  • To most of us, picking out a lampshade probably seems like a cutand-dry task. All we need to do is find one that fits on the lamp and isn't a complete eyesore, right? But for the serious
homeowner, many different variables need to be considered in order to find the perfect match between shade and lamp. How big should the shade be? What color works best? Should the shade complement or contrast with the base? In this program, we're going to address these questions and many others in an effort to find the perfect shade.
First off, let's cover the issue of taste. As a rule, the lamp shade should match with the base. Putting a square shade on a round base...creates a tension that can easily be avoided by matching up the base and shade by shape.
You also want to take into account the style of the base when you're picking out shades. Think of the shade as a way to enhance the aesthetic qualities of the base.
Once we've narrowed down the list of appropriate shades...It's time to get down to the nitty gritty. First, we need to measure the height of the lamp from the base to the bottom of the socket. The shade's bottom diameter should be within two inches of this measurement. Next, let's measure the top diameter of the shade and compare it with the bottom diameter. Ideally, the top should be about half as wide as the bottom. While we're examining the shade, let's also make sure there's enough room between the shade and the light bulb for dispersion of heat. This simple precaution will prevent discoloration or, worse, fire.
Next up, we need to choose the right harp or spider which is the device that connects the shade to the base. Another common fitter, the clip-on, clips directly onto the light bulb.
So we've got the shape. We've got the size. We've even got the fitter. What's left? How about the fabric? Or the color? Choosing the right material can make all the difference when it comes to lampshades. Classic materials include silk and linen, but many synthetic
materials are also available and may prove more resilient in the long run. Make sure you test out a colored shade before taking it home. What looks like the perfect color on the shade may actually turn out to be a bit lackluster once the light's turned on.
Any room can be spiced up with a good lampshade. Not only do they spread the light around, they help create a mood. From bright and cheerful to sultry and romantic, there's no telling what you can do for a room just by finding the perfect shade for you.

I think this is backwards- she says top of shade should be 2 times the lamp base, and the shade bottom within 2" of the lamp base. Is this backwards?

I think she means 2” must be larger than the height of your lamp from base to bottom of the socket for the bottom measurement of the shade

Yes, what is a good guideline for matching height of lamp to height of lampshade?
