Man everyone who was a SR fan thought when he was taken away they missed the end of his career, but what nobody realized they would never get the chance to see was who he really was. After all racers are finished racing they lighten up and let the real stories out. I always think of all the stories that Sr took with him that we’ll never get to hear. I think it’s great that jr has all these guys to tell him the stories of who his dad really was and he gives us the opportunity to hear them too.

I believe your interview with Gary Nelson is by far the best one yet! Gary is truly a brilliant man far beyond his 2 days of high school. His strongest point is exactly what he said it was in being able to gather the right people around him, and find the best solutions, then implement them successfully... Whether it was tire wear and traction with his engineer, or gear ratios with his driver and engine builder, or driver safety, he pulled the right people in and knew where to go to find help... He's a straight shooter 100% honest guy!
I love how Dale get these guys who are totally unknown to me and somehow I end up listening too and enjoying the whole conversation. The people behind the scenes really made the sport what it was/is.
I am a die hard nascar fan since I was 7 or 8 years old. I'm 73 years old now. I remember most of the things he has discussed here. I watched it happen in real time for the most part. I remember the days when the booth crew was Benny Parsons, Buddy Baker, and Dr. Jerry Punch. Those days are gone, the sport has changed, the whole atmosphere is different in the racing world. It is a safer sport, it's still entertaining, but it's not nearly as much fun.

This is such a treat being a long time fan getting to hear and re-live the stories. When Mr. Nelson read those 10 names it really hit hard. So many people had minor and major roles in the sport that interwoven together make it so much more than just cars going in circles. Thank you Dale. These just keep getting better and better. ❤

I wasn’t sure at first about this episode. But I have to say Gary was a great guest and had an incredible story. Geeze, I didn't recognize Gary Nelson until he sat down and began talking. He was a great guy and seems to still be a great guy. Always a no BS guy and still is. It takes a lot of guts to talk about all the greats who died during his watch and I hope he doesn't blame himself. As we all know there is more than one person involved. Safety is on everyone.
He is 71 years old now, and most of his visible career was in his thirties and fourties. He and Ray Evernham brought the job of the crew chief to a new and different level from what it had been with engineers and what not. They didn't invent it but their 'creativity' also set new levels.
I can never get enough of these stories. Dale Jr. - Keep bringing these legends on, as they have such great history and stories. For the ones that may be resistant to talking about it, tell them you have an audience that really appreciates what they have to say. Imagine if it could somehow be done that you get folks like Jr Johnson, Bill France Sr & Jr, Neil Bonnett, Smokey, and many others who have passed on, on as well....Like a NASCAR Field of Dreams...
WOW - Gary Nelson. When you talk about great minds in NASCAR history his name is near the top of that list every time. Thank you Jr. for bringing this level history to all of us through your show. The safety improvements in driver cockpits from HANS, and especially seats has filtered down to grass roots racing. I remember seats in sprint cars from the 80s 90s and early 2000s and cringe. We were so far out of the park it's almost embarrassing. Looking at those same seats today we thank God for all of the work put into safety by Gary and his team and down through the entire industry.

I’m 53 and remember sitting on the front porch with my granddaddy listening to races on MRN in the mid to late 70s up until he passed away in 1990. I continued as a major fan until the mid 2000s. I was a Bill Elliott fan until his career winded down then I stayed on as a jr. fan until he retired. I tried to stay a casual fan but the new car and parity ruined it for me. Parity has no place in racing. It should be about fast cars. It doesn’t matter how fast they are if they’re all going the same speed. Anyway…… I loved this interview with Gary Nelson. I lived NASCAR through his career. This brought back so many memories and offered clarity on several things that I didn’t fully understand as it was happening. As a society we really should start celebrating recognizing interviewing documenting the life's of our old timers so much life lived so much happiness hurt lessons learned so much we can take from there lives loved this interview
I thoroughtly enjoyed this interview. I was a total fan of racing in the 80's and 90's when I lived about 20 miles from Martinsville. Like another of your viewers, I watched the whole thing at one time and wasn't ready to quit. Please bring Gary back. Thank you.
I'm a huge fan of these interviews with former drivers and officials. To hear stories from those who were there and participated and/or were witness is nothing short of amazing. Thank you for keeping this going. It is so important to hear these stories and see where the sport came from as it is heading to where it is now and beyond. I grew up in hickory going to the track and later moved to Myrtle Beach in the 80s i miss the old school NASCAR i remember watching JR in the mom and pops car at Myrtle
I hope you bring him back. It’s 2024 we all know, who have followed NASCAR since the 80’s, for me, that was part of the sport. Steve L said it best, when Chase used the wall at Martinsville, there are rules written w his name by it! I raced stock sailboats & when anyone races “stock” everyone tries to “bend” the rules. It’s kinda part of the fun of racing. We never called it “cheating”. It’s not like Lance A who doped. The drivers were not enhancing their driving skills, ppl were trying to get more speed. Totally different & these stories of “bending the rules” are great! Funny, and heart warming, to me. Reminds me of the time when a sport starts out and contestants try to “gives themselves an advantage” 🤷♀️ No one’s coming to take championships away. Or wins. Imho after 2000, let them spill the tea! These stories are great! TY because they come from the history, and you’re the only one documenting it.
I spent the 90’s working in NASCAR and can say without a doubt that Gary was a very nice man and you had to get up awful early in the morning to get something by him. What a great interview!
This history of the sport is what nascar needs to pay more attention to. When companies grow into something larger than life they tend to forget what is was that set them in that direction to grow in the first place. In other words when good values are what build your company you have to remember to keep those same values so that your company continues to be something of value.

For me - spellbinding - start to finish - great work getting this one put together Dale - as a side note (because the entire interview was fascinating) and yes, I personally know it's very old news to many that will NEVER feel old or get old for me, but the loss of your dad changed countless lives way beyond your own family, it's as if the world itself changed that day - for Gary to pass along some of the details of the efforts behind the scenes of all of Nascar losses, especially your dads, was very precious to hear about and gain some understanding about. 🙏

This dude worked with DiGard when Darrell Waltrip drove for them and won a Daytona 500 with Bobby Allison and got Bobby to the 1983 championship. Then he got Geoff Bodine a Daytona 500 win in 1986. He's done TV. He worked with Kyle Petty. And then he went to work for NASCAR. I was wondering when we would ever see an interview with Gary Nelson. Thanks, Dale Jr.

Great interview! Thanks to the safety innovations, there are lots of drivers today taking tremendous hits, walking away, and driving again next week. Those same hits a few years ago would result in driver's missing the next race or worse. Never before have so many drivers been able to eventually retire under their own terms. Thank you Gary Nelson.

What an amazing interview. I loved how you let him figure out how to say what he felt he needed to say, and the way to say it. Your insight into his life was so helpful as well. I didn't have any idea who this guy was but I trusted that you'd bring it to life because it was important to you...and, man, it tied up some neat loose ends from your project last year...so helpful, so fun, and couldn't get enough of it! Great job! My favorite part...he blames himself for everything...he got into a role with NASCAR that he never thought to be in, took it on did the best he could, then the icon was killed...if he wasn't in charge at that time, as humble as he is, could NASCAR say they'd have the track record of no deaths since? Perfect guy in the spot at the time to make it as safe as it is today...hate that it took that, but, as he said, they were headed in that direction, especially after Adam's death. If ya'll get a chance, do five more hours, and have a couple of them be on a fishing boat.

This is one of my favorite interviews you have done. Gary is such a humble, honest guy. I appreciate him respecting the others who have told the same stories from a different perspective and wanting to preserve their integrity with the viewing audience. It was great to hear his story. Awesome interview!!! And he absolutely saved many racers lives, not just in NASCAR, but so many other local race tracks that adopted safety innovations. A huge benefit to the sport for sure. Look forward to the next time he swings by!!!
As a society we really should start celebrating recognizing interviewing documenting the life's of our old timers so much life lived so much happiness hurt lessons learned so much we can take from there lives loved this interview

I thoroughtly enjoyed this interview. I was a total fan of racing in the 80's and 90's when I lived about 20 miles from Martinsville. Like another of your viewers, I watched the whole thing at one time and wasn't ready to quit. Please bring Gary back. Thank you.

I grew up in hickory going to the track and later moved to Myrtle Beach in the 80s i miss the old school NASCAR i remember watching JR in the mom and pops car at Myrtle
Yes, incredible interview. Gary seems like such a genuine, passionate, man who truly loved his jobs & performed them with integrity.
I hope you bring him back. It’s 2024 we all know, who have followed NASCAR since the 80’s, for me, that was part of the sport. Steve L said it best, when Chase used the wall at Martinsville, there are rules written w his name by it! I raced stock sailboats & when anyone races “stock” everyone tries to “bend” the rules. It’s kinda part of the fun of racing. We never called it “cheating”. It’s not like Lance A who doped. The drivers were not enhancing their driving skills, ppl were trying to get more speed. Totally different & these stories of “bending the rules” are great! Funny, and heart warming, to me. Reminds me of the time when a sport starts out and contestants try to “gives themselves an advantage” 🤷♀️ No one’s coming to take championships away. Or wins. Imho after 2000, let them spill the tea! These stories are great! TY because they come from the history, and you’re the only one documenting it.

I spent the 90’s working in NASCAR and can say without a doubt that Gary was a very nice man and you had to get up awful early in the morning to get something by him. What a great interview!

This history of the sport is what nascar needs to pay more attention to. When companies grow into something larger than life they tend to forget what is was that set them in that direction to grow in the first place. In other words when good values are what build your company you have to remember to keep those same values so that your company continues to be something of value.
Nice one! It's aggravating to me, though, that two people aren't in HOF already. Jerry Punch and Gary Nelson. Both are very deserving

For me - spellbinding - start to finish - great work getting this one put together Dale - as a side note (because the entire interview was fascinating) and yes, I personally know it's very old news to many that will NEVER feel old or get old for me, but the loss of your dad changed countless lives way beyond your own family, it's as if the world itself changed that day - for Gary to pass along some of the details of the efforts behind the scenes of all of Nascar losses, especially your dads, was very precious to hear about and gain some understanding about. 🙏

This dude worked with DiGard when Darrell Waltrip drove for them and won a Daytona 500 with Bobby Allison and got Bobby to the 1983 championship. Then he got Geoff Bodine a Daytona 500 win in 1986. He's done TV. He worked with Kyle Petty. And then he went to work for NASCAR. I was wondering when we would ever see an interview with Gary Nelson. Thanks, Dale Jr.

Great interview! Thanks to the safety innovations, there are lots of drivers today taking tremendous hits, walking away, and driving again next week. Those same hits a few years ago would result in driver's missing the next race or worse. Never before have so many drivers been able to eventually retire under their own terms. Thank you Gary Nelson.

Outstanding interview with Gary Nelson. I was at Rockingham that day Kyle dominated the entire field. Wow, that was a great car. Can't wait for Gary to come back on and he and Dale talk about what Gary's done since he left NASCAR.

By far my most favorite interview of all time. I was involved with NASCAR during the same years and he described it exactly how it was.
I truly appreciate Jr's efforts to record these rich histories and often forgotten stories. I had only ever known Gary Nelson as a NASCAR official. What an awesome career!
What an amazing interview. I loved how you let him figure out how to say what he felt he needed to say, and the way to say it. Your insight into his life was so helpful as well. I didn't have any idea who this guy was but I trusted that you'd bring it to life because it was important to you...and, man, it tied up some neat loose ends from your project last year...so helpful, so fun, and couldn't get enough of it! Great job! My favorite part...he blames himself for everything...he got into a role with NASCAR that he never thought to be in, took it on did the best he could, then the icon was killed...if he wasn't in charge at that time, as humble as he is, could NASCAR say they'd have the track record of no deaths since? Perfect guy in the spot at the time to make it as safe as it is today...hate that it took that, but, as he said, they were headed in that direction, especially after Adam's death. If ya'll get a chance, do five more hours, and have a couple of them be on a fishing boat.
