  • Janet Evans talked with the media at the USA Swimming nationals a day after Katie Ledecky became the first person since Evans to own the world records in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyles. She also discussed her career trajectory and how she hopes Ledecky will avoid some of the same pitfalls that Evans experienced as a teenage star.

Janet is terrific! She was inspirational in1988 and continues to be now. Thank you for sharing your experiences!!

Every chance I get to say how nice she was I will take it. She was a sweetheart. I was at meets with her when she was on top and at least publicly, she always smiled, said hi, etc. I remember her for being nice to me (and I wasnt shit in the pool next to her, I wasnt even on her team) even more than her swimming. Much love and respect to Janet Evans.

Ledecky is so dominate. Her WR's will stand for a very long time. When you shave the amount of time off the previous WR's as Ledecky has...that's hard to beat. Janet Evans was a unbelievable swimmer & is a great person, but Ledecky appears to be the most dominate women's swimmer ever.

      Dominant (adjective), not dominate (verb).

Janet is 5'5" in height and about 120lbs. Katie is 5'11" and 155. It took Addington and Ledecky 25 years to break Janet's records.

And Addlington, a great competitor & worthy champion, did it with "The Suit", which was perfectly legal at the time. Believe Katie was first to better Janet's record under the same conditions... which begs the question:
What would Evans record time have been wearing "The Suit"????????????

even if Katie didn't have "the suit", she still has more technology than Janet did. I bet Janet would have been unstoppable with all these resources today.

Its no wonder this woman won so many WR's. She is hyperactive even into her 40's as evidenced by this film!

In perspective what Janet did was phenomenal at that time. Katie is a physical freak a virtual machine. Just wind her up and let her go.
If the media and hype don't get her she will dominate the 200, 400 800 and the 1500. She is already better than Franklin and she is only going to get better.

Love Janet Evans! She best the East Germans in 88 when they were drug fueled cheats. Janet does not fit the physical mold of a swimmer. She is relatively short and thin. The East Germans were tall, heavy, and VERY muscular. Janet had an unusual stroke and won! Go Janet!

I would rather compare Ledecky to secretariat in the belmont, thats how dominant she is in the free style.

She looks exactly the same as she did in Atlanta in 1996, she has not aged one minute. Perfect genetic specimen, which is why she was able to beat the world, perfect genes are (so far) better than (illegal) biochemical enhancements. Love you mighty mite! :)

  • @Sargebri
    @Sargebri Před 8 lety +9

To me there is no comparison. While Janet was great, she only set one world record in Olympic competition and her margins of victory were not as overwhelming as Katie. However, Janet came along at the right time when we were competing against those dirty, roided up East Germans and provided the bright spot for a rather underwhelming performance by the US women in 88. Katie, on the other hand, is the most dominant swimmer of her era and we got a glimpse of that in London and after that she was improving every year.

I'm a german rowing champion, but I watched all her olympic victories! Janet Evans looks now more better and sexy, than in 1988! ;-)

Katie does not feel as much pressure because she focuses on racing time goals, its the clock she is competing with. The clock is fixed, she knows if she is staying with it. And her time goals are beyond what her competitors are doing.

Katie is the GOAT but "The Mighty Mite" set the standard for distance swimming. Ladecky just upgaded the standards.

The greatest female swimmer ever was Shane Gould, who held all the world records for 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 freestyle simultaneously in 1972. Ledecky has never done that and never will.
