    I have lived in Panajachel since January 11th, 2020. I now spend $320.00 USD for a new studio apartment in an Airbnb run by Cirilo Tonon. Great Super Host. I can walk to Lake Atitlan in 5-10 minutes...Tuk Tuks are only 5Q one way. Best weather for someone like me at 70 years old, always feels like Spring...

    For anyone contemplating a retirement in Guatemala it's good to be aware that consumer products, basically the stuff, other than you food, you buy at a Walmart in the US are often, if not always more expensive in Guatemala (which has Walmarts but not at Lake Atitlan). Many household products and clothing (other than appliances) can be bought in open-air markets economically but basically, anything typically made in Asia will cost more in Guatemala. Living cheaply there means adopting a minimalist non consumerist life style otherwise you can end up spending as much in Guate as you might living in a rural small town in the US.

  • @sbkpilot1
    @sbkpilot1 Před 3 lety +14

    I liked San Pedro as well, Pana was nice but it looks like it's getting expensive.. I hope Guatemala does not turn into another Costa Rica!

    • @VagabondAwake
      @VagabondAwake  Před 3 lety +4

      Great point. Costa Rica is promoted like crazy in America. Now it costs almost as much to live in Costa Rica as the USA. Some parts of Costa Rica cost twice as much as certain parts of the USA. Plus, Costa Rica doesn't have the rich cultural distinctions that you find in other Latin American countries. I find Costa Rica beautiful from a nature stand point but the culture there is boring.

    Traveling inspires me. I am free to buy a ticket to most of the destinations I want to go to. After this pandemic, I am more careful about where I am going. I stayed home for more than a year. After I got a vaccine, I restart my journey. I am happy now staying in Guadalajara. I have to go to Spanish school four hours a day from Monday to Friday, and I don’t like homework.

    So true about living in a place for awhile before committing to buying something there. Met many a person who went on vacation for a few weeks and decided to live there. After some time living there the charm wore off and reality set in and they were ready to move on. I thought I could live in Guatemala in San Pedro de la Laguna. Been there 4 times from 1999 to 2006 with a total of 12 months there. My last time in 2006 I only spent a few weeks as I was bored with it by then. I guess I missed beaches so spent a lot of time in Honduras at their beaches.

      Thanks for sharing Dave. That is why I warn people about buying too soon or about only seeing a few places before deciding. You really need to take your times. There is no rush. The only people trying to rush you into buying real estate are usually getting a commision. Here is my post on that in case others missed it: vagabondbuddha.com/why-retired-expats-should-not-buy-real-estate-overseas/

I live poor at home in the US (e.g., car is 19 years old, and although the neighborhood where I live is safe, my house is definitely on the wrong side of the tracks). Hi Nikolai Potapenkov, Your personal cost of living will depend on a number of factors that only you can control. I am not a licensed financial advisor so I don't give advice based on actual facts, I share data I gather while traveling. I suggest you do an exploratory visit with your feet on the ground to determine where you will live, eat, and entertain yourself and what it will all cost. Then speak to your financial advisor about your data so they can poke holes in any of your assumptions. Thanks for watching and asking a great question so I can give this response to other readers too. Best, Dan
