- Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with NASCAR royalty as Richard and Kyle Petty join this week’s episode of the Download. As part of the Petty Family’s 75 Years in Racing anniversary celebration, the guys wanted to stop by the studio and share some chapters of their legacy in the sport.
The conversation starts with family patriarch Lee, who was entered in the very first NASCAR Cup race held on June 19th, 1949. The family operation steadily grew through the 1950s, with Lee amassing scores of victories along with three championships and Richard joining the driving ranks in 1958. All of this came to a screeching halt though as a result of Lee’s harrowing crash at Daytona in 1961, which left Petty Enterprises with virtually nothing.
The chat also covers what era of stock cars Richard and Kyle liked driving the most, and what it was like having Earnhardt family patriarch Ralph race for the team in 1957. The guys bring up one of Richard’s early run-ins with Dale Earnhardt Sr. at Martinsville in 1980, where the King had to give a young Intimidator a stern talking to.
Listeners get some insight into what they can find at the Petty Museum and how the family held on to decades' worth of “junk” because of the historic and sentimental value tied to it. They also discuss Kyle’s upbringing as a child, him working at the shop and his entry into racing. He explains that his relationship with Richard has come full-circle from the time he was young, and now they are closer than ever.

Its amazing how The King looks like he stopped aging in 1990.
Hes gotten less grey lol cmon king, if youre gonna dye it, you gotta go petty blue 🤣
I thought the same thing. He looks amazing
just for men
Adrenochrome
He looks like, sounds, and acts like he is on his last leg....
Dale Jr and his podcasts are so important and essential to maintaining the right balance between NASCAR's historic roots and history and the state of the series in 2024. There is no one who does so with the same level of authority as he nor is there anyone who can speak to all generations of NASCAR fans the way he does.
You can say that again!
AMEN
Yes!👏👏👏
Yes
O definitely
I am going to write something very unpopular. Dale Sr had a huge impact on the sport of NASCAR. There is no doubting what all he has done. A legend! Dale Jr is even going to have a bigger impact with what he does as a media presence and historian and ambassador for the sport of NASCAR. What Dale Jr is doing is special and this cannot be done by just anyone. This is the talent of Dale Jr.
I totally agree with you. He's the bridge in the gap between old school racing and what's going on today. He's very nostalgic and cares about the past but also the future of the sport.
Richard Petty, Kyle Petty and Dale Jr.. The three greatest Historians that sport of NASCAR has. I think the world of all 3. What a wonderful way to spend the evening. Thank You!!
It's a godsend that Richard is still so mentally sharp at 86, bc he's been in the sport to some capacity since day 1
Who else Loves Dale Earnhardt Jr’s Dirty Mo Media?
I do, I do!
Everybody who loves bird dogs. 😆😆😆
@@travisstoneking4049t11gt. Ttt,545pm I is a 65 5🎉
ME!!! I'VE BEEN A FAN SINCE WATCHING DALE JR'S GRANDDADDY RALPH RACE IN THE THE MID 50'S FORWARD AT THE OLD COLUMBIA SPEEDWAY IN CAYCE SOUTH CAROLINA 💞🤗💞🙏🙏🙏🙏🏁🏆🏁
Yes!
Can you frikken imagine Dale jr and the king sitting in living room watching classic races????? I would pay good money to be there. Amazing
Congratulations on 75 years of Greatness 🎉
Yep!
I met Richard Petty at a charity appearance at my local Food City this last year and I have to tell you, he still looks cooler than cool walking into a room. So stylish. He has such a cool relaxed vibe. He was so polite and approachable.
Yes, yes he does!
I met him when I was a kid in the early 90's at a Food City family race night. I grew up in Bristol TN and back then, when the race came to town those 2 times per year, it was a big deal. They would shut down State street and have the cup cars lined up for the crowd to see, the drivers near his respective car for meet and greet.
My mother had a shirt signed by him and she still has that shirt.
This is probably the best racing podcast I’ve ever watched, having these three guys at one table is something that may never be matched
Amen to that!
This is one of those special race videos that's going to be around and watched long after I'm dead.
This is great. Petty fan since '74 10 years old when I first discovered NASCAR. The one with John Force is hilarious.
This one is for sure long overdue. Wish Pearson was still living so we could see him and Richard together on a show. I lost interest in nascar years ago, but love the old races and drivers from before the modern era. Dale your best shows are always bringing the old timers on.
God bless the Petty & Earnhardt families and keep up the good work Jr
I was thinking the same thing. Missing David.
lol the cowardly “gawd bless “ comment is hilarious although religion runs wild in the deep south
What most people can not comprehend , these Nascar teams traveled to tracks from coast to coast . This was well before the interstate highway system was completed as we know it today . Alot of that happened with a TOW BAR and a station wagon untill the 60s . After that it was a single axle ramp truck . One car and one team . Hours and hours of preperation and invention . Thru all of this Richard Petty became a household name , a great American hero . Its a blessing to hear Richard and Kyle recount those days . The 1979 Daytona 500 had a real rookie class including DaleEarnhart , TerryLabonte , HarryGant , Geoff Bodine , Joe Millikan , Gary Balough , Butch Mock and Paul.Fess . Thanks to the Dale Junior Download .
Kyle, PLEASE invite Dale Jr over to watch nascar classics with your dad in level cross and sneak a little video of them geeking out together. It would be the most heartwarming thing ever
I have always been a Richard Petty fan. Growing up in Denton NC in the 70’s everything was Richard Petty. I would listen to the races on the radio back then with my family. All my uncles were Richard Petty fan. We still pull for the 43. Thanks for all the memories King Richard.
It's amazing that Richard Petty still remembers every aspect for every race he was ever in.
Dale is like a small child in a sweetshop when the Pettys start talking about all their junk. His eyes just light up lol. This episode, for a newer NASCAR fan (two years now, and English) was truly amazing. We are the same age, and I understand that nostalgic feeling when you hear about something you love. (For me it is history, just like these guys).
Absolutely one of the best downloads ever. I began watching racing in the early 70's and Richard Petty was my driver. As time went by, Kyle began my driver, and now I enjoy hearing all of the history.
Can you imagine how cool it would be if they watched those old races together but filmed it Mystery Science Theater style! I would pay to watch and listen to that.
It's awesome to see the king and his son on the Dale Jr podcast
That story Kyle told about he and A.J. Foyt is absolute gold. It's from 1983 1st Twin 125. "So you got that from your dad?" "Yeah." "Okay.''
"YaknowImean?"
Just love what you do Dale jr you’re awesome for the sport
Congratulations to The Pettys 75yrd
The first time I met Richard Petty was at Pocono in 1986. It was on Saturday, during practice, as I recall. This was definitely toward the end of the "good old days". I had a hot pit pass, but no press credentials. I had two 35 mm cameras around my neck, so I looked like "the press", and no one ever challenged me or questioned me being ON pit road with the King. Yes, on pit road. Richard was sitting on the very end of the pit road wall, with his legs stretched out and he was talking to a crewmember. I waited patiently and all the sudden, I looked over and Richard looked up at me with his big smile. This was the only time in my life that I was STARSTRUCK. My hands were shaking as I handed him my program and a pen for an autograph and asked him, wou, would you, ppplease? It seemed like it took him 5 minutes to sign that beautiful piece of artwork and I'll never forget that day. He handed me back the pen and and program, I shook his hand and said thank you very much. He was warm and engaging and I was a nervous wreck. Such a cool experience.
There is an idea for Dirty Mo series or show! Watch a NASCAR classic race with The King and let him do the play by play! Pick his brain on what they were thinking back then! We are only here for a little while, so get this on film now!
Omg...Yes!
That's a great idea!
Absolutely YES, sign me up.
This was amazing. An Earnhardt and The Pettys sitting around chatting for an hour and a half? How could it get any better?!?
As a fan since 1977 and an active member of Nascar since 1987, this interview is simply nothing short of awesome!!! Loved it!!!!
King Richard in the house!
I Really don't have the words to express how Immeasurably Cool this video is. All I can think of to say is "Thank You" to Richard, Kyle, AND Dale Jr. This episode is an instant classic(!!!) ... Thanks, Guys(!!!) 🙂.
This was THE BEST EPISODE EVER! Richards memory is amazing! I could listen to Richard tell stories everyday! Kyles stories and his input on his part in Dads stories are so fascinating to hear. Richard Petty is the GOAT ! Awesome episode!
Richard and Kyle were on separately in 2019 and 2020 and told all the same stories then.
This was so awesome to listen to! It is incredible to hear how sharp the King's memory is at 86 years old. Remembering so many small details as Kyle tells a story. Thoroughly enjoyed this on my drive tonight. Great job Jr!
Great interview Dale Jr! Growing up, I was a Richard Petty fan, and when Kyle started racing, I’m about his age, I always wanted a chance to race against him…and see if I could beat him, because he was Richard’s son…glad they are doing these tours and celebrating 75 years of Petty Enterprises, and NASCAR!
Love seeing the King and Kyle on the show sharing old stories!!
This needs to be a series of episodes. I was smiling the whole time just running through my memories growing up watching these three. 1hr and 30 mins is not long enough.
I truly appreciate Dale Jr asking about the father -son relationship for Kyle and The King. Dale's ability to inquire about feelings regardless. And to hear Kyle explain the "full circle" of being the son to not being a son to back to being the son to his daddy. I learned a lot about the Petty Enterprise and I am thankful that I got to see it on Dale's podcast. Thank you.
Side note: back in the late '90's I got to experience The Richard Petty Driving Experience on the former Cloverleaf Horse Track (Greyhound Track) which eventually became a NASCAR racetrack in Fountain, Colorado; I grew up in Security/ Widefield!!
Kyle should be on the show on his own, his stories are great and I could listen all day, but I feel he didn't really give his dad much chance to talk!
I never get tired of listening to the king and I love watching his old races the man is incredible long live the king!
“So you got that from your dad? Oh, OK”. That quote is worth watching the whole video.
Completely wonderful show. Everyone is so open and relaxed. Kyle was at a little dinner in St Henry, Oh as the headliner to talk about his racing life and he was spectacular. Dale's show showed so much more about all the Pettys. One of your best!!
To say that this was Awesome is to only begin to talk about my value for this time.
I have been a fan of NASCAR for as long as I can remember, since 1969 at least. I can still remember walking in front of a bank of televisions in the department store in Lincoln Nebraska. Seeing those cars going around that track so fast.
The Petty family have been a fixture in NASCAR, and it wouldn't be the same without them.
Thank you for doing this with them and for us.
Thanks for preserving the history of NASCAR for all of us. This was an priceless freeze frame for NASCAR fans. Those great racing names like Buddy Arrington and Joe Milliken and Jabe Thomas and Wendell Scott and Dave Marcus would likely be forgotten without the great service of Dale Jr.
Dale Jr., YOU are breaking the internet with this one!!!!
Probably my favorite podcast thus far. Hoping to meet them on the Victory Junction Tour. Thank you, Junior, for your interest in the history of NASCAR.
I love how they tested the cars...drive over the county line on the road and see if everything works. This brings back great memories of my childhood with Dad testing the same way on the Hwy in front of the shop/house. Love it....
I've been a Richard Petty fan my whole life and always heard about his autograph marathons, but until you see him do it you can't imagine what it's like. The first time I met him was in 2009 (Richard would have been 72 at that time) at the Richard Petty Fan Club convention. They say don't meet your heroes and I wasn't sure what to expect. At that convention my wife and I stood in line for autographs for over 5 hours and were nowhere near the back of the line. He sat under a tend on a barstool and signed every single autograph. Not only that, but he treated every single person like they were his best friend as much as was possible while keeping the line moving. He did actually take a a little more time with me because I had a photo of him and Pete Hamilton to sign. How I got the photo is a story of its own. He took a few minutes to tell us and everyone close enough to hear about how much Pete had meant to them back. Back then the Museum wasn't at the race shop, it was in Randleman. He would finish at the convention, then go to the Museum and sign for hours longer. A truly amazing man that understands more than anyone that the fans are what make the cars go around the track. Long live The King!
We need more King,Jr and Kyle !!!!!
Agreed
I think Adam would of been a hell of a racer. Gone to soon.
Yeah I agree. Who knows how it would have played out but Adam was good and even if he wasn’t a great he was a nice kid that loved the sport and it would have been nice to have him around. Same with Ricky hendrick
Man when Kyle mentioned him and Dale not being able to fill that hole just about jerked a tear out of me. Awesome family! Great show!
You can tell when Jr asked the question if they’re closer now in the past 40 years, that hit home with him knowing that would’ve most likely been the same scenario with his dad now.
Fantastic interview, loved hearing all those old stories. Did have to chuckle when you were talking about Kyle riding around Daytona with Richard, no belts, just a different time. When Dale mentioned riding in backseat of his moms car I had memories from my childhood riding in the back window of my parents car. Those old cars had huge flat deck behind rear seat. Just watching out the rear window. How things change. lol
Listening to The King is always a treat, and having KP there is nice too, because he can add to the stuff, but at the same time, he does kinda talk over sometimes.
On a side note, it drives me nuts that the 42 and 43 don't officially run under the Petty name anymore
Kyle is a virtual encyclopedia of knowledge. Sooooooo impressive 👏
You could dang sure have them on again soon.
This is awesome. Hearing the King talk about doing autographs until everybody left made me remember being at the Chicago World of Wheels waiting in line for 3 hours to get an autograph from Senior. We were getting close, but the session was ending. I got disappointed thinking I wouldn't get to meet my hero. He stayed longer than expected and I got to get his autograph. Unfortunately, I was so nervous I couldn't even speak. It's still one of my prized possessions and memories.
I love your interviews with the NASCAR historical figures! Please bring Richard and Kyle back this year for another show!
Richard is still sharp as a tack. Kyle is always going to be Kyle. This family has been through so much and they still shine. Much respect 💯❤️🙏
Dang, man - I’ve appreciated so much in your show, but this right here is maybe my favorite. Of course, Richard is a literal national treasure, but I super hope you get Kyle back in more - he’s got a perspective that is fascinating and honest and has lived a life as close to Dale Jr.’s as any, really, having this icon of a father and grandfather precede him in racing. Just amazing and touching to see the three of y’all together talking. By the way, I don’t think I could possibly be more proud or excited if I was invited by Kyle Petty to come watch old NASCAR races with the King at his place. Please, please take him up on it!
One of, if not the best Dale Jr. download, I've personally set thru. Thanks a bunch, guys. A true story of cats in the cradle by Cat Stevens, only taken full circle with the last verse. Great to see Richard looking so good too.
I can watch/listen to all these guys every day.
Just feel
So blessed to have Richard and Kyle still in the sport. To hear these stories. Dale you’re doing great things! I appreciate these stories and people you have on!
There will never be another Richard Petty. The drivers of today and the future need to look back at that era of drivers and learn how to be a racer in NASCAR. Great podcast.
I simply love just HOW MUCH PASSION these three distinguished gentlemen talk about Nascar.
I love what you do with this podcast Jr, and I'd love to see you with Kyle Petty and Kevin Harvick as you co-hosts
I looked up to Richard Petty as a driver growing up in the late 60s and 70s. It's really great to see him now and get his perspective on the sport, family, and his life. He reminds me of my ex-father in law, another good man with a lot of wisdom and experience. We all need people like them in our lives.
Kyle was always a favorite, about my age and living a life that my friends and I were inspired by. It didn't matter who my favorite driver was, I always rooted for Kyle when he was up front
Really glad you had them on. Thanks
This is gold.
Would like to hear Ned & Dale Jarrett together if possible after watching this episode. Even hearing stories from Glenn Jarrett would be cool. Also would like to hear from Larry Pearson and or his brothers. Love the content!
Ned and Dale were on Kyle's podcast a few years ago.And the Scene Vault had an interview of Larry Pearson a few months ago. Both should still be on CZcams.
I could listen to hours and hours of these guys talking about their history in and around NASCAR. Great times. Don't make this the last time you talk with them.
I could sit and listen to Richard and Kyle all day long.
Thank you Dale. When I started following NASCAR I followed the King, then the Petty family. Back when cars were iconic, you knew the driver by number but more importantly by paint scheme. It’s a shame Adam didn’t live long enough to carry on the family name. Thank you for this interview. It brought back lots of memories, especially number 200 for the King and his good bye lap at Atlanta. I had the pleasure of meeting the king and Kyle at Thompson speedway when some of the cup drivers would come up north every summer after the Fire Cracker 400. The year I met Richard he wasn’t cleared to race due to an accident at the 400 with Tim Richmond and Tim raced the car for Richard at Thompson.
Thank you jr...for have the Pettys on your show...I'm 59 and can remember at Martinsville been going there since I was old enough to walk...loved this show!!!!!
This was good to watch. My stepdad grew up with Kyle playing ball with him. The Petty family are great people. Hope yall get a nascar classic with The King doing the play by play it would be amazing to watch and hear from his point.
WOW what a great interview! Richard is just as sharp as ever! Still remembers everything! Thanks for a wonderful episode!
Feels like I'm sitting around the kitchen table, drinking coffee talking crap with a bunch of friends. Huge thanks to Kyle for making it happen. The only time in my life I was "star struck" was seeing Richard Petty in the garage at I think Atlanta we stood side by side under an overhand to get out of a rain shower. It was like seeing royalty. So great to see how well he's doing.
Makes my heart feel good listening to the podcast today.
Of all the people on this earth I have lived and admired, none could even hold a candle to King Richard. None. There is no equal. My earliest memories of The King were 5 yrs ol c, with an STP shirt on, peed my pants, strumming a guitar. I used to cry when he DIDNT win. I always wanted to own a Charger like he ran. I always wanted a hat like his. I cried when he retired. Richard was my first boyhood hero, and in every way he will always be that hero. Great podcast !!! I've listened to the whole thing 3 times so far.
BIRD DAWGS gets me every time 😂
What is a BIRD DAWG? Lol im a yankee ive never heard of one. Is it like a turkey hot dog or something totally different?
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657i was guessing it's a chicken meat corn dog, but have no idea if that's right
@@BlackSmokeDMax maybe a hot dog wrapped in chicken skin and deep fried 🤷♂️ who knows lol
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657 hah, yep, coyote see that too
Dale needs to spend a day at the shop in Level Cross. He loves NASCAR history and would no doubt enjoy it immensely. Particularly since his grandfather had been there.
Firstly, Richard still looks and sounds incredible. Crazy how well he's doing in spite of all his body went through for so long ..exhausted, exhaust fumes...etc...kyle..so grounded. I'd love to ride the motorcycle ride with him someday. Lastly, I was a big kenny Irwin fan...I rooted for the underdog usually. That 42 bellsouth team was going to get good...and i was really, REALLY looking forward ro Adam as a cup driver...but I'll never truly comprehend the events in spring of 2000...Adam becomes the 1st 4th gen driver..days later Lee ( driver of the 42 petty car) passes. Adam passing in a terrible wreck in turn 3 at NH...then kenny loses his life weeks later in that same turn as Adam, driving the 42 car. Reminiscent of Neil and Dale Sr also passing in the same area of the same track..being best friends. Anyway, I hope I get to ride with kyle and the charity ride someday. That was such a great conversation. Thanks Dale, kyle, and the King.
The King just smiles a huge smile the whole time. Million door smile. He is amazing!
Junior, this was way too short. I could listen to them talk for hours. Love those old stories. Great show. Keep em comin
Man that was one awesome interview.
I can't thank you enough Junior.
I'm the same age as Kyle growing up in Northern Virginia and watching Pops Petty and your grandfather drive at the Old Dominion racetrack in Manassas as a kid on Saturday nights I was fortunate enough to see the best drive there back then.
Grew up a huge Richard fan and then didn't watch to many races until I seen your dad wiping the oil off his windshield at Richmond and I was "who the hell is that?.... that's one driving sob right there!".... then from then on I went to 8 races a year and would get to the tracks on Thursday just as soon as the race teams started rolling in....
Got to see your dad win a ton of races and better yet championship trophies🏆
I've always dug Kyle and was a big of fan of his as Pops Petty and senior.
I love you guys and thanks for sharing your memories with us ❤️
I have hundreds of pictures from back, then junior (photography hobby) and ones of him wiping that windshield off steering with his foot and tons more from Rockingham, Martinsville, Dover and Richmond if you're interested in having them....just hit me back.
Huge Skins fan too and been collecting that Skins "junk" too since the 60s so let me know when you're up this way to see a game we can meet up....
Dale Jr best show love the King and Kyle ❤️ congratulations on 75 year's.
Great, great interview. Long time Petty fan; heard a ton of stuff I'd never heard before. Well done Jr. Thanks.
You could have them once a week and I would watch each one and still want more. I grew up a Richard fan and could listen to the three of you trade stories for days on end. Great show!!!
Terry Labonte was in that Rookie Class.
Loved the show! Great to hear Kyle say he and his dad Richard are closer now than ever. Keep up the good work.
I’m sure it’s been suggested but please live stream when Dale goes to Richard’s to watch classic NASCAR races. I would pay good money to hear and watch that. It would be awesome to hear the “behind the scenes” of races from the drivers in that race. Thanks
I met Richard and Kyle together at an auto trade show in Toronto in 1980, so The King was one year past his last championship and Kyle was still a kid at 20 - albeit already married with Adam just a newborn and only about eight months younger than me. First class men with signatures like the rigging on a sail boat.
Dale, thank you for having Richard and Kyle on. I've been a racing fan damn near all of my 51 years of living . Like you, I have a passion for the history of this sport. You do a stand up job of bringing that history to the rest of us! Like Kyle and Richard, you have been around for so much of your life. I love that rather unique characteristic you all have. Richard was my driver from a young age, back when he was running those Dodge Chargers until he retired.
I, like you, Richard, and Kyle enjoy the NASCAR racing classics too. Especially the ones from the 70's
Best podcast to date. Could watch a week's worth of these three guys together.
❤❤love them boys 👍😎🙏
👍🤠 Great show. You should get them in again soon. . . Bring them in to watch an old race in the studio with Dale and The Kings doing commentary so we all can enjoy that. That would be awesome.
I loved this. Didn't want it to end.
Thank you Dale for having the Petty's on your podcast. Love the family dynamic of Richard and Kyle. Love your show!!!
Love to listen to any of the older drivers --they are amazing
Id imagine that if lee didnt survive that crash through the wall at daytona, seeing replays of it would bring up much different memories, likely much sadder ones
Grew up In Kannapolis.. I remember the King being at the old Curb Motorsport shop next to the oak Ave. food lion. My Grandfater stopped in & Mr. Petty talked with me & my cousin and also signed autographs for us. Thank you sir… I will never forget that
Easily one of the most enjoyable Downloads I've watched, and they are all good. It's incredible to listen to Richard at 86 years of age be as sharp and clear with his story telling and his day to day. Could listen to him and Kyle share stories together all day. Two generations of great NASCAR stories.
Maybe the best interview I’ve ever saw. Been a Petty fan since early 60s. My daddy was a Lee fan too. Love the history
Give kyle petty a podcast
This absolutely is one of the finest podcasts in podcast history!!! Watch ALL the Dirty Mo Content.
Just love listening to the history . I have no connection to NASCAR nor was I fan growing up however, my daddy and his brothers liked racing. We grew up hearing all of the iconic, now legendary names!!! What an awesome job you did with this pod cast. Thank you!
"Brang the fucking fire extinguisher" - Richard Petty
“That was the whole deal” -Richard Petty, probably 😂😂😂
Richard didn’t use the f word, he was raised better than that.
Our family and friends started going to Nascar Races in 1975. Went to 5-7 races a year. Petty, Pierson, Baker, Yarborough, Allison's, Parsons and more were our first drivers to watch. Kept going until early 90's.
