hello everyone !! hope this finds you well wherever you are :-)
as some of you will know i’m currently touring north america with my good friends the once and stu larsen . we’re only a week in and we’re having a wonderful time so far ! we flew in to atlanta and have been working our way up the east coast . i’m writing this backstage at summer stage in central park …. no big deal haha .
before the tour started we all got together to think of cool ways of documenting our travels and giving you guys a little insight in to what we’re up to .
we came up with this …..
every week (hopefully) we will be posting a little video of us all playing a cover song . the idea is that each song will in some way be linked to the place we’re playing in - for example it could be the artist/bands hometown or the song will reference the city in some way or it may have a personal story attached to it .
this first one is from nashville . its a song called angel from montgomery (confusing …) and its by one of my favourite artists of all time john prine .
the reason i chose this song is this ….
six or seven years ago i came to nashville for the first time to do some writing with people . it was good fun and a great learning experience but also a bit of a weird time as i didn’t really know any one so i found myself with time to kill .
i wanted to take advantage of being in nashville and so one (really really ) hot day i grabbed my guitar and decided that my mission was to meet john prine and play him some songs …. whether he liked it or not … god that sounds really creepy …..
i made several school boy errors . i didn’t bring a map or any sun block and i had completely underestimated the walk . i ended up spending the best part of three hours wandering around and getting very lost on music row .
when i finally turned up at john prines record label i was a sweaty and sunburnt mess but elated that i’d finally made it . i pressed the buzzer and to my disappointment found out that john was in chicago .
i still hope that i can one day meet john but for now this will have to do .
as always we rely on you guys entirely to like , comment and most importantly share the video if you can . thank you for taking the time to read and watch .
massive thanks to bryan dos reis for filming this so beautifully .
to simon kemp and russ matterson for capturing the audio so well .
to james scott for his wonderful lighting .
stu , the once , and a huge thanks to the marathon music works for being so accommodating .
loads of love . mike x

When I woke up this morning to the news of his passing , I made a coffee and sat at my kitchen table with my guitar , played a handful of my favourite songs of his and cried my eyes out .
I genuinely feel like I’ve lost a close friend .
John Prine was a man of fantastic humour and deep insight . His songs were bursting with wit and empathy . He weaved expertly from the hilarious to the heartbreaking . His music was both complex and fantastically simple . He taught me so much as a songwriter, performer and a as human being . He also had the most infectious smile in the world .
I was lucky enough to see him live about 15 years ago in London and it was an absolute master class . I look back now and realise that it wasn’t only one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to but one of the greatest nights of my life .
I knocked on the door of his record label some years later when I was in Nashville but sadly he was touring ... probably a good thing as I had no idea what I’d say to him If he had have been there ...
When on tour in 2014 Stu Larsen , The Once and I covered “Angel from Montgomery” (shot by Brian dos reis) and he / his team posted it on his socials .... it was a wonderful feeling to know that he might have watched us singing his song ... and hopefully enjoyed it .
He didn’t get the recognition that some of his peers may have enjoyed but the people who listened to him understand just how special he was .
Although I never knew him I will miss him so much .
R.I.P John Prine . Thank you for everything x
Bellissima.... RIP❤️
I'm so so sorry for your loss. 💔
Passenger It's a very sad time for most, but after reading yr mms of kind words o had to take a look, and the humour of this guy was obvious from just listening to one song. Thank you for introducing me to another amazing artists ❤️❤️😘❤️
Honestly, I didn't know how many people loved him. When I was a kid, his concerts where ones we could afford to go to. We saw him at folk festivals and the old Ontario Place Forum. His music was part of the soundtrack of my childhood. I had to call my mother to tell her, because I didn't want her to find out on Facebook. It does feel like losing a friend...
I'm so sorry your heart is hurting today Mike. Sending you so much love and light. I pray your heart finds peace today. May your heart feel at ease and may inspiration flow. So sorry for the loss your heart is feeling 💔💜

I really adore you mike! You got amazing voice!I like how you keep doing what you love with your friends even though your song already became a global hit and you're a successful artist in the common social cognition. I can still feel your passion in music!keep on doing it with your heart! You really inspire me and I believe I will keep on doing what I love no matter how hard it might be
Put these covers on vinyl and I swear I'll pay anything. I seldom get overly emotional about music, but this stuff is killing me in the best way. Passenger is like a whole new realm of "my perfect style of music."
What Jill said!
I feel the same really^^
Beautiful song!
One of my Dads Favorites, Played this to him on his last day with us.
She has the most beautiful smile!
+Sarah Miller She obviously enjoys what she is doing and it comes out in her music.
Sweet medicine for the soul!
that lady sings like an angel ,,and you know mike makes it all good !!! big fan
I'm a woman named after my grandmother who listens to this little song of yours just about every day. R.I.P. John Prine, dead at 73 from coronavirus.
His voice must be what an old soul sounds like.
This has been a favorite song of mine since the mid-70's. I have sung it countless times and heard many covers. This is, by far, THE BEST treatment of it I have ever enjoyed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
He really worked on description, you gotta love him...
What a beautifull voice she has :)
makes me melt in my chair,
I was turned on to this song when I was around 25.Singing around the fire in Merritt Island and Cape Canaveral with Casey, Bo, Capt.Buckett, Jimmy Young and whomever else would happen in. Being From Montgomery, It held and still does hold special meaning for me and on occasion can still be heard outside my shower door!! Still my all time favorite John Prine Song. These Guys do a really good Job.
Saw Prine in Tampa in 2000 with Iris Dement and I felt he expressed everything I was feeling about the South. I am Australian yet something of that time in the South will always be in my heart. I am so glad you love his music and this is a beautifully rendered cover. Thank you I love your music it has the same spirit as Prine's and Dement's music and is as universal.
Such a beautifully sad song.
I love how it's filmed at Marathon Music, I was at the concert that night, never knew they were filming a music video inside. But we did enjoy a nice sound-check concert from the outside.
What a beautiful compliment to John Prime AND Bonnie Raitt. Hope you come around close to Cleveland sometime. This stirs me.
Oh, and Stu, harmonica - awesome!
Mike you and your friends are the best; another great song.glad you all in North America. From Alabama best wishes
I rarely take the time to hit the 'like' button on facebook songs, but as a long time Prine fan, and having heard several versions of this song I just wanted to say you did it justice, and made a version that can hang with Bonnie Raitt's. Definitely sharing this out to my circle of demented friends.
I am 70 yrs. old love your music.I am going to your concert in indianapolis.
My hope for humanity is restored , when these voices combine . Thanks
As an avid John Prine fan, this seems like what this song was made for. It made the hair on the back of neck stand up. Haunting. Thank you so much for this....
I love this guy.
love you Passenger

This is one of my favourite songs ever. Loved it when Bonnie Rait sang it, loved it when John Mayer sang it, Loved it when Dave matthews sang it, of course loved it when john Prine sang it... you are in very good company. And LOVE the fact that you have chosen Newfoundland band The Once to accompany you on this song and your tour. Just beautiful.

FABULOUS..
Beautiful.
Wow... I am absolutely a fan of John Prine, since I was a young boy. I am a huge fan of Mike's, which led me here. What a beautiful sound, how naturally soulful it is. You really want to find John, come down to calico rock, Arkansas. Find a big (old) hotel. We can travel half an hour to the sylamore area and talk to the right folks.
So glad Passenger etc. have done this song. One of my all time favourites since i heard John Denver singing it a long time ago. Not listened to any other version til now.
Beautiful
Beautiful. I hope these videos introduce more people to The Once and especially to Geraldine's lovely lovely voice, which we here in Newfoundland have been enjoying for years and which the rest of the world needs to hear.

Just heard this song tonight at Stubbs! Great concert great collaboration.
that was a version of the song that matched John prine's himself. folk music has always made me emotional and this song made me cry. I saw the once at the Edmonton folk music festival and they were amazing. it would be an honor to have passenger come to. your music is beautiful! keep it up.
You've done it again, Mike--you sing our songs and tell our stories through your heart and your voice; and this time, with a little help from your friends. ;) I look forward to seeing you at last in Wellington on January 31!
