and make me one with extra peppers!"
By the way,... the University of Utrecht (1636) is *not* the oldest one in the Netherlands. At least 4 Universities preceded the Utrecht one, of which two still exist...; the University of Leiden (1575) and the University of Groningen (1614).
Am trying to find out what the big water canal ( kanaal ) in southern Utrecht is called
My OMA lived on Spaaklaan St.
during the 70s & late 80s , when I would visit her during my Summer vacations .
There was a path which one could bicycle ,you or walk .
The banks were aleays lined with house boats on both sided of the canal .The water smelled bad always .
There was also a very tall apt.building ( flat ) towards the end ( left side ) .
This water canal was very wide ( so it seemed ) and long .
Am hoping to revisit Utrecht -- my Oma's old apt./ flat on Spaaklaan in Utrecht ( South side ) hopefully within this coming up year.
However ,cannot for the life of me ,recall thename of this water area ( canal / kanaal ) that I,used to you on & along the water banks
where these house boats would beanchored on .
If anyone,could let me know the name of this ( canal / kanaal ), would greatly appreciate it .

Only some drunks that jump or fall in. Because they like to do drunk stuff :) It is like the biking thing. I live in the netherlands my whole life, 34 years. The last time I fell of my bike was when I was 10 or something. The last time I fell in the water was.... Never.

btw: that "busy street" is off-limits for regular cars. Only busses, taxis and deliveries are allowed to drive there

@@denniscallan yes, Lange Viestraat and Potterstraat too. Most of the streets in the old town centre actually. If you look at the red asphalt (another clue), you can see the "LIJN BUS" signs that mean it's only for busses and other permitholders.

Didn’t know there were tornadoes in the Netherlands.
Yes, they are quite rare in Europe but can happen, usually in conjunction with hurricanes. That storm which destroyed part of the cathedral was an extreme event...so long ago they cannot be too sure about exactly what happened, but it was enough to knock down half of a Gothic church.

Yeah, they are still there but will be rarely seen and are really small! Piece of cake compared to the Tornado Alley in US! It's like a beetle compared with a mammoth!
Tornadoes can happen anywhere, they just are not as common and not as powerfull as in US.
Couple of months back a tornado hit Amsterdam, did next to no damage.
oww we have them but they are lower then the lowest power and at the extreme end my end up destroying/damaging a house in the states and those wouldn't be even mentioned in the news. After all there is no warm ocean to feed them near only a shallow sea that is usually to cold to swim in except for summer.

That is almost impossible to suggest because there are so many choices and it depends on your preferences, so I would say, go where you want, your first impulses. My advice would be to slow down, do not try to do too much. Take your time.
Try not to speed through a checklist of countries you have been to. Too many fly into Amsterdam spend 1 day and race of to Belgium spend 1 day, race of to Paris spend one day. To me that sounds more like a waste of time.
My advise pick a country, maybe at most 2 or 3 at best and spend a little more time in them. Anywhere really, try to experience them.
