    Not sure I came upon your channel but glad I did. Watching your vids on your bug are great and have started to light a fire to get mine back on the street. My first bug was a 74 std with a 1641cc. I bought a 62 cloth sunroof back in 2006 and took the 1641 and gave the 62 life again. Drove it daily for about 7yrs and it's been under a cover in the garage. I'll never sell it and I know it needs to be rolling down the road! I look forward to seeing more on your 74 in the future. Flat four for life

    Great video, your beetle is really nice!
    If your car has been sitting for a few months always drain the bowl on the carb before you start it and you won't have to go though that rough running period. Also, please please relocate that fuel filter!!! Get that plastic fuel filter out of the engine bay if you don't want to start a fire.
    I think that changing the brake fluid in the reservoir is fine as long as the old fluid isn't nasty and real dirty. If the old fluid was black and cloudy, then it would definitely have been time for a proper flush.
    Anyway, really nice beetle! The white walls look great! 😁😁

Much easier to adjust. Really like your videos. Beautiful bug. Especially the history on it. Noel

    I loved your hubcap tip as I learned the hard way on that exact same issue. A couple of months back I took my '75 Dodge D100 to Discount Tire for a tire change out as well. I went there with near perfect (but aged) period correct dog dish hubcaps. When I picked up my truck from Discount, I had waited for so long for the job to be complete, I did not initially pay attention to the hubcaps when I was leaving the tire shop, I just wanted to get in truck and get back home. As soon as I got back to my house, I did my normal walk around the truck admiring the new tires when I noticed 3/4 hubcaps had been very noticeably bashed in. The idiot tire technician popped the hubcaps back on by obviously pounding the center of the hubcap instead of gently on the outer edges. When it comes to classic vehicles, you really have to be picky where you take it to for maintenance.

    @daalhoffarm Před 2 lety +1

    Your so called carb problem was just a misfiring sparkplug. It was running on 3 cilinders.
    Next time do a ignition service also. And if you drive the car every year and refuel a couple of times.
    Running a fuel filter and replacing it every two years, you never need to clean that style of carburator.
    Tip Check your fuel lines underneed the gastank, and behind the engine. And relocate that fuel filter.
    Nice bug btw, the tyres are stunning on it!

I am currently putting my super back together, is there a way to circumvent this from happening? My super is nearly rust free, but she will be my “mostly” daily driver. I thought you might could block it off and put the vent covers in for looks. Not really sure if they are super functional. Any suggestions would be great!!! Love your videos. Keep buggin’

    • @JasonExplainsThings

    A bus or beetle have ALWAYS been my dream vehicle. I’m in the process of actually saving up my pennies to get mine. I plan on making whichever I decide to buy my daily. So classic and important are these vehicles in the history of automobiles. I’m a old soul “hippie” at heart so these cars explain my life and how I live everyday, in no hurry ever one day at a time and always trying to spread peace and happiness to all. Some people dream bout having a turbo or racer engine whatever that like to go fast, I just dream bout having my bus or beetle to live in a time of no computer chips enjoy life and experience stories of break downs on trips that people stop and help if needed. The world needs to go back to this era and stop being in such a rush to live your life in “the fast lane”. Slow down take a breathe of fresh air and enjoy the beautiful sights that were put here for us all to see. Your beetle is absolutely gorgeous. Peace and love!!

  • @michaeld.3779
    @michaeld.3779 Před 2 lety

    Hello, Jason. Your ‘74 is beautiful, and you come across as a nice guy. But I’m going to be honest with you on a few of your “extraction” methods, and how you’re harming your air-cooled.
    First, off, though, I had no idea that Castrol had come out with a high-zinc oil. I’ve been using Valvoline VR Racing oil with high-zinc, but I’d rather go back to Castrol, now that they offer a high-zinc product. Thanks for the tip.
    High-zinc oils will destroy the effectiveness of a catalytic converter. That’s why you don’t want to put it in your cars that have a cat, assuming you live in a state that requires an annual smog check. High-zinc oils are great, however, for vintage engines with flat tappets-like in a Beetle.
    Siphoning out your brake reservoir only changed the brake fluid in your reservoir. The reservoir is merely a … well … a reservoir, there to allow for extra fluid as your brakes wear. It doesn’t recirculate throughout your brake system. This means that all the old brake fluid in your metal lines, beyond your reservoir, was not changed when you sucked out the reservoir. That is, the business stuff that boils while braking a lot, or holds damaging moisture-which promotes rust in your metal lines is still there. Changing the brake fluid, means getting rid of the stuff in your lines. Not your reservoir.
    Dirt and contaminates in your engine oil tend to settle in the sump. It’s a gravity thing, I guess. That’s why VW located the drain system at the bottom of the sump. Yes, you got most of your oil out by sucking it from the top, but you didn’t get all the contaminates that settle at the bottom of the sump. Also, if you don’t remove the sump plate and screen to inspect for tell-tale particles, you’ll never see them, and not be able to fix the issue before further damaging other interior engine components. The oil should also be warmed up just before changing it. Warm, newly-recirculated oil holds in suspension, more contaminates, and getting rid of the contaminates is the reason you’re change the oil, anyway.
    I’m getting older now, and changing my oil, adjusting valves, and all the other maintenance items aren’t really a fun way to spend my afternoons anymore (I’m also a late riser, by the way); and I mention this because I’m also lazy. But … I don’t cut corners. I just go ahead and do the maintenance the way it’s supposed to be done, for good reasons. If you want to keep your beauty as long as you mentioned, don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Just do as the old VW guys have been doing for decades.
    I bought my first VW new in 1969, and have owned many bugs, buses, Karmann Ghias, a Single Cab, and a Type lV. I know a thing or two-and have forgotten much about ACVW’s-so I hope you won’t take offense, but will take my advice.
    P.s. those tires rock!

    • @JasonExplainsThings
      @JasonExplainsThings  Před 2 lety

      Hey Michael. A few things… there is no cat on my bug so that’s not an issue.
      I agree about the brake fluid. It was drained about 5 years ago when I added disc brakes. The fluid is very clean with not many miles so I think it’s a nice half measure to swap it out (you’re welcomed to disagree).
      And lastly I did a full oil drain and cleaned the strainer 150 miles ago (like I said in the video), which is the only reason I used an oil extractor. Thanks for watching. :-)

    This one made me laugh, 6 months lol, you know before they were classics they were current cars, state of the art so to speak, I've had many classics and restored lots too, cars I've had stood 3 to 4 years, they don't self destruct, and you have it in a luxury storage area, most stick them outside in all weather's, the only thing you should do is put the car in the air off the tyres and use foam stand off strips for the cover so the air moves around the car, as for starting always turn the car over by hand a few times to gently lube the journals etc, that's it, rubbers etc wil deteriorate regardless of driving or not, it's an age thing and after parts are generally junk compared to the original, nice colours by the way
