The Defender is a fantastic car, but I think the Urban package is a complete miss. It makes the Defender feel like it's pretending to be a G-Wagon, which it isn't and shouldn't be. The Defender is a car that should look slightly out of place on the road, like it belongs more in some muddy field. Perhaps I'm desperately clinging to the spirit of the old Defender, but the new Defender only exists because of the old Defender's charm.

Agree 100%. I took ownership of a new G400d four months ago. It's more practical and than the G63 and not so "in your face". I absolutely love it.
@@Vincetagram you guys can get the g550 professional edition in the US. Sure it's not diesel but it has the off-road kit and isn't as massive as the 4x4 version

Excellent video regarding video quality and commentary made about both cars! However, I recently rented a p300 base model Defender and noticed that the car was 'floaty' and not sitting on the floor when driving on highway with big turns. Would that just be an issue with the base model defender or is it the same for higher specs defender like the p400 and V8 editions as well? Thanks !

I could never buy a jaguar SVR when a Range Rover SVR exists. The Range Rover looks way better and has a 4x4 transfer case and it has more headroom and can fit 3 people across

A great review. Exactly my take on the G Wagon. I have a current Defender and love it. Reliability is the main issue however..
I have a new Defender as well. 2.5 years in … no problems. My 2012 LR4 had no problems whatsoever. What is your concern about reliability?
I see that statement made in a vacuum often on the internet, but it leaves out the fact that all of my buddies with G wagons, other high end Benzes, Bentleys, BMWs... they all have issues too.
Yes, expensive cars are generally expensive to maintain and when they do break they are also expensive to repair. But…some do break more than others😊

From the beginning you could already hear the bias. Cool review but I wonder if you could have one where you genuinely tested the vehicles on their merits and less on your bias against the one. Great video! You earned a subscriber from Ghana🇬🇭. G-wagon is everything! I think the Germans did a great job by maintaining the old military body but focusing on the inside. The new Defender however, has changed in looks and doesn’t feel like the old one at all. I can also understand why Sam prefers Rover over Benz lol.. Brits always prefers what’s theirs even if the other is better 😅. Kudos

The G Wagon has been my fav vehicle for years and years. There is just something about the style, the off-road prowess and the sound (of the AMG version) that clicks all the boxes for me
I don't care for the fact that it's hard to differentiate looks-wise between a 2005 and a 2023 G

12:40 it's the other way around here in Germany. I drive a nicely gondwana stone satin (ppf) full black packed Defender and everyone is turning their head. The Defender in general is really rare over here - you see a well specced one maybe once a month. But you see a dozen G-Wagons every day.

The g63 is really undistructable. Whistlindiesel proved it well.
I think the difference in feel/handling is the Gwagon being body on frame, which is a huge plus if you offroad it. Of course, 99.9% of SUV owners never do, so the Defender is probably a better choice for almost everyone.
The Defender is great offroad.

I kind of agree. The g wagon isn’t my style, but it’s still an amazing vehicle. I’d take the jag svr off that defender v8 over one as well. They are a bit more understated, still look aggressive enough and are $85k+ cheaper new. The g63 amg is a status suv. The jag and defender are for people who don’t care about getting the head nods. You want a comfortable ride, stunning interior and enough power to get in trouble with. And I believe you could even get the svr with a blower in older models if I’m not mistaken.

G wagon is a legacy car, people can moan as much as they want but it is good at what it was built to do, its unapologetically itself. it sells in droves and holds it value like nothing else in its sector, apart from maybe the first URUS's. Its just such a solid cool car. There isnt anything like a G wagon, theres no other car in that sector that has that level of luxury and performance and then can go off-roading with the best of the best and keep up. Carwow has done numerous G wagon off road tests and the proof is in the pudding.... its fine if people dont personally like G wagons but to act like its an "objectively" inferior car to JLR products is crazy😂

Brilliant video as always sam BUT.....There's absolutely no way you just compared the monolithic and unbreakable off-roading land yacht legend that is the G wagon.... to a car thats trim pieces fall off just from being outside for too long, let alone off-roading. Iv seen so many new defenders with hanging off panels and irresponsive front and rear lights its actually not funny. These 2 cars just arent rivals and its weird that you thought they could be.

I currently have a 2020 Lexus GX 460 Just ordered a 2024 Defender I had to order it because I had a few things added. I wish I could have picked red leather seating like I have in my GX But Land Rover does offer that color option. If anyone has had both a Lexus GX and Defender can you tell me which one you prefer. Thanks
Thank you for your insights about both vehicles. Everybody has their own take and their own preferences. I appreciate the comparison of them on-road, which is what most people will be doing the vast majority of the time. But I think you missed a very big point of the G-wagon, and that is its off-road ability and durability. That soft suspension that makes it not so great going down twisty roads, makes it excel off-road, which wasn't tested. I think if you would take them both off-road in various conditions for a few hours, you would have realized where the G-Wagon really shines. The new Defender is beautiful and I'm sure does handle better on the road, but that's the problem, for somebody like me who does take their vehicles off road and overlanding, the defender wouldn't cut it. Sadly, the basis for its coolness factor, as a great off-roader, doesn't apply so much anymore. Whereas the G wagon's still 100% does.

These aren't made to do extreme offroading. They both do the job with ease. Range rover is just better at comfort.

10:46 Are "after market" those "air vents" on the bonnet on the Defender V8?. Also very strange to see small touch-screen in the V8.
Both cars are great. I spent a long time deciding which one to buy, and still chose a G-class, despite the fact that it turned out to be 2 times more expensive
First thing I noticed is the road noise in the Defender. It is a lot louder inside than the G wagon.
Shocking and different style of editing at the start,but very fitting given the vehicles featured i think
I like both, but the Defender is much more discrete. As a discrete guy, naturally I'm very attracted to that, and that's the reason I'd always pick a Defender over any G Wagon.
How do these compare to the INEOS Grenadier?
I have a defender and I love it and I think it's way better looking the the G-wagon but there's something I love about the G-wagon

Not to be insensitive, but the Gwagon is the car for everyone just not the car for everyone's pockets is what I think he meant to say.
The G400 diesel is the coolest G Wagon. But even that one being the cheapest in the lineup is like twice the price of a Defender with an equivalent engine
This test isn't fair. You have compare standard g63 to urban something defender which I see has different suspension and maybe even distances which make ride completely different to standard defender v8. You should take brabus g63 and then compare it.
Not a fan of either but the Defender would have the edge if I was.

Sam - your videos are the best by any auto CZcamsr - it’s not because you’re most technically sound or drive the best, but because you come across as the best human, relatable, down to earth, humorous. Excellent overall rounded package. Good Luck. Oh and btw - I completely disagree with you on this one. G63 will blow the Defender or nothing else away. There’s nothing like it on the road. When all everyone cares about is being politically correct the G63 doesn’t care about popular opinions and delivers the best unapologetic driving experience imho.

Incredibly uncool video... i loved it. Especially the fact that you clearly hate everything about the G-Wagon but can't help trying to love it for the sake of mass opinion. Loving the Defender but talking about a half priced Jag F-PACE... and borrowing these expensive vehicles from the showroom and naming the place but then basically calling the vehicles rubbish. And that cheers with the coffee but not taking a sip. Brilliant stuff. I feel like i just watched an ex choirboy let loose.

I think a much better comparison is the Range Rover SV special edition to the G Wagon. The clearance on the Range Rover is 13 inches versus 9.5 in for the G Wagon. The back seat of the SV more luxurious than the G wagon in my opinion. The Defender is a lower grade from the Range Rover SV. Price of one can be as high $365, 000
Some more technical comparison would have been appreciated, with the suspension layouts for example.

I sold my 22 plate f pace svr and have been regretting it ever since. The main reason being that I can’t find anything anyway near as food for the price. I’m looking at a G63 but they are so expensive to run. Then I’m looking at cayenne but it doesn’t have the character. Then a 911 is tempting but hard to put the kids in. If you’re reading this and wondering what’s the best car to put your family in, but have old school genuine petrol head fun in too, then the F Pace SVR should be top of your list.
Wish you had added a 3rd and drive the rsq8 best all rounder for the price

I have owned a 2015 Brabus G63 and now a current model 400d, and I think that the Alexander guy sums it up when he talks about personality. Most new cars are pretty damned good these days, but very few actually talk to you. I owned a 2022 911GTS and couldn’t fault it…it was amazing….but it was, well, dull! Sometimes a car that’s flawed but has personality will outscore something that’s perfect.
Well, one thing sure about the G63 is its engine won't explode with 7k km on the clock.

I think the point was missed here. The G wagon is more of a dedicated offroader, it's not meant for backroad blasts on twisty country lanes. With it's body on frame construction, three locking diffs, it's the one that is better suited for off road trails and muddy terrain. It does lose some of that in the G63 version, but the DNA is still there. No it's not going to be doing that, but neither are you going to be diving with your Rolex Submariner either
Apart from in Dubai, hardly any owner takes their G-Wagon off-road. In terms of off-road capability, Land Rover cars are the best.

Gotta be a G-wagon Sam. LR/RR will always have problems. Electrics usually. My cousin rewired his old V8 defender with his own wiring loom, no more problems!! He stopped issues from his garage yet they couldn't in a mahoosive factory !

I drove a g wagon 4x4 conversion on my channel awhile back as well as a brabus 4x4 and a 'regular' g63 off camera. They're incredible machines for off roading but aren't all that great as a daily imo. It's literally a military truck with a modern mercedes reskin and luxury interior. You could make teh interior rolls royce level but you can't change the fact that it still is a heavy duty truck unless you completely redesign the chassis and suspension as a unibody luxury SUV, not to mention it has the aerodynamics of a cinderblock and will never be as useable or as comfortable as a GLE. Those are the same reasons why the jeep wrangler will never be as comfortable as a grand cherokee, a defender will never be as comfortable as a RR sport, and a bronco will never be as comfortable as a ford explorer.

There’s no comparison about the 2 cars. I love the defender, I m even in love with the defender however the g wagon is by far no comparison with the defender.
Great content. It’s not a fair comparison though. I can’t think of a situation where I would prefer the defender, one of the main issues is a d250 s can look exactly like a v8. The g class manages to get away with this though due to its iconic Shape. I think Range Rover could have an even bigger hit on their hands if they stick closer to the original design.
The fact that a base model D250 with cloth seats and steel wheels exists and a G-Wagon equivalent doesn’t should tell you all you need to know about these vehicles.
G-Wagons are now exclusively owned by the absolute worst people. They aren’t cool any more.
