    Being a new owner in 10 days and wow, what can I say this thing is near perfect in what I need. The mapping took 2 trys and keep improving with each run, the banging I to stuff is stopping. Which shocks me in that this robot is actually learning!!
    The smaller battery is not an issue for my needs as it cleans the hallway and 2 large bedrooms with plenty of battery left..
    As far as noise I am shocked on how really quite it is, I was beginning to think something was wrong as it was just not making enough noise, until I stopped it to check the bin, yea it's working as plenty of stuff. Once again amazed as I vacuum upstairs every week at least once.
    I love the fact it gets under furniture and places I normally can't get too, under beds, dressers, night stands!
    So far so good with this near perfect vacuum...

    I bought this vacuum after seeing this review and everything that was tested here is absolutely on-point: Cleaning performance is excellent, slick app, and the robot is ingeniously easy to clean. However, mapping our 1000 sqft obstacle free hardwood floor unit took almost 2 days of mapping, charging, mapping, charging... After a week the robot self-updated its software, and after that my old map stopped working. I had to do it all over again! A couple weeks later, another software update nuked the map again. Just my experience, hope it helps someone.

      I'm now using a Roborock S7+, and in terms of mapping and reliability it's so much better. It mapped and cleaned our 1000 sqft in under an hour with 50% battery left on balanced mode. It doesn't crash into everything, and the keepout zones are way more accurate. And it just works every time.
      It's worth mentioning that the carpet cleaning performance of the Roborock S7 is definitely worse (but still respectable) than the Roomba j7 and the brush roller is slightly more tedious to clean. Overall, especially on hardwood floor, the Roborock is the better option by far.

    The software and control algorithms are quite polished and easy to use.
    It does tend to get clogged with pet hair. Separately, it does not do well AT ALL if it gets wet even a little bit. It was bumping into water bowls and spilling those, which when mixed with remnants of cat litter created a soupy mess that sticks to all the inside components and clogs the filter. Even without the litter it causes hair and fiber to clog it much faster, and to get quite a bit wound about the rollers.
    Using the exclusion zones to avoid water bowls worked, though the exact scaling of the zones in the application is hard to tell. It helps to make them slightly larger than you would think it needed to be just looking at the map.
    One of the other weaknesses is that it tends to drop dirt where it has to climb over a threshold and it can't pick it back up.
    I'm impressed with the obstacle avoidance for the most part. Cords it does well, cat toys not so much, ones with feathers tended to get pulled in by the brush and stuck. Though I can say for certain it will also avoid cat vomit, bleh.

    @ColinZwirner Před 2 lety +35

    Frost off, thanks for doing all of this. Your channel is a huge help as I have to keep my house spotless because of my home business. But I wanted to give some feedback. I don’t find your pet hair tests to apply to real world cleaning scenarios. I don’t think it’s a good idea to draw a conclusion on pet hair performance based on a lab-style test with a small amount of human hair over a 16 square foot area. That’s easy mode for robot vacuums. We have dogs and they have destroyed 2 i7+ robots within weeks because the hair wraps around the ends of the rollers and ends up migrating into the motors. The hair also clogs the front wheel causing all sorts of navigation issues. The drive wheels are also exposed to hair and dirt, and I have had the wheel motors fail after 2 weeks of owning these things because dirt/hair migrates into the motors. We just got the S9+ and it’s dramatically better in quite literally every way, even without a camera. The wider brush roll design protects drive wheels and pivot wheel from debris resulting in far less maintenance. The brush roll is wider so a larger proportion of hair goes into the bin rather than wrapping around the ends of the brush rolls. The s9 also has usable suction as well where the i7 relies mostly on mechanical pickup which makes a huge difference in cleaning ability. The S9 beats the i7 in every way and it isn’t even remotely close when considering pet hair pickup.
    I really recommend testing these robots on something like husky or German shepherd fur to get a better idea of how they perform with a normal daily pet hair load. Your pet hair test consists of maybe 5% of my German shepherds daily shed volume. I will gladly send you a day or two worth of GSD hair if you really want to put these vacuums to the test.
    Nuances like these are really important to consider. I had to go through 4 robots to finally settle on the S9+ as the winner. Two i7+‘s, one Roborock S7, and a Neato D7.
    Just some thoughts. Your channel is awesome!!

    • @Mega4ort
      @Mega4ort Před 2 lety +4

      That is a really good point. I’ve always assumed that the main appeal of D shaped vacuums was for better edge cleaning and a wider cleaning path.
      Utilizing a wider cleaning path as a way to protect wheels from debris is a great idea. How has the S9 handled hair wrap at the end of the brush rollers?

    • @mikedeckard4776
      @mikedeckard4776 Před 2 lety +1

      I have a Samoyed, I get the same issues with my S9+. Much of her tail fur that sheds is between 3 to 6 inches long, and the undercoat can clog about any vacuum. Without out the auto empty bin , it stops cleaning after only half of my downstairs.
      I also get a lot of hair wrap around the ends of the brush rollers that I have to clean every few days due to the hair. If it’s not cleaned it will eat the brushes after a few days. I’m lucky if the rollers last 3 weeks before they are torn apart from hair wrap.

    • @catherinefitch8853
      @catherinefitch8853 Před 2 lety +1

      I completely agree that my dog's hair is mostly collected by the roller wrap, not by the bin. I have bought an I8+ which at least gets SOME hair in the bin but the front wheel collects more dog hair than my 960 which I use upstairs. The I8+ does vacuum my open floor plan main floor now that I have added some keep out zones. It finishes successfully maybe 50% of the days as long as I don't have it do the dining room. My old 960 had no chance of completing our floor plan.
      Does the j7+ do any better at not getting stuck with the "bumper stuck" message than the i8+. Since I bought it within the last month at Costco, I can return it if the j7+ is really better.
      The wider ds9 brushes sounded like a big improvement on dog hair from Colin but Mike disagrees. Please take up the offer to use GSD hair!

    • @ColinZwirner
      @ColinZwirner Před 2 lety +2

      @@Mega4ort I get much less hair wrap on the s9 compared to the i7. I think that is because of the wider cleaning path (less passes = less hair exposed to edges of brush tool), zero hair buildup in the wheels, and have seen no navigation issues either. This thing sucks up CLUMPS of GSD hair that the i7/8 would have choked on.
      I confirmed with IRobot that the J7 is just an I7 with obstacle avoidance so I quickly ruled this model out when shopping.
      So far I’m 2 weeks into ownership with this thing and I think this is the robot vac that I will keep. I still have to pull the brush rolls off and clean then every few days, but it primarily tangles around the non-motor end. The s9 seems to really resist tangles/wrap around the ends of the brushes that meet the motor bearings/seals. So no hair migrating into the motor over here, thank god.

    • @ColinZwirner
      @ColinZwirner Před 2 lety

      @@mikedeckard4776 My long haired German shedder recommends the auto empty bin. We live in a 1200ft2 house and the s9 has to auto empty 3 times on a heavy cleaning cycle.
      It’s important to not have crazy expectations either. The brush rolls will always be a maintenance item. At this point I accept that I’ll have to replace them every 2 months or so. But the hours/stress it saves me more than makes up for the $200/year on maintenance items. I have to keep my house spotless because of my job.

      Nahh, the best robotic vacuum released this year is Ecovacs X1 omni (structure cam+2D Machine vision AIVI+ self-clean mop with mop drying).
      I have been using T8 AIVI but AIVI lacks depths information and perform badly in low light or high dynamic lighting situation; and I watch a professional robotic review in which the reviewer performed the custom test with the help from TÜV confirms all 3D structure light is great at avoiding small items but lacks the ability to recognize object. (Ecovacs/Roborocks claims they are able to recognize object but I don't think they are done properly with NN but with SVM hacks: you can't distinguish a dog poo from a lego piece with the information from point clouds)
      And X1 Omni even has mop cleaning and drying function.
      The only drawback is that it sells for 1200 USD right now in China and it is going to be a lot more expensive in the US and EU.

    - Pet hair HEAVILY clogs this thing, auto empty base struggles to empty it's bin, it's also as loud as a jet engine. (bin size is about half of a roomba 980 which is pretty bad)
    - Likes to smash into objects (be it chairs, even walls) and it's 50/50 if it's going to avoid them or not.
    - Had trouble finding the base numerous times and ran out of battery rather quickly.
    - Loved to spend most of its time under my sofa for some reason.

    Love my j7+. It picks up my cat’s fur incredibly well. I think the suction test is a bit of a red herring. It is objective, but it’s not useful. The most meaningful test is the test of how much of a known amount it picks up from in a carpet. That tests the ability of the brushes to pick up items in the carpet/floor and get them into the suction stream. High suction matters most when the brushes aren’t very effective. So suction is a measure of how good or bad the brushes are, not how effective the vacuum is. I agree that the j7’s strength is carpet, which is almost my entire home. As a result, it’s a great solution for me.

    I bought one of these and it’s been running for about two months, covering about 500 sq feet of carpet. It’s been great! I haven’t had to clean anything yet - the bag hasn’t filled even once. It’s very quiet and effective on carpet. We have a Roborock S6 Pure downstairs, which is mostly hardwood. The Roborock is much louder, and it won’t avoid cables, and it has no clean base, so it needs emptying almost daily, although it’s great at mapping. The wet mopping feature of the Roborock is useless; I could not get it to work. If I had to choose, it would be the Roomba.

One question I have for you is have you run this particular vacuum over your bump test? I recall seeing you run the i7 and s9 over ½" and ¾ bumps but haven't seen you do many other "terrain" tests. I have a beveled ¾" lip between my hardwood living and hardwood kitchen and the only vacuum I know for sure could get over it is a Shark that my neighbour brought over to show me and the s9 you demonstrated. And to be fair the Shark spun its wheels when they contacted the lip and had to reverse and try again on an angle (with sucess). I'd be grateful for any light you can shed on this for me.

      The rollers on the roombas are garbage, I have an I7+ and an s9+. They both use similar rollers and they are essentially destroyed by hair in a few weeks. You saw it in this video with the long hair test. The long hair started cutting into the roller and if left alone it would cut thru thru the roller.

    • @mrtks34
      @mrtks34 Před 2 lety +1

      Zardif did you clean the brushes regularly? If not, hair rolls pile up and start to damage the brushes. Regular cleaning as advised would prevent the cuts you mentioned. Or if such hair collects and cuts alteady in one cleaning then your home might have more than normal hair gathered on the floor than a regular flat, maybe due to many people living?

      @@mrtks34 I'm confused by your comment. Many home owners have multiple people with hair living in their household. Ideally a vacuum should be able to withstand vacuuming hair, as it's so common. Absolutely nothing against this channel or the review. I very much appreciated the thorough and systematic nature! But though many things about the vacuum that looked very promising, so far I'm not impressed with the S7. I have a medium sized business that I wanted to clean overnight. Though it was mentioned in reviews, I think it must be emphasized.
    This system --- MUST --- HAVE --- LIGHT --- in order to map. (leave your lights on overnight kind of light)
    The first night, it failed 4 times and ultimately got "stuck" against the leg of a chair. Presumably because it couldn't see far enough with it's built in LED to understand its location. I've always used LIDAR systems, so maybe I'm spoiled. In that regard, I also was disappointed with the app. With my LIDAR based systems, it instantly maps (from the first instant off the dock) and you can follow along remotely to see which room it is in and the path that it has cleaned to that point. With this system, I moved it into an unused room and started mapping this morning. It took 2 attempts (90 minutes) in a 300sqft room before it was happy with its map, which said that a square room wasn't square. Then, sending it on its first vacuum run, I can't see any information about the progress or its location on the map. Might be a good system for a home, where people have quiet times set for the system, but I think I'm going to return it and go with the Roborock S4 (as I have no need for the mop feature) based on Vacuum Wars other reviews, it seems like a better option for what I'm looking for. I would use what I have at home (360 Robot Vacuum Cleaner S10), but their support has been questionable and they stopped selling the brushes and filters for the old model (360 Robot Vacuum Cleaner S5) that I currently have cleaning the upstairs. Just my experiences and wanted to share in case anyone else wanted to read...

Also will hit something and then proceed to keep trying to go through the same obstacle over and over before moving on. Also doesn’t finish an area before going to the next. It will be doing the dining room then go off to a bedroom then it comes back to do some more, then go to the bedroom again. It might do this a dozen times. It’s really annoying not to mention the battery wastage travelling backward and forward from one end of the house to the other over and over.
