    It may be better to run no bass knob at competitions, but for us with daily drivers, it's priceless to be able to kill the bass when u see a cop vs having to hurry amd low it down or hit the mute button.

    The Bass knob is essentially just a potentiometer (variable resistor) which the amp circuitry uses to make comparisons to determine volume level in relation to the set gain of the amplifier. Since all wires have resistance, it's impossible to remove the resistance value of the long wires for the bass remote (there's a voltage drop between the amp and the knob which you can measure with a multimeter). You could also verify this by measuring the resistance value at the end of the cable with the knob both fully up and down. I would recommend anyone removing their bass knob to ensure they recalibrate their amp gain as this additional signal could be introduce clipping which can harm the subwoofer voice coils.

  • @sumdood2035
    @sumdood2035 Před rokem +8

    MAX on the bass knob vs base gain on the amp may not be the same. The bass knob is a potentiometer. It may not be calibrated to be exactly matched at 100%, especially if it's not the same one that came with the amp. That is why you should (and probably did) set your gains with the knob installed and at max.

I have concluded that I'm just going to control sub level with head unit to get the most out of the system. There simple WILL be resistance in you signal using a bass knob, no way around rather than to delete it... Sucks because i wanted the fancy bass knob and such but it is what it is

  • @ow_will
    @ow_will Před 4 lety +18

    Maybe because the bass knob adjusts the bass (well never!!) if you have it at minimum and un-plug it then the bass will jump up to normal so that sudden jump (transient) could cause damage but if you have the bass set to where it would be without the bass knob and un-plug it then the bass will stay where it is and no jump so no damage.
    Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong or if you know or have any other explanations, thanks.

    The set-point of the gain equals the max power that will be output to the sub. Installing a potentiometer allows the gain to be decreased from the set-point. You wont get 100% because they use a resistor that has 1% tollerance

    • @sumdood2035

      When you disconnect the knob, the system reverts to the physical gain level set at the amp. Or if you are talking about the knob being turned to the left, that knob is MAX all the way to the left, rather than right.

Is the amp now has to send a signal to the bass knob it will make zero difference at actual listening volumes but that is the reason you are seeing that tiny difference is db at such a low volume the amp just had to bypass going directly to outputs to being split off slightly changing the amount of signal it was sending not having it plugged in.

      @@jameslewis974 The 1.5v difference from 5v head unit inputs compared to the older 3.5v inputs is huge. Percieved listening, certified rated, and measured. As long as you use high quality OFC RCA's. Too many people never realize their systems true potential by cheaping out on the wiring or simple wiring mistakes that are easy to make. Like running DVC subs unbridged as SVC's. The best bass knob I ever had was through an Acoustic Crossover in line with an Audio Control EQL (the 1st year Audio Control showed up on the block). When I used pick up HCCA's from a back door with no outside handle. We called Orion will-call; I picked up my 2100 from there too. Oh the good ole days. The techs come a long, long way since then. These kids don't know how good they have not having to worry about rebuilt alternators, multiple batteries, isolators, relays, breakers, etc. The wiring is still a 100% must!

      Sometimes cutting gain back and adding a couple db bass boost on a specific frequency on persay 4th and 6th order boxes, generally you do wanna set your amp gain acordingly after boost, you can actually gain on the meeter by doing so if your searching for db, you can use a dsp and use it like you would your normal radio but in this case you'd have more ajustibility on the low end and top end extension this also would allow you to set crossovers and slopes Wich I have always suggested for said order alignment boxes, because it really brings them to life the point in having high order bandpass boxes is to add another "afc" amplified frequency curve Wich helps said driver with amplification of output, by helping the driver load, you can run high order alignments with the shit mentioned but the overall performance is not as should be,

      Bad connector on the bass knob. Return it and get another one. That is a manufacturing issue. My bass knob connecter snaps into the amp but there still is wiggle room at the amp connection. These potentiometer's are made cheaply and even the good ones you lose about a half DB total volume due to wire resistence. They are convenient so I still use mine as source material from radio to MP3, to lossless music I listen to have variable bass volumes and I need to adjust on the fly.
