  • Luca is our sweet, playful, social, curious, energetic, loving and smart mini donkey. He is part of our backyard urban farm and joins the other members of our half acre mini farm.
He's been part of the farm family for 2 years. We adopted him when he was 6 months old. He is like a giant puppy dog and wants to be near us whenever we are out in the yard or working in the garden. His energy can get a bit high and we needed a way to keep him safely out of our way when we need to get some work done in a hurry.
We had been dragging a heavy piece of plywood that we would prop up in the barn door opening and this was getting pretty old. Lee decided to solve the problem of keeping Luca contained by making a gate from old 2 x 4 lumber salvaged from our farmyard. It is built using half lap construction and a piece of cattle panel fencing material. It hinges and latches out of the way because we very rarely need to have Luca behind bars.
It's also a preventative solution in case we ever need to isolate for veterinary purposes. Donkeys are very healthy animals and low need, except for companionship and attention. He's so adorable and very talkative so his needs are very easily met!
If you would like to keep up with Luca and the rest of the farmyard family, as well as our urban farmyard adventures and healthy lifestyle ideas, please subscribe and turn on notifications. We'd love to have you join our farmyard family and enjoy backyard mini farm life with us.

Donkeys need another donkey. Get another boy donkey they help entertain each other.

We go back and forth between breeding him or not. Meanwhile, we've tried to pair him with several different goat companions, but he plays way too rough for them. You're right - another boy would be best right now,

Mini donkeys are not as dangerous, but you still have to keep an eye on them because they will bite you. Luca hasn't been neutered because we think me might want to breed him in the future. If he was neutered, he would be less aggressive. We like him just the way he is - very playful and funny - and he is very protective of the other animals.
