Are women in a gender equal country sexually satisfied?

  • In this video I problematize the casual sex culture of Iceland with their high gender equality scores and democratic and political status in mind. Iceland is famous for casual sex, and how women in Iceland find causal sex normal. Are Icelandic women truly sexually liberated? I am answering this question based on the ideas I introduced in my previous videos around the politics of sexual pleasure and sex & international development. Hope you will find it interesting X
    Big thank you to my interviewees for generously offering their time to talk to me and their experiences! Due to the brevity of the video I was unable to use our conversation in its full length, but I tried to balance both the positive and negative comments. My participants emphasised in the interviews that what is being said represents their views and what they and their friends experience, which may be very different from other people's perspective.

    You have raised a complex and interesting question. Although I am not a woman, and I do not live and have never been to Iceland, but I will try to express my thoughts. In the modern world, the division into two types of countries is obvious. In some countries, the rights of women, sexual minorities, national groups are well protected. Such countries, as a rule, are developed and democratic. In others, on the contrary, there is discrimination based on gender or nationality and other types of discrimination. These are, most often, underdeveloped countries with authoritarian or totalitarian forms of government. Very often this situation is explained by following the tradition. I live in Russia. Now there is an intense shift towards totalitarianism and the suppression of all diversity. It is sad. But many find in it positive aspects for themselves. For example, the opportunity to feel belonging to the power of the state. This is also reflected in the relationship between the sexes. Not long ago, we passed a law decriminalizing domestic violence. All this is not very good. But is there a direct connection between sexual satisfaction and a free society, intolerance to violence? Observation shows that many women in Russia prefer aggressive men, the so-called alpha males. They are ready to endure beatings and humiliation, but from time to time receive expensive gifts, such as clothes made of fur or jewelry. Men who respect the rights of women, do not use violence against them, are not rude, including in sex, do not arouse interest in such women. This, in my opinion, is due to the fact that sexual desire is an ancient and powerful instinct that cannot be quickly transformed to fit modern ideas of good and evil. Therefore, unfortunately, both men and women, who adhere to the old ideas about how interaction between them should take place, probably get the maximum pleasure. The only possible solution to this problem may be the establishment of a trusting relationship in a couple. When during sex, neither party expects a subsequent charge of rights violations, often with legal consequences.

      Hello and thank you so so much for watching and for sharing your thoughts! The observation you describe and the theory you offer are both super interesting, however, as they are not research based it is difficult to consider them. I do agree on your point that links politics and sexuality. In fact, Wilhelm Reich linked the two and made some very interesting points around radical left-wing politics and sexual freedom - you might find it interesting. And since him, there have been a lot of thinkers in social sciences who explored the connection. I find it hard to believe that women actually want to be with men who are violent toward them. Very doubtful. The question is, why they are not the ones who are in the position to buy those expensive items for themselves? How come that set up always resembles the same pattern: men has the access to wealth, women might endure stuff so they can access men's wealth? How come we don't see a different pattern there? Why do these men block women's access?

      Thanks for the detailed answer. You probably know that in the history of Russia there was a period of ultra-left politics. This happened between the revolution of 1917 and the establishment of Stalin's dictatorship. During this period, there was an exceptional expansion of women's rights, including in matters of sex. Abortions were allowed, conditions were created for women to work in all areas of the economy, the institution of church marriage was abolished, and even the theory of the "glass of water" arose. This theory said that sexual intercourse was no more important than drinking a glass of water. Freedom of sexual relations was declared at the state level. Subsequently, all this was stopped and a traditionalist approach to relations between men and women was established. But the opportunity to work and hold high and paid positions for women in the USSR remained. Therefore, it is difficult to argue that there are historical prerequisites for the infringement of women's rights to work in this case. Obviously, as in many other countries, there was a bias against women in terms of work and career development. But in any case, the career path that opens access to many benefits and well-being requires significant effort. It is much easier to get all this in a very different way, using sex as an access mechanism. Likewise, career advancement was often secured by sexual relations with management. Surely this is not an exclusively female path, many men have acted in the same way, but it was still a much less common and more socially condemned strategy. However, all this is only a description of the phenomena associated with the social structure, which is changing incomparably faster than the biological nature of a human being. At certain moments in the historical development of specific societies, circumstances are possible when human nature comes into conflict with laws or morality. Attitudes towards sex in ancient Rome and in medieval Christian Europe are diametrically opposed. Sexual attraction itself could not be affected by changes in social norms. But as for pleasure, it could be overshadowed by the consciousness of a sin being committed, for example. But on the other hand, it is individual. And to someone, such awareness could, on the contrary, bring additional pleasure. Thus, this question is very difficult. It is necessary to deeply analyze this topic, separating the biological and sociocultural aspects, revealing the areas of their intersection and mutual influence.

    Agree! We often say certain countries have gender equality but this IS usually just based on political power, work sector or even dating patterns alone - this is so problematic using these countries then as 'good' examples for the rest of the world. Sexual equality has to be at the centre.

      Hi Greg, thanks for watching & huge welcome to the channel! Great point!! Perhaps I will make a second video on that at some point. However, the essence of the video meant to be not so much about how much people are sleeping around, but rather, that men still dominate women despite being a supposedly gender-equal country. Meaning, perhaps we need to focus on other indicators as well, not just political & economic participation and legal framework, but social norms and sexual norms and maybe other things too. I appreciate you sharing your perspective and I think it would make a great video in the future! Thanks again!

    I definitely find casual sex a negative thing and not a requisite of gender equality, nor do I understand why people conflate the two of them. The question would be "Are women in a sexually liberal country sexually satisfied?".

    • @KatalinZsiga
      @KatalinZsiga  Před rokem

      Hi - thanks so much for watching and for your comment! To your first point, it is very complex but to condense it - sexuality is a main site of control of populations. Therefore, there is definitely a correlation between sexual freedom & the cultivation of democratic values and equality. But more importantly, I believe this video has answered your second question. Which is where equality comes into play - there is more to gender equality than the various SDG indicators for example. The legal framework, the opportunities, and the systems to enable people to live in relative equality are extremely important (these are the boxes Iceland ticks), but they are not enough, there are toxic social norms that burden men with enormous responsibilities sometimes in places where there is no way for them to fulfil those socially set expectations, at the same time these social norms allow men to have power over women based on nothing more but their gender. That is where we need to do some more work. Again, thank you so much for watching!

      Sexual liberation for women only. They always discriminate against men and sleep with top tier men. Its not utopia, a society/culture will always cease to exist without family values, they will either wipe themselves out or taken by other cultures who have stronger family values irrespective of the other negative trends of the culture. Wake up! If you dont give back to the traditional norms, you will not have anything to hold onto.
