Savall's concerts in the Laeiszhalle in October 2021: »Time after time one could enjoy with surprise all kinds of details of the score that are otherwise never heard.« (Hamburger Abendblatt) What better way to celebrate Beethoven's birthday? In three concerts spread over two evenings, the Catalan conductor and his chamber orchestra Le Concert des Nations turned their attention to the famous composer's symphonies. Their performance of Beethoven's Sixth is now available as a concert stream.
Savall explained that he wanted to »restore the energy to the Beethoven symphonies, which are so well-known and are too often heard in cluttered interpretations« - a task that no-one is better suited to than this meticulous music scholar with his chamber orchestra specialising in Early Music. Incidentally, we can also congratulate Jordi Savall himself: he celebrated his 80th birthday in August 2021.

What a resplendent performance! Many period instrument versions of the Sixth push too hard, but this one respects the generally lively tempos while still letting the music breathe. So glad to see Savall come round to this work, perhaps my favorite Beethoven symphony....

Wir hatten ursprünglich Karten für dieses Konzert, was eigentlich schon im Juni 2020 auf dem Programm stand. Dann aber verschoben wurde wg. Corona. Danke für die Ausstrahlung! So konnten wir endlich hören, was wir verpasst haben. Ein wirklich wunderbares Konzert. Schade, dass die Pandemie uns den Live-Genuss genommen hat. Wir werden es sicherlich noch öfter ansehen und hören.
Enjoyable. Nicely paced, particularly impressed by the stately tempo of the Andante. Many 'period bands' rush it.

A very beautiful sound from this orchestra. In this symphony, an aural sweetness that is emotionally very moving, loving even - I was literally in tears at the start of the first movement. I must add the recording engineers have excelled themselves, a wonderfully transparent and involving sound on my Audioengine speakers. I loved the sound of the oboe, and the unvalved horns had a form of primitiveness about them which suited the theme "pastoral".
Incredibly beautiful performance, recorded and filmed in an intimate and utterly charming way. A sublime artistic experience on CZcams that I never expected. I can only add; Thank you, thank you, thank you many times over. Truly inspiring. More please. Thank you.
Oh, what a wonderful performance! Silky smooth strings go all the way up to the upper limit of 20kHz. The horns and woodwinds sound so fitting to the 6th.

Würde sehr gerne als DVD erwerben, auch die 7 Symphonie. Die Darbietungen in Hamburg sind für mich ein Hochgenuss und weit besser als die Aufnahme auf CD 6-9 die ich schon erworben habe.
Leider habe ich es zum kaufen im Internet nicht gefunden.

Is there a lack of vibrato in the strings which gives this performance such silvery singing pure sound? It seems to be so transparent and free. The voices just seem to be so clear. I haven't heard this in performance with contemporary instruments where this symphony sounds heavier. The tempi were wonderful. Bravo again to Savall and this wonderful ensemble..
Yes, and the different approach to bowing, and use of gut strings/classical setup in the violins.

Congratulations on a great interpretation! I would be curious to know from other listeners what they think of the early-music period instruments playing this symphony? It sure sounds different than an orchestra with modern woodwinds and horns.

Is this the same recording that appears in the edition Beethoven Revolution Symphonies 6 to 9 by Alia Vox? I don't think so because this one live seems to have been recorded in Hamburg and the version edited by Alia Vox recorded in Catalonia. But I'm not sure, someone can let me know.
I think it's not the same. This seems to be about half a minute shorter in span, and yes the disk version is recorded in "à la Collégiale du Château de Cardona (Catalogne)" Also the video of the ninth is a different one from the Alia Vox release...
Dear Carlos, this is a live concert, part of the European tournée we played last year. We recorded the symphonies some month before.

Sehr schön gespielt! Savall ist ein toller Musiker. Aber kein Dirigent, was man bei jedem Übergang deutlich merkt. Trotzdem, gesamt Eindruck ist - sehr gut.
