Rune is really only a top-20 player at the moment. He could be overtaken soon by Shelton of the same age. And there are much younger players such as Jakub Menšík, Joao Fonseca, etc ready to catch up.
Fonseca is 3 years younger, surely he'll catch him up. Mensik 2 years younger, in my opinion is already very close to rune
Yesterday Mensik played the match of his life,he reached his peak level...we will see if tomorrow he's able to play at the same level. In my opinion it's just a peak result like the Dubai final as well

Rune is a highlight reel and shotmaker and magician but still lack consistency, shot selection and patience too frequently. Hope he improves bc he has great strokes when in the zone, good power and ridiculous touch.
He played his best when facing break points in the second set, although none of those are in the highlights. He also made some easy mistakes to give Griekspoor those opportunities. After winning the set he lost concentration for a longer while and Griekspoor took the advantage without blinking. The Dutchman played an almost perfect set of tennis, especially in his service games. So Rune needs to avoid these bits of matches when he goes away mentally and gets behind too quickly.
He also looked a bit flat at the end of third set, so maybe physical strength and stamina is still an issue for him. He has the skills to win more regularly and challenge the very best for big titles, but needs to tame his temperament. I would also like to see improvements on his inside out forehand. During rallies, that shot is often too slow and loopy and it can get attacked.
@@patrikmarflak6559 The kid is still 20, stamina, concentration issues, taming temperament/getting more patient are all things that usually improve with more maturity and experience for such young players. What's hard to learn and improve for any player is touch, variability, shotmaking and mental strength, all things that seem to come natural for him. He's still No.12 in the race and people seem to overreact about his current slump, similar how people tend to overreact whenever Alcaraz has a slight slump. Rune will improve, there's just too much talent in him for not to.
Edit: Only thing I'm worried about is the influence of his mother though, seems to be a similar strange relationship Tsitsi has with his dad...
@@mireafelder8194 I agree with everything you said. Especially the mother, it’s good you mentioned it. I know it’s hard for some parents to distance themselves from their kid’s career they have worked on so hard, but I think it would help him. Maybe it would be more difficult for a few months, but I believe the sooner a kid is on his own the faster he matures. We can see it with Alcaraz, yes, his dad is often there in the stands, but he is not a member of his team and Carlos seems to have these healthy and respectful professional relationships between him and his box. With Rune it’s quite messy. But also they are different personalities and everyone has his own path to maturity, so I never judged Rune and can’t really understand the amount of hate he always gets. He is a great young player and once everything will click for him, he will be back in top 5, no doubt about it.

I like Talon. I feel that he just not very consistent. It would be great if he was. When he’s on though, it seems like he can just about beat anyone.

I get the impression Rune has been working towards making his forehand a reliable weapon, so he can play more aggressively. It seems to be getting there, and perhaps his game will be mature in the next couple of years. I don't think he's going to do a Shapovalov, but only time will tell.

Rune is a great player but is too highly regarded. About a solid 15-25 I think and not in the converation of the Alcaraz, Sinner and probably not even Shelton amd some other young guns.

Rune first serve is among us not the worst top 20 players. And 2nd serve is among if not the worst in the top 30, maybe 40😅 this is why he loses this kind of matches

If the opponent smashes the ball and it's going in the crowd, you throw the racquet up in the air as hard as you can and hit the ball and then break a spectator's nose. That's a legitimate shot, but I bet you won't get away with it.

Rune doesn’t play like a Top 10 player seeing how inconsistent he is. Maybe his emotions get the better of him, but he surely doesn’t have a tactic to many opponents that is effective or that he executes.

Griekspoor really is a good closer, such a difference with countryman VDZ who is more talented. A few more wins like this and Griekspoor might start believing he can beat top 5-10 players on a regular basis, and then he could get really dangerous as he has an all court game with weapons. About Rune: every day he loses is a good day.

Rune increasingly appears he has limited weapons. Based on these highlights, his only special shot is his finessed half volley pickup at the net. Hitting smashes repeatedly at the opponent instead of the open court…his coach needs to be put to pasture.
Over the last year, Rune has been coached by Mouratoglou (until April 2023), no one for a couple of months when his results were terrible, then Mouratoglou again (August-September 2023), then Boris Becker from October 2023, somewhere in there they also hired and fired Severin Luthi within 2 months, and finally just brought in Mouratoglou again a month ago. Perhaps this revolving-door coach approach is due to Rune's mental problems, or due to his mom's micromanaging character (she's both his agent and hires and fires the coaches, and also determines all the dietary supplements he takes, not Mouratoglou's team), but one could very much argue the problem is not with coaching at this point.
@@gto6254 you're knowledgeable about this so you're surely right. Rune's flashy style may hide basic flaws in his game which no coach can fix. There've been so many players that I thought were going to top, only to fizzle (after beating Novak, that's where I thought Karatsev would go)....a fan of Hurcacz and Bublik but neither will likely go as far as I thought they could.

Please Runes team: hire a proper dietist and a sports psychologist. Runes shot selection is like a local club players, he dropshots waaay too often and gifts breakpoints left and right. 12 breakpoints for Tallon.
If he just had better endurance, shot selection and overall focus/mentality he would be top 5 cause his talent is through the roof. Maybe as he matures who knows...

And this is why rune needs to properly cement his whole game, his mentality especially. When he switches that switch he is elite, when the switch is not on we have a slow starter who makes many mistakes. Holger, the cap is still on your head.. and stop pulling your shorts up to show your legs off. This kid needs brought to reality he is not the best player in the world, he can certainly compete when his A game is more consistent in the game.

I think Rune is at an impasse right now. His progress has stopped and he doesn't know what to do or even how to react to it. He doesn't even want to play anymore, to fight for a win. Now a lot will depend on the coach or psychologist. But I wouldn't want to be his coach at this point. 😅
