  • Fluval SHAKER Aquarium 252 / 168 - Turning It into a MARINE REEF tank
In this video I modify my Fluval Shaker 252 aquarium to be ready to run as a saltwater reef tank. I have done this by chaning the LED to a Fluval Marine Bluetooth light unit. I have also swapped my pipework over into a sump, using the fittings from an FX4/6 gravel vac.

Im currently cycling the same tank.
Ive kept the 307 running underneath.
Ive made a small sump (strengthened & modified the cabinet) to go underneath.
Heres the thing- i could theoretically use my small fluval surface skimmer on opposite side to feed down to the sump.it flows well enough upon testing.weird i know but it seems to work.
The other option is-move cannister to other side/lilly pipes setup & use your method for sump.
    Not sure which!😂😂

If you pull the intake strainer off of the adapter it will fit onto the large pipe.

Why not just change the 2 bulkheads ??

I'm using what I have already. But I guess you're right, you could change the bulkheads if you wanted. I think if you weren't using the canister for the return that would make more sense but using the canister it would be a pain to connect from 32mm or even 40mm pvc down to the 16/22mm pipes the Fluval uvc and canister uses so it's easier to use the fittings the tank comes with imo

I wish fluval would make a kit for this. I am in the middle of converting my roma 240 to saltwater and wanted a sump but couldn't work out a way round this pipework issue. You've done well with this solution. I've ended up with a HOB overflow for the sump and run a canister filter aswell. I was worried about the outlet allowing water back through the canister filter when its turned off.

Thanks yeah I don't think it would be hard if the Fluval pipes were a standard size like 32mm. Fluval could make a small adapter set just to extend everything a bit to the surface and maybe a bubble trap before the filter

@@EverydayAquarist suppose fluval sell canister filters and they don't sell sumps so they would have no interest in it. Seen lots of attempts on forums so I would think a conversion kit would be quite popular.

Hi mate, Could you not just have used flexible fluval hosing for a single or dual drain with fluval ball valves to controll flow down to the sump and run the return over the top? I'm about to convert a Fluval Roma 240 and this was my plan, am I missing something obvious?

@@ChrisHibs1875if you mean using the existing pipework, I was just worried about when the power was off to the return the level of the tank stops at. Even using another long peice of pipework you are relying on an o-ring between the two pipes to ensure a good seal, rather than a proper glued joint. If that gave up or perished pretty much all the tank would empty to the sump. Probably be ok if you replaced the pipework completely but If you were going to that you just install a weir box. Could be done but I was surprised that fluval didn't make a plug and play kit for it.

Will you show how you have got your wires & airline coming out of your tank in the next video? I have got them going over the top surround which will not come off now without unplugging things.

      @EverydayAquarist  Před 2 lety +1

Yeah I think it's a bad design tbh. Originally I had the surround upside down because then at least the wires could go underneath the back bar but doing that meant the water line and light was then visible from the front. I'll play around and see if i can come up with something

Haha, don't think you've ruined it bud, looks good to me.
Just a wee idea before you fill it, why don't you paint the stand with the sump on so it blends in a wee bit rather than have the wood showing through the side of your beautiful Shaker marine tank?

I messaged Fluval and they say the Fluval surface skimmer fits on the inlet. Not sure if that helps in anyway
