  • I hardly ever buy new gear. Almost always it is used in some way. Either on craigslist, facebook, ebay, or even at the local pawn shop. In this video I give three tips on how to get stuff cheaper at pawn shops. It all comes down to knowing what the pawn shop knows. If you can figure our how much they payed for the item, then you can calculate the best deal.
    1. Know how much their lowest sell price is,
    2. Know what they payed for it,
    3. Calculate your offer. In my experience you can almost always pay 75% of the ticket price and often much lower. Pawn shops are a great place to buy used musical gear and items of all kinds. With these simple tips you will not get ripped off again.

    Man, I found a Mexican Strat about 6 months ago at a local pawn shop. I walked in willing to spend 350.00 out the door and they turned it down. The guitar obviously had been dropped. It had a huge gouge in the bottom of the body.
    I held off for about a month and a half and went back to find the same guitar still collecting dust. Again, I offered them 350.00 out the door and again they turned it down.
    I finally got fed up and started looking on my local Buy/Sell groups on Facebook and found one for $275.00 with the case and bought it that afternoon.
    That place should change their name to "Museum" instead of "Pawn Shop" seeing how they want to hold on to their stuff.

      Pawn shops are terrible in the state of Virginia. They’ll sell anything close to the retail price. I got my first Mexican strat for $150 in very good condition off of craigslist.

    Bundling more than one item is another tip you shared that is a really good one. As a salesman I used it all the time to help move a dog item, something that had been sitting there for awhile. How long an item has been on the shelf also directly effects the negotiation. They may have overpaid for , say the Vox, and underpaid for the Bugera. If you buy the Bugera, the sale come out better on paper, with better margin for the store, for that sale.

    Love this! Nobody seems to understand that whether buying or selling, pawn shops are in the business to make money. They are not all rip-off joints, but they aren’t charity shops either. Thanks for a explaining a way to negotiate a win-win for both parties.

    Hi there. I’ve been working in a pawn shop for 12 years and I have to tell you that you’re very knowledgeable. I wish more ppl knew this stuff so that they didn’t just assume I’m a “scumbag pawnbroker” looking to rob them. I realize that there are some good & bad but that goes w ANY job ever. It’s the ppl not the career. I’d rather everyone pawn and then pickup their things. Residual income for the service fee is bread & butter. Then I’ll see them again if they ever need a short term loan. For items such as tools, musical equipment, electronics, I’d always give an even better price than what you mentioned to just get it off shelves. If you don’t mind me asking, what state r u in? I know it’s nowhere near me as u mentioned 1% tax! Lol here in Connecticut it’s 6.35%. Ughh. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi, great info. I was a pawnbroker for a few years. Great job and I had a blast buying and selling musical gear every day. Your numbers were my general numbers. Half of new and half of that.....I usually didn't lowball them at first though. And, yes , if it's a nicer piece, I would usually give more than half. {Jewelry was the big exception. 1/3 of used sale price was my purchase price}

    • @216trixie
      @216trixie Před 6 lety

      Kennis Russell Jewelry is the biggest scam I know, at the new , retail, mall-store level. Example: A ring that sell for $3k at a mall store, will "appraise" for $4k. That same ring, I will sell "used", in a pawn shop and the most I'll be able to get for it might be $1k. The retail markup on jewelry is insane. Then the pawn customer goes crazy because I've offered them 4 or 5 hundred bucks for a "4k" ring.

    I've always start with a crazy stupid offer at pawn shops. Usually works. If not, most of the time we meet in the middle. So i get a deal and they move merchandise. Win/win.

    I noticed that you did`nt mention that Pawn Sops make TONS of money from defaulted pawns. they Prey on people that are in hard times and stuck in a bind. Pawn shops are in the slot along with Lawyers , Loan agents, Real estate agents and used car sales.
