I read an article in The Guardian titled "The Loneliness of the Low-Ranking Tennis Player" the other day. I had never thought about just how hard it is to be out there trying to climb up the rankings--the loneliness, the time on the road, the time away from family, the difficulty in finding practice partners at tournaments, etc. Much respect to you for getting back out there and putting yourself through it. It's easy to see how even very talented players like you would question whether or not it is worth it. Thank you for sharing it with us. Glad to see you having success.

  • @brandonvereyken4869

You are quite literally improving with every match. I've never seen your forehand this good. I've never seen your returns this good! Your movement and incredible backhand are still off the challenger charts- main tour quality on those two for sure.
I love most the way you are never satisfied. How good you are now is just not good enough. Don't practice every day to improve everything. Practice EACH day to truly improve ONE thing. Huge amounts of practice on ONE thing is when improvements really happen, and as in any sport, you don't always see it in the practice, but the following day or match, when you suddenly FEEL that it's right there when you need it.
I don't know all your particulars, but your first serve looks effective to me even at this level, and I'd say the same about your second. Is this correct? Because if the stats on winning your second serve points ever struggle, at whatever level you are playing, then it's time to consider two flat serves which has a number of advantages I can go into if you want the mathematics of it all.
If you are a 60 percent in flat server- and you try 2 flat serves instead, then you will get a flat serve (THE FIRST ONE) in 60% of the time, which leaves the other 40% of the time trying to win behind the second. But if the second is another flat serve, you will get 60% OF that other 40% in. In mathematical word problems the word "OF" translates to multiplying. So 60% X 40% is 24%.
So, 60% of the time you get the first one in PLUS 24% of time the second one goes in, yielding a total of 84% of the points in your service games start with a hard flat serve in, and you win a huge percentage behind these. This basically mean you hand the opponent one double fault per service game, sure, but how many points does he win now by getting an aggressive return on your second serve?
Two flat serves is very disconcerting to an opponent. It basically takes the racquet out of his hands and totally disrupts his normal return game feel. ALSO- occasionally you will throw in a spin serve- especially on a first serve, and he will totally flub these because he is never expecting this. In fact, you will want to save these largely for pressure points that you really need, because you might be more likely to double fault under pressure.
2 Flat serves has other advantages- you only need to practice one serve mostly, so you will improve it much more, especially in landing percentage, but also MPH and accuracy. If you start getting 70% in, the numbers are amazing. 91% of the time you will get one in! This means only around one double fault per TWO games almost, and at that point it's almost impossible to lose service games unless DJokovic is returning.
This might not apply to you because your second serve looks really good but again, I don't know what your stats are behind your second serve.

Congrats. Well deserved. What impressed me most, how calm and patient you stay in these matches. 👏You really sending a strong message to your opponents. You got to beat me. I will not do it for you. 😉

Before I saw your end commentary, I kept asking if there was a speed gun on Habib's serve because I've never seen someone take the racket out of your hand on return, not even Fritz in your practice match. That last game was so clutch. I had a couple matches in college that were close that I squeaked out but that was about as good as it gets, because out of the last 5 points only the last was an unforced error. Bravo!

Don't know but it seems your serve went up another few notches. Huge and needed to beat a guy like Habib. Congrats! Keep the momentum rolling!

DUDE what a match! that was a battle. Your serve was HUGE too, i think all you could do was return his serve center court. as a fellow 30 year old this is so inspiring

Nice match. Ive enjoyed watching your forehand progress. In the old Osaka videos you had that racket high-face the back fence take back, and I remember noticing a year or so ago that you have switched to the more Federer,Dimitrov take back where the racket head faces the ground. But, what I noticed specifically in this video is how loose your wrist looks when your racket snaps back in the slot right before your swing forward to contact. Its really cool, cause you always say you aren't a wristy player, but that racket looking (Nadal) loose! :)

I like these baseline heavy big serve matches, you definitely have stepped up your game. He loved to run around his backhand which I think cost him a few points.
