  • One of the most highly anticipated players ever to come out of Canadian Junior Hockey - Possessing ridiculous speed and stick-handling skills, he tore apart QMJHL in his draft year, accumulating a staggering 137 points in only 53 games. His on-ice production and domination, along with his good looks, personality & marketability vaulted him to the top of the list of prospects for the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He was selected 1st over-all by the Ottawa Senators, but struggled to reach the lofty expectations placed on him by NHL scouts and fans alike. At the young age of 25, he retired & walked away from the NHL entirely... He moved to the West Coast and played "recreational pick-up hockey" instead. Crazy right?? 2 years later, with his love of the sport re-kindled, he secured a try-out with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He returned to the NHL and played for 3 more seasons. During this return, despite still not living up to the earlier high expectations set by others, he did manage to quietly earn respect from his coaches and teammates alike.
Now 48 years old, Alex has opened up, sharing a transparent, candid and very insightful conversation on what it was like to have had those high expectations (on an NHL team that had only won 10 games the entire previous season) thrust upon him as a teenager. And very importantly - how he now feels about the 10 year NHL career he managed to put together! A fascinating interview - ENJOY!

I got to see Daigle in MN many times. I can't say I was ever a big fan of his game but I appreciate this interview and I respect where he's coming from. Best wishes Alexandre.

      Great interview.
Very happy to hear Mr. Daigle’s story.
The general fan thinks the NHL is all fame and riches, few realize that these are young men that are just trying to find their way.

As a Senator he put up 172 points in 301 games by the time he was 23 years old. Not bad for a bust

WIthout bothering to look anything up, I seem to recall that Daigle averaged just over a half point per game for his NHL career, plus he was a star in the Swiss League. I remember him on a star studded 1995 Canadian World Jr Dream team, in Red Deer, during the NHL lockout... and although he wasn't one of the go-to guys, a la Lindros and Daze, I always felt good about TC's prospects every shift he had...
My point is that Daigle was a very talented kid who was far from a bust... Who got too much too soon, to the tune of that 12 million dollar contract, and seemed to lose (early on) much of his motivation and desire to be all he could be... Didn't the same thing happen to Johnny Gaudreau after Columbus gave him a big contract? And 'Johnny Hockey' wasn't burdened as an NHL rookie, with unrealistic expectations (never mind the language barrier with a hockey Crazed Canadian media, in a primarily English speaking city) ... Plus on a team of nobodies, going up against a veteran team's top checkers, game in and game out...

A complete flop for the Ottawa Senators. Overpaid.
