As a white South African, AS has hit the mark so hard on the head. Dude thank you. This is what we all saying. Dricus and us Afrikaners don't exist outside of Africa. Our culture has been formed with our language over 400 years. Dricus is of French heritage. They arrived here in 1668. I think it's fair to say we are Africans by now. Just like Americans are no longer Europeans either. Not dissing Izzy. It's just DDP is the first ever from an African gym. On the world stage, still living in Africa. That's what he is saying.

    • @coloureds

Dricus will be the FIRST African to bring the title to Africa!
Izzy is a spoilt brat who lives a privileged life in NZ!
He was trained in NZ, grew up in NZ but wants to pretend his success is from Nigeria. His just doing it because its trendy so say you come from struggle and he doesn't want to admit he grew up in a privileged country. He is jealous of DDP because he will make African MMA history

I think people understand what DDP was TRYING to say. But what he DID say was that HE was the REAL African. Taking away the African-ness of the African fighters born in Africa with thousands of years of heritage from Africa. He doubled down rather than acknowledge how what he said is lacking historical context and legacy of African fighters before him. Yes, it’s dope he could be the first fighter from an African gym at that level. But he is NOT the FIRST African champion.

@zeplin8971 Izzy not an African he an unhinged, identity obsessed, egotistical merican (from a US vassal state). Never seen Africans act so insecure, petty, and arrogant, unless they obsessed with merican unhinged culture. Rich safe new zealand is very very different to south africa

In the lead up to the first fight, Izzy said that Rob Whittaker was not a real Kiwi (New Zealander) despite the fact he was born in NZ, he said because Rob left he isn't a Kiwi anymore. Well, Izzy left Nigeria just like Rob left NZ. And according to his own logic, he isn't an African, because he left just like Rob did.

Bro, please have some empathy. No child leaves home to go to a strange land like it’s not a huge loss. The fact that DDP can say that he’s never left is because in the place he’s calling he is privileged at least more so than other populations in the country. He’s not just a South African but a white South African. Lemme see a black native and indigenous SA say that. They probably wouldn’t be so haughty and uneducated. DDP isn’t in Africa because he or his family emigrated there. He as born there because his ancestors arrived there many generations ago from Europe. If the natives didn’t sell them the land that his settling ancestors called their own then most likely they went to war with the indigenous people of that day and claimed the land as spoils of war. White EUROPEAN ancestors shed native Black African blood or otherwise stole that land for DDP to be born there. DDP may call Africa as home but he cannot truthfully claim he is PURE African without acknowledging his white ancestry. Hence he is White South African. With that status he is afforded the privilege that makes him relatively more comfortable than any person of color in SA indigenous or otherwise. Hence he wouldn’t dream of leaving to better himself or family, while black African people with their families are forced to do so every day.

I mean look at how he kept stuttering and glancing over at Aljo every other word hoping not to say the wrong thing.
Let's all just be real here. DDP didn't say anything wrong, only that he'd be the first African champion according to what he considers to be an African champion which consists of living there, training there, and bringing the belt back there after a fight, not simply having African ethnicity. Izzy came in swinging acting BLATANTLY racist calling him a cracker and shit and saying how he's not really an African because he's white.
Stop pussyfooting around it and just call it what it is. No need to do that "well if I moved to Switzerland and had a kid would he truly be Swiss". That's not DDP's situation at all. More like if your great great great great great grandparents moved to Switzerland and never left, that's all you ever knew and all your kids ever knew. Would you be cool with some white Swiss dude WHO DOESN'T EVEN LIVE THERE telling you you're not really Swiss? Stop the cap you'd be pissed and call him racist, keep that energy for Izzy. Aljo himself can't even claim to be a "jamaican champ" because he's never lived there and ONLY knows how to fight because he learned in America, he's an American champ just like Izzy is a NZ champ.
Also, the fact that he's saying "nigga" is ridiculous. Africans don't use that slang (outside of VERY few young kids saying it to sound cool and emulate American slang which the older people scold them for) as it has no meaning for them. The ONLY reason black people in America started saying it was to essentially take the power from it, an African has no business saying it at all since they have nothing to do with any of that, their ancestors stayed put. Especially Izzy's wealthy slave owning ancestors.

While some maintained separateness, others were grouped into a category known as Coloureds, a multiracial ethnic group legally defined by apartheid authorities. The definition included people with shared ancestry from two or more of these groups: Khoisan, Bantu, English, Afrikaners, Austronesians, East Asians and South Asians.

He was beat up and bullied because he was black in a white majority country…. I know he felt real racism. For any descendant of white man to claim a greater African-ness than any Africa born Native black is not good. DDP has to acknowledge what his forefathers did to get the land he claims…. He and his family must repent to God and the people who were disenfranchised (if any) by the actions of his forefathers and mothers. These things seem like nothing today, but they are serious before God almighty the judge of all the earth who reigns forever amen.

Izzy might chin Dricus pretty easy after that last Pereira fight. It would be good to see Dricus against Cannonier and Vettori, Strickland as well, but they were all booked against each other and he just crushed Whittaker, so i guess he gets fast tracked to the title since Izzy needs a fresh contender. after knowing nothing about this situation, seeing how rattled and emotional izzy was, and reading what was actually said, this situation is very easy to diagnose.
Hit dogs holler. DDP's comments HURT Izzy and Kumaru ....because they were TRUE, he was simply putting a MIRROR up to them because he is DOING what they REFUSE to do--- live in Africa (regardless of his ethnic origin).
People like Izzy/Kumaru claim to be PROUD Africans, but deep down they feel GUILT, SHAME, COWARDLY and HYPOCRITICAL for claiming to be AFRICAN but leaving the continent and not coming back to live when they EASILY can. The dissonance is uncomfortable.
Their love for AFRICA is just WORDS, not ACTIONS ie. talking the talk but not walking the walk. Deep down they know this...and it BOTHERS them.

Your write up makes no sense. Izzy migrate to New Zealand not by his making but his parents. He was still a minor and was dependent on his parents when they moved. Most of his life was spent in New Zealand where he started his MMA career. How can you blame Izzy for not staying in Africa? Dricus was born in South Africa and had his parents settled there, so there was no need of him moving to a different country. The talk of being more African coming from Dricus because he resides in Africa is useless! It's not necessary at all. If you ask me, that's being disrespectful to the other Africans in the UFC who don't live in Africa.
We all have families living outside their country of birth. People move to different countries for different reasons and that don't make them any less. The problem is when you start to question their identity, or not link their achievements to their country or continent of birth.
As a matter of fact, Dricus is working under the UFC that happens to be a US company and not an African company. So, if he's more African who reside, breath and sleep in Africa, he should have just stayed in South Africa and complete his MMA career there, instead of signing with the UFC that is not an African organization. Since he (Dricus) signed with the UFC and left the EFC run in South Africa, he's not in any position to talk about him being more African, when he left the EFC for greener pasture.
Dricus was looking for relevance then, now he got it. He should be ready to face the music and not acting innocent. I may not support everything said by Izzy because that was unnecessary too, but you can't tell how someone would react or respond to issues. The question people should ask is, what is the motive of Dricus saying "he was more African because he lives and breath in Africa." It was just unnecessary!

@@chriscappa1 My write up makes perfect sense. I agree with almost all of your commentary, but none of that disproves what I said. He is obviously not secure in his African identity because he doesn't live there.
DDP said what he said, regardless of your moral view of it. DDP could not make that comment if Izzy lived in Africa.
The fact that Izzy responded how he did shows how seriously hurt he is by it, and it and exposed his internal identity crisis. He has dignified this simple comment over and over. He was a having a melt down in the ring. He could barely talk, voice cracking and hurling insults and the n-word at him (which is a whole different topic for multiple different reasons). This showed how much the truth in DDP's comments rattled him.
We can also talk about how Izzy questioned Rob's Maori/NZ roots before their fight, or how he claimed that he is Chinese. So he really has no grounds to call foul IMO. He can dish it, but he cant take it.

Izzy even says i didnt question that you are African. Thats why he says "what up my African brother" - the problem stems from Dricus saying "the Real African champ", the notion of a Real African Champ implies the existence of Fake African Champs. Thats what Izzy and Kamaru were offended by. Their status as champs was undeniable, they have the belt, defended them etc, so that means that statement is challenging their African-ness.
Dricus tried to walk it back but saying he means the first Champ that has come through the South African system, born, raised, lives and trains and thats an achievement he can be proud of because that statement is 100% true but thats not what he said and if you mean something other than what you said, if it has been taken the wrong way, then you still need to apologise for the first thing (unless he secretly actually believes it and never meant to say it out loud) but he's let his Ego get in the way.
The other thing to consider, why would Izzy be so offended. Brendan Shaub mentioned this. Izzy moved away from Nigeria as a child (not his choice) and still strongly feels a connection to Nigeria and Africa (and yes He did take the belt back to Nigeria when he won it) but he was also bullied here in New Zealand for looking different, for his African-ness. And now years later, this upstart White South African (which as you touched on has its own long complicated and very emotional history) questions his African-ness - you can bet your ass thats touched a nerve.

This is the thing with Dricus. He didn't make his comments clear enough in the beginning. He clarified his comments later on but his original comments imply different things. When you say "I wanna be the first real african champ", you're implying the others aren't real african champs. "I'm the African fighter in the UFC". That implies the others aren't african fighters. " I live in africa, i breathe african air, i train in africa, i wake up in Africa, that's an african champion". Here, he is making place of residence the defining factor for whether you're an african champ or not. For him, living in Africa defines an african champ. It's like saying you can't really call yourself an african champ if you don't live and train there. For him place of residence is the most important thing. But i disagree, you dont have to live in Africa to be considered an african champ or a real african champ. I can easily come out and say Izzy is the real african champ because he has an actual african name. I can easily make that the most important factor and say he's more real than dricus. But i won't because you cant just pick and choose whats most important and say that makes you the real deal. Dricus talking about his place of residence being Africa and insinuating that makes him more real is not right. Dricus might not have meant to say they're not real african champs because they dont live there, but thats how it came across, he should have been clearer. If he had simply said " I wanna be the first african champ fighting/living out of africa" like Leon Edwards, there would have been no problem.

And DDP fight for South Africa 🇿🇦 and not Africa and that is period… you all are so silly to think your SA is representing a continent when everyone fight for their flag.
And yet you don’t see who started it than be mad at Izzy clap back.
And you want to be mad at the person that receive the message.. be mad at the one who started the message first

Cool program with the Champ Aljo! IMO, what happened was Izzy said in the past he would drag Dricus carcass across South Africa, then he gets in the octagon and calls Dricus his south african brother, and of course Dricus is gonna reject whatever "coolness' from Izzy, and he came with "what are you gonna say to your New Zealand people etc etc", then Izzy didnt like that and came with the DNA test etc etc, thats all. I dont see any racism or anything like that. Just the necessary beef for a great fight.

I am South African and I think this fight will end up being Protea vs Kiwi. South Africa, Australia and New Zealand rugby and Cricket competition.

Du Plessis is an Afrikaner. The Du Plessis family were an old French ducal house that became Huguenots. Following the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685, the family moved to Brandenburg-Prussia before migrating to Dutch Cape Colony. During the early reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, he sought support from the old French nobility to recognize his claim as emperor. Napoleon offered the head of Du Plessis of the Cape, now a farmer in Stellenbosch, to restore his titles and estates in France. However, the Du Plessis head declined, preferring "his quiet vineyard on the Berg River to the brilliant saloons of the Tuileries".

Yo Aljo, "What the point?" The point is that Dricuss is paving a way for african fighters (living in a 3rd world country) showing and proving that you can make it into the UFC and become a top fighter without moving to a first world country with 5 star gyms, infrastructure etc. Open your mind man - Thats the point. Americans havent lived in a third world country that's this thought doesnt even cross your mind
