      it is remarkable how the company that laid the very templet for smart vacuums is just gliding along. Neato lack the cult to always buy their products no matter how stagnant like Roomba did during their doldrums; and Roomba has improved their line-up like mad over the last 2 years.

Luckily we found our first recon squad who had already succum to the robots and their ammo. Us Vacuum War Veterans never get the acknowledgment we deserve, after going through such a horrific war.

    I have been a Neato fan for close to 10 years. I’ve had 4 of them over these years. Yesterday I moved on and bought a Deebot. I just really got tired of feeling like my old XV were better than the new D4, plus getting stuck everywhere, plus having to run over and over again until it mapped our house. Still a Neato fan, but until they come out with something that can really be matched to some other competitors, I won’t be buying another one so soon.

  • @meltoff9339

    I purchased a D7 based on your reviews a couple of years ago. It worked fine for a while then began to have connectivity issues, Neato support was very helpful, including and RMA and lots of emails, the issues was in fact with the ISP blocking ports Neato used to connect to the internet. I really like the D shape of the Neato robots, I feel it really does a much better job at cleaning (totally subjective, haven't done tests), but I was really hoping to see an auto empty bin from Neato, this D8 doesn't seem to do anything better than the D7, and why they released a whole new app and have abandoned the old app is beyond me.
    Thank you for all of your hard working with these reviews, they really are informative!

    Absolutely Nailed it with this review. Babysitting a MUST with the first mapping. (I have the D7). Mirrors to the floor are this vacuums kryptonite. However, We fill the bin almost every run and its a smaller house and even after cleaning lady vacuumed. This vacuum works amazing. I couldn’t imagine a smaller bin size. I would like them to add “Map updating” to my D7 TOO.

      I Had the Neato D5 for 4 years and I decided to upgrade to Roborock s7 maxV Ultra.
      Yes, the Neato falls behind in terms of navigation and getting stuck, but in my eyes it's still number 1 in terms of vacuuming ability. I have 4 cats, and there's just no comparison: Neato ends every run with an almost full dust bin, while the Roborock barely picks up half of that. Even after a Roborock vac+mop run, I can still feel some dust on floor if I'm barefoot, which was never my experience with Neato.

  • @ComputerStuff
    @ComputerStuff Před 3 lety +4

    Neato by far cleans better than most of the robot vacuums - I find its practically superior to Deebot, for example, in cleaning floors. That said the cons you mentioned here with it getting stuck and being "dumb" in freeing itself is a problem ongoing since the release of the Connected series units. Neato boasts its D-shape, but it causes it to get stuck more, cause more damage to trim, furniture, and walls, and they clearly haven't fixed the algorithm that helps the robot get around advanced corners and furniture. All signs point to Neato not fixing this issue (for some reason) so I wouldn't be able to recommend this vacuum myself at this point. And while LIDAR is superior in general navigation, a camera allows for object recognition and avoidance. A combo of the two is really the best move moving forward for robot manufacturers. This D8 is effectively a visual re-design of the D7 but doesn't seem to offer much superiority. It's a shame.
    Anyway, great video as always - and thank you.

    As an owner of a D7, when I first saw this I was wondering what was new beside the design. Looking at your review the issues that I have with my D7 are also in the D8, so doesn't seem like much have changed really. My D7 Also gets stuck and sometimes loses its idea of where it is in the map, and the continues to bump into a door because it thinkts its the right way. And it will continue to do so again and again and again ... All in all I think there is much better options out there.

    I just did a tear-down of the D8. Complete overhaul of the electronics with several key things resolved such as the side brush motor is now gear drive (no more o-ring belt). From a hardware perspective, they have been working hard it seems. Will see how the firmware and software evolves since it is a new platform.

    I am currently in the market for a robot vacuum and I really appreciate your videos and reviews. That being said one brand of vacuum I have not noticed you ever mention or review, I may have just missed it, is Miele. Now, while putting aside the onset performance, the reason I bring it up is that when discussing with more than one vacuum dealer and repair they often bring up that there is only one brand that they have not heard any complaints over and never have to fix, and that is Miele, their performance being top notch, they last for very, very long time with out any problems, and they have great customer support should something get broken (not fail or break down). I know in my experience that my family has had one of their canister vacuums for I believe over 20 years now and it operates basically the same as when my parents got it. Now I know that there is no really good way to test longevity and performance over time so that can't really be part of a review, but as I said before I am currently in the market for a robot vacuum and I know that they have one now and given my confidence in their brand I would really like to know how it compares with other current available models.

    Had a D7 and fortunately, a friend who worked at Neato got if for me at a vastly reduced price. It vacuumed OK, but a lot of "schmutz" from wool carpet stuck in the brush. The Roborock seems a lot smarter and gives less trouble. Mr. Neato was re-homed. It would be interesting to see how well robots clean around things. I recently moved and when I picked up my desk, there was a huge amount of dog hair the robot did not get that was unseen when the desk was in place.

    I just returned the D8 after 2 weeks of babysitting. It cleans really well, it just gets lost and bangs it’s head too many times. I experienced the same as this video, if you lifted it to move it after it got stuck, expect it to get lost. It’s software just isn’t ready. IMO it’s the best high pile carpet cleaner though. I ran the old D85 and it can navigate better.

  • @RobertCone
    @RobertCone Před 3 lety +2

    Great review. Looks like the D8 has the same problems as my D3's, so I wouldn't expect a software fix to improve its navigation issues since they've been there for years, models, and generations. The one thing that made the D3 much better was buying a larger battery for it. It's well worth it, and something that VacuumWars should include in its reviews is the frequency and price of battery replacement. The original D3 battery lasted between 12-18 months before it started giving me issues I realized was related to the battery. Also, Recharge and Resume functionality isn't the same as capacity when you need the vacuum to be finished in time to for you to log in remotely from work and can't have it restarting its cleaning in the middle of a Zoom meeting.

    The D8 does get stupidly stuck in the weirdest of places and one would think as a smarter robot it would have a command or programming to recognize those trouble areas and avoid getting stuck. But once I identified those trouble areas I was able to add No-Go zones to keep it out of those areas. But often even though the base is within 10 feet of my Wifi router, it would often loose it's position and ask I to pick it up and bring it to the station, or it would spin around while exclaiming, "I need to find my bearings", but usually after that it's 50/50 if it can go back to the base.
    The times it can, great, but the times it doesn't, then its the go pickup and baby remedy. But once back at base it seems to reset its lostness and can start fresh like it never got lost. The odd times it would simply skip areas I zoned as clean zones and would have to manually select those areas and send it out again.
    What I find amusing is the sample pic of the APP screen all videos tend to show is a right side up or aligned with X and Y mapping. But ever since I got mine, the map aligns with true north. But the street i live off, is on a slight angle from true north, so even the map it creates is on an angle, but the no-go zones follow an X and Y axis... I wish I could get their previous line drawn no-go zones instead of standard sizing boxes which are locked to the X/Y axis even though the map is not.
    The solution according to Neato if it misses areas on the map is to clean the sensors from the underside of the robot. That fixes that problem until they get dirty again, which is weekly or basically after each cleaning.

    I have the slightly older D5 and the Floorplan setup and Floorplan related stuff is horrible. I have my unit in my dining room. If a dining room chair is moved 6in from its normal position it doesn't recognize the Floorplan. Also like you said times when I changed furniture I had to redo the entire initial Floorplan process over and it sometimes takes many tries and a lot of babysitting.
    I wish neato would at least offer a "Floorplan run" that doesn't clean just goes around to map like another robot you reviewed kinda recently does.
    It's my only gripe of the D5. Based on the fact it's been 3 or 4 years and no improvements to the d5 I personally don't have faith in them to fix the d8 either sadly

    I used to be a big fan of Neato, I’ve owned 3 and currently
    Own 2 the D5 and D7. At first they were at the leading edge of features, mainly the no-go zones. Ever since then they have fallen behind big time, and with the new line of robots they haven’t really brought anything notable to the table. On top of that I have had 0 software updates for each robot in the last 3 ish years, along with a repeatable issue where I can’t edit no-go lines on a map on iPhones. I have reached out to support so many times with this issue and each and every time it’s the same, factory reset your robot create a new map and the problem returns. No help after that unfortunately. The robots are however are very reliable. I will definitely not be shopping with Neato again and most likely will go with Roborock.

    I wouldn't be surprised if the AI hasn't been improved since the XV-11. I've got a D5 and it makes all the same dumb errors shown in this video plus others, like simply thinking it must travel through a wall to get to another room rather than go out the way it came in. My XV-11 (10 years old) was at least as intelligent as my D5.
    The only time I would recommend Neato is when they go on super sale for sub $200, and even then you'll want to get the base model and upgrade the battery and get a spiral beater brush (no bristles to tangle up hair).

  • @alyssa5848
    @alyssa5848 Před 3 lety +1

    I still can’t believe Neato didn’t release a model with a self emptying base. I love my D7 but it does have those navigation issues where it gets stuck or it will randomly decide to ram into the dryer or the couch over and over for no reason then finally decide to move on. I recommended the D7 to my aunt before mine started having issues and have had to fix hers for her 2 or 3 times now because it was non functional. It makes me look bad that I recommended it to her whenever it decides to stop working. We both love them when they do what they’re supposed to do. I’m just disappointed that they haven’t fixed any issues with the new versions. I’ll probably end up getting a different brand whenever it needs replacing

  • @johnjingleheimersmith9259

    I own a D7. What happened was the original owners sold the company off and the new owners never fixed anything after an update broke the software. Then they proceeded to take an eternity to release this new line which is garbage. So many customers complaining about problems, and they really didn't care. I'm pretty sure they honestly don't care about these products at all and the company is effectively dead.

    Very interesting machine. I bought my d7 after watching your great review of it a few years ago. I liked it but we always forgot to empty it so it would leave streaks of dirt on the floor. The brushroll also tangles really bad for me. So we replaced it with the shark IQ robot a little over a year ago and we have liked it. It’s not a perfect robot. It does have some issues. But we have liked it for it’s value and auto empty features. We do want to upgrade in the future. But I haven’t seen something super worth it yet.

    Hi, nice video. Can you please test the Xiaomi Roidmi Eve Plus. It is CRAZY cheap in my country is just 370$ now with the auto empty dock. I have it and what i saw so far is that is a very good mopping robot (it has the Y pattern) and also very good vacuum robot. I have the Roborock S5 as a back up and I upgraded from it due to the auto-dock. In vacuuming in my opinion it is at least as good if not better than the S5. The neatos in my opinion aren't worthing their price,....

    I've been a pretty big neato fan for a while but I think they dropped the ball on these D8/9/10 models. They are expensive, have no new innovative features like they used to have, the design/motor/lidar is basically unchanged.. no improvements to noise, only slight to suction, etc - no vision, no mopping, no brush improvements.. there is like nothing here for this pricepoint. They sell it by saying "it pairs faster with bluetooth" but I should have to do that one time.. it's not really improving anything. And if the 9/10 only differences are the filtration then the value is even worse.
    The "stuck" segment of the video pains me because Neato's didn't use to do this. I have both a D5/D4 for a few years now and neither one had a problem getting unstuck until 6 or so months ago, pretty sure it was after a firmware update. Now I regularly see both of them get stuck in my kitchen chairs and dumbly do the same thing for several minutes until they give up and report it.
    I do feel like the D shape is probably an advantage - I would think in the embedded test if you embedded sand in the corners and compared it to circular bots the neato would come out ahead. But the rest of the bot is just lacking at this point.
    Also it's pretty annoying that Neato created an entirely new app for the D8/9/10 and basically abandoned the earlier models.
    Looking forward to the Roborock S7 review because I think that's going to be my next vacuum.

    I bought this Vacuum and was severely disappointed. I own the Neato BotVac Connected and I figured that the newest model would have superior navigation and just be better altogether. NOPE! The D8 is WAY louder than my BotVac Connected at high power and like you said the battery is smaller cannot finish a job at High Power like my old vacuum does. After a few runs it created a map of the floorplan but it wasn't "square" like they show you and I couldn't create labels for separate rooms. I did make some no-go lines and it seemed to work, initially. However after 5 or so runs it began complaining of not knowing where it was to the point it couldn't finish a room. It would make a 1/2 a lap around the edge of the room and the just shut off. I talked to Tech support and I ended up returning it as defective back to the store. Bottom line for me is even if it didn't fail, I'm just really disappointed that they just don't seem to be innovating and they made a lack luster product. I saw your review of the EcoVacs Deebot N8 Pro + and opted to buy that one instead for about the same amount of Money.

A friend of mine has an older robot vacuum and that thing just pushes the cat litter into the tile gaps and can't pick it up. I have tiles and cats, too, and I am considering buying a robot vacuum. But if it's a common thing of them all, that they only push the cat litter into the tile gaps - then I don't need to buy one. I would love such a video

    More than year since review and Neato still didn't improve navigation, not added multi flour support. Spot clean not introduced so far, so you can clean entire room, but not smaller area. You still can only use it in Eco mode if you start botvac from button on device. It left corners uncleaned and stuck where older Neato model where able to pass. You can use it with Siri anymore.... I can keep going it seems forever... and I really regret I changed to D10. Neato looks like in a big trouble and support only response is "we are working on this bug/feature, but we can't give you a date when we fix it"

    I've been running a D7 for a few years now. Seeing same issues as this video.. getting wedged under chairs and tables with a foot rest..
    Agree the software is a bit dumb when it gets stuck.
    Bin fills up way too quickly on carpet..
    The most annoying part is that the mapping system rarely ever works..
    I have tried many many times relearning the room, making sure furniture is in the same place, trying new positions for the base, cleaning all sensors including the LIDAR.. but it still cannot seem to lock onto the room.
    Room is a 3m ceiling and approx 45m2.
    When the D7 comes out, it seems to just scan the room and throw an error.. I have since given up on the automatic feature, which is a shame.
    I simply start the vacuum manually with one press and it then spins round the room no problem (other than the other under chair wedge).
    What would massively improve this room lock issue is some better error messages or showing me what part of the room it cannot recognise..

    I bought a D7 years ago and was happy with that then but this D8 can't compete now. I upgraded this year to an irobot S9+ and i7+ for their auto empty bin systems. If Neato doesn't add an auto empty bin system, I think they'll disappear from the market. I'm kind of glad now I didn't continue to wait for Neato's new bots as this D8 is already disappointing.

    You point out software updates will fix these problem. But the D7 have actually the same problems. Should also be pointed out that the old series is left hanging with no new software or updates. Also they have a problem if the battery lacks 100% power and if you want to draw a map but need charge in the middle of the run, it will never draw the maps if it can't charger to 100%.
    D7 got it last update December 18th, 2019. Since then they have left people hanging and focus on the "new" app. Maybe that should be a topic in these wars? Since software update is somehow a good way to keep old machine alive and improve them.
