  • Here are all the lessons, tips, and obstacles I encountered during my recent DIY staircase makeover. From the prep work, to sanding, taping angled stair rails, stripping with Citristrip, using a Gel Stain, and applying a wipe on Polyurethane...It's ALL here!! You do NOT want to embark on a project like this without seeing the things that can go wrong and how to prevail.

    Wood conditioner on raw wood creates a uniform surface to apply stain, eliminating blotches and blushing. Good job!

    I watched another video in which the youtuber had the same problems with the gel stain. She discovered that the sponge brush was the culprit and started using a cloth to put on the gel stain and it made a world of difference. You did a great job, looks great!

    I've been putting off staining my maple staircase handrail for 24 years now. I could shoot myself
    for not staining it before it was installed by the trim carpenters but I did paint all of the balusters
    and newel post prior to installation. I might tackle it this year but I'm so paranoid of staining
    around carpet and walls. I will take all precautions and hang plastic sheeting over everything.
    I'll have to try to reproduce the same stain mixture I used on the stair treads and use a pre-stain conditioner to avoid blotchiness. I pray I have as much patience and success as you!

    The end result is beautiful! I have my own stair project started for almost eight months now and I am halfway through with sanding.
    From all the videos I have watched on yt, you are the first one to show problems along the way when tackling a stair diy project. Also, the step breakdown and tips are great!

    It looks really nice, a lot of people simply use the gel stain like paint, no wiping with a towel, a few coats should do it.

    Thank you for this video. You have helped me decide to paint the railing instead. I have birds, and no option to move them out of the house to be able to strip the wood. The fumes from the stripping solution would kill them. But the final product of your project does look beautiful.

    Im finishing up my stairway remodel and im glad i watched your video. Kudos to you for not settling and going back and re-staining even though it is such a pain to go backwards.

    I am having the same problems on my stair railing project. I was beginning to think I was crazy since every other video made gel stain on stairs look so easy. So glad I found your video. Don't know if I have the patience to strip mine like you did and start over though!

      I totally get that!! I'm so happy with the results but it was quite an ordeal and I'm glad to be done with it, LOL!! Good luck!!

    Thank you so much for your video. I just did one coat of gel stain using sponge brush on my stairs and it looks horrible. The stain is heavy and uneven. I need to strip it off. By watching some other videos, it seems so easy so I decided to DIY.

    Loved the project you took on. Par for the course for me but the journey with you was awesome. Great choices with amazing results in a video that's better than most.

    This is awesome! So glad I stumbled on your video. I'm in the planning phase for changing from carpeted stairs to just a strip up the middle as well as darkening the stair railing. Still deciding whether I will paint the balusters similar to yours or change to wrought iron. I was starting to think I'd have to spend a small fortune to either entirely replace my railing, or have someone restain the existing. Your video gives me hope! I'm pretty handy and I could take as much time as I want/need to do this part of the work before the professionals do their part. Also appreciate your pointing out the sticking points, products and tools used, etc. You did a beautiful job - congrats!!

    Wow, that was some work! In the end it looks great. Personally, I would have stained the wood between the spindles instead of painting white. I think the finished product would have looked better, but as long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters.

    what is the neat sander you used with the pointy finger attachment?

    Really really helpful.
    Our white spindles need a new coat of white paint. Do you have a recommendation about painting those first, then protecting or doing them last?? What would you do?
    Thanks much!

    • @uniquelyursula87
      @uniquelyursula87  Před rokem

      I'm fairly certain I would do all the staining first and then paint. Even with all my spindle precautions, some stain still managed to get on the spindles in a few random places.

    If my rail is currently all white, top section I want to stain, do I have to sand the existing white paint off?

    • @uniquelyursula87
      @uniquelyursula87  Před 10 měsíci

      I would try the Citristrip remover first and then just sand off any stubborn places. But you do have to remove the paint before staining.

    What grit sandpaper did you use before staining the second time?

    • @uniquelyursula87
      @uniquelyursula87  Před 2 lety

      I'm fairly certain I used a 220 grit very lightly just prior to staining for the second time.

    Nice! How long did you wait between applying the stain and the wipe on poly? Love that you’re drinking wine at same time.

    • @uniquelyursula87
      @uniquelyursula87  Před rokem +1

      I'm pretty sure I waited at least 24 hours or more before application. I usually wait at least as long as the instructions say or even just a touch longer.

    Maple does not stain evenly like other woods.

      That's why you need to use a conditioner prior to staining.

    Going darker is easy easy. Now try removing dark stain to make the oak lighter oy vey
