I Gotta say i really really loved your first snap video i have actually shown it to many people, who i am now showing this video. again, dont be too hard on yourself, the og was good man! you can say you started at good and got to great!

Self critique is a good thing in general but it is a fine line between that and being too hard on yourself. You do amazing work and I echo the many on here who enjoyed the prior video just as much. I can't imagine how long it takes for you to come up with the material and the editing needed to be done for these videos to come out looking amazing, but I can tell you that every single one of them I have truly enjoyed (my favorite being the lightning bolt episode as I am a red mage at heart).

I'm glad you caught on. the editing motif also applies to the players designing their own cards, i.e. 'editing' the game, too.

The card highlighted in this video is definitely my personal favorite Invitational. Just in the context of Modern, the card makes so many play options that much more impactful. From the old, "bolt, Snap+bolt," control plays, to just doing the weirdest plays. I've Snapcastered a Damnation. I have done that.
That is ridiculous, I love it.
Firstly, I love your work, your videos are fantastically well put-together. I do respectfully disagree, however; I think it's more than just painting over the old legends of the game. One thing I really admired about the invitational cards was the inspiration they gave; namely, for younger players, it was almost like a challenge, like the designers were saying with each card "Play well, play hard, and maybe this could be you". Perhaps I'm a bit too nostalgic, but that was what they meant to me.

I have been watching your channel since that first video. It is amazing to realize how far this project of yours has grown and how much it's changed.
Despite disagreeing with you about the Snapcaster reprint in the first video I still loved how it was done and the approach you took to the subject.
This video is interesting in that it looks back at your own work and criticizes it, talks about how to change things up, and how things being different can be for the better while applying those exact same ideas to the invitational cards. Really impressed with it. Just how perfect this lines up is amazing.

I get that they need new iterations, but I still wished they had nods to the originals in the art or flavor text, such as having a small background character with the person's face, or even just a reference to them in the text.
Dark confidant is also great, but I always ranked infiltrator mage higher than it actually was

Did You Know Magic is okay. Not nearly to this level, but interesting enough that I watch them. They tend to be more dry facts than analysis though, which is too bad.
This has become my favorite channel. You are relaxed and informative, insightful and artistic. I feel like I'm learning, instead of being told to learn. Keep being you, Sam.
This video summarizes in a beautiful and poetic way what many players will never understand, the people depicted in those cards made history, either by creating novel strategies or new decks. This is part of magic history and I am so glad of being a part of it.

I don't think you sounded whiney in your original Snapcaster Mage video. I think that was how I discovered your channel in the first place. But I feel you sir, I recently finished my third short film a few months ago. I'm finding it difficult to go back and watch my previous flicks because I have grown as filmmaker. We're our own worst critics.

The video draws very interesting parallels to the 2017 talk from magic's art designer in which he talked a little bit about handling reprints and MaRo's 2016 talk in which he mentioned customizability as one of his lessons.

Voidmage is by far my favourite invitation card for art! Meddling is sweet to play with and i have to say in recent cards as you said the likeness of Kibler and Woo in the cards are just awesome!

I actually just found your channel last night and subbed after watching all those card studies. They were good, and even though the audio was a bit muffled like you said I didn't see anything wrong with the editing style you used back then.
Your skills have really improved, and from an outsider's perspective I'm happy for you that you're able to do all these neat effects.

I don't know how you do it, but the quality of your content increases with every new video. Every time I think you've finally hit the ceiling for what Magic content can be, you break right through it.
Great video! I love the fact that you're not above going back and admitting to changing your views on something that you seemed so against in the past. Back when I watched the original video, I was very new to MtG and wasn't quite sure what was going on with invitationals etc, but its interesting to see your new views, and be prompted to re-think some of my own.
I just love the production quality of these videos. JUST GOD. the audio is worth the watch alone. It is also very interesting content haha
Snapcaster Mage holds a special place in my heart; I started playing shortly before Innistrad came out, and Snap is the first individual card I bought worth more than a dollar. I played it for as long as it was in Standard, and I've cast it a lot since in both Modern and Legacy.
Not only is it powerful, but it embodies the best part of Magic for me: endless possibilities. It can be an Ambush Viper, a Nekrataal, a Mystic Snake, or a Lava Axe, and sometimes your Snapcasters will be all of these in the same game. It's a win condition, but also an answer.
As for the art, I'm a fan of always using the original printing of cards when I can. I'm not an old timer by any stretch, but I enjoy having the "real deal". It feels more unique. And it's this very feeling that means I support new art on old cards. For me, it means there is a very real difference between the old and the new, instead of merely a subtle frame change, for instance.
And this is, by the way, completely independent of card prices. I enjoy using my Darksteel Aether Vials even though the modern masters ones are worth more money. the old ones just feel right.

James Bond, Ethan Hunt, Jack Ryan, Domino and so many more fictional characters have had been subject to many interpretations and changes to likeness but credit to their creators have always remained and the original people/actors who represented these characters will always be acknowledged and remembered. This system can also work with MTG. Tiago Chan will always be remembered as the original Snapcaster Mage, just as how Sean Connery will always be known for playing the first incarnation of James Bond. In the former case, credit for creation will always go to Tiago Chan and in the latter case, Ian Fleming.

I don't think you were particularly whiny in your old video. I absolutely appreciate your willingness to look back and revise your opinions. While not perfect, the old video has a raw emotion to it that I appreciated.

The video "The Cultural Signifigance of Snapcaster Mmage" is absolutely one of my FAVORITE videos made on this channel to date! Yes, the production quality was not the same as today's, the word choice, timing, music, and transitions are GOLD.
Hi, just recently subscribed. Went back and watched most of your older videod. That snap caster video was actually one of my favorite videos. You're too hard on yourself. It seemed obvious it was something you felt strongly about.
I liked the video. One thing I would have loved you to mention is how R&D wanted Snappy to be red but the player convinced them to let it bend the color pie for him.

I don't know anything about the game but still find these fascinating.
As an all time fan of flavor, lore, history of the cards, decks, collections... i gotta say somehow, i see things a bit different. I cannot help to love old frames, some old arts. Take for instance, Alexander original shockland art. I love them many times over the new artwork. The other example is the new Solemn Simulacrum artwork. Is way more atractive than the original one, but i would always stay true to the oroginal one, as it was an honor extendend to the player. I still dont know how i feel about making new artworks for an invitational card. But somehow i see it different now. Thank you, great video, great series!. Agreed on every point, excellent video. I personally just put together a deck with Faerie Mastermind in it, and I'm so put off by the art that I splurged for a proxy even though I own the real card. Magic is better when we have options.
You can always get cards altered instead of running a proxy. Use one of those special sleeves even.
