His chord work is beyond belief-as good as having a keyboardist on board. He’s truly a national treasure, as is his host, Les Paul. Two of America’s finest.
There will never be another Les Paul. Amazing player, innovator and inventor. Looking at his hands in this video, seeing the arthritis, and he still kept playing. He is an unparalleled legend.
Just stumbled across this video. So very cool to see. I was there (I'm the long-haired guy in the white shirt, sitting right at Larry's feet). Fantastic night. I got to hang out with some of my idols that evening, and wouldn't have much cared if I had got run over by the 51st St bus afterwards, 'cos my life was pretty much complete. :) Thx for posting. RIP Les, and Lou Pallo.
Larry is so good. Damn! He can play the most difficult jazz standards. When I first heard of him, he threw me off. I did not realize that he's actually a guitar master. I love his blues playing too. He actually learned a lot from the great late BB KING who took Larry under his wing and taught how to play real blues.
Agreed, Larry; Tommy Emmanuel; Dickey Betts (of Allman Bros), Brian Setzer (Stray Cats); and Steve Howe (of Yes); were to my ear the best jams with Les & his band. Just a handful can play really really well in this format, Larry is among the few.
These guys are both American Treasures. More people should pay attention to stuff like this. We have lost so many great heroes and are producing so few.
Thanks for the link Chris! I used to tape his stuff in the 80s on vhs every time he was on tv. NightFlight and all the other old shows, I still have a ton of video tapes in my garage. Mostly tapes of Les and Mary doing oldies, but sometimes would catch a real gem! Always loved when he would play with Chet. True masters of their craft.
the sad scenario is that if you keep on cutting music programs from many schools whether its public or private schools there won't be ANY heroes left!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been watching these Les Paul Iridium videos for a week straight, and Larry is probably tied with Tommy Emmanuel in my book for how well they jam with Les on stage. Such a sense of fun!
Brilliant Larry Carlton just gets up there and does it non-stop throw any chord at him and he can play guitar solos over the fast thinker experienced professional legend
I recently read an article where they were basically saying that Larry can't play real Jazz, and it might be the reason why he chose to play this "AS JAZZ AS YOU CAN GET" number. Larry is the REAL DEAL. You can't get more REAL JAZZ than this! He proved them to be wrong. He can play anything!
See if the powers that be only had the power to release stuff like this we would never see it Thank God for CZcams and all the masses who post this great stuff we would otherwise miss!!!
A little FYI, his hand stays together, no massive stretching on chords, scale runs , arpeggios, etc. Anybody can do it. It's what's in your head. These are two masters at string logic. Watch and bow and learn.
One of the reasons I dig Carlton so much is that he can go from straight no-bend jazz to stretching the blues without batting an eye...and he often does it in the same tune
I was very fortunate to regularly see Mr. Larry at Donte's in North Hollywood... He, and sometimes Robin Ford, and always with top LA players, would just smoke the joint... every frikkin' time...
Two of the greatest guitarists god could ever send to Earth. How amazing that must have been to sit there and watch that shit go down? Oh, how I wish Les was still alive. Plus, Bonus! Frank Vignola on that Gypsy, acoustic Guitar.
Wonderful. Loved that Blues in C, with all the interplay, plus the introduction of the acoustic, it was slightly reminiscent of Friday Night in San Francisco. What a treat!
I used to go see Les back in that time frame when I visited NYC; I've seen Carlton a few times also. Both of them together? Priceless. Would have loved to see this.
Nicki is Always smiling and Totally Into the music! She is one of the most solid bass players around, and sings like an Angel! Her sister Lisa is a fantastic sax player, lots of talent in these two ladies from Australia.
I'm primarily a keyboard player, who plays some guitar. Larry Carlton always seems to remind me of that. The man is a fretboard poet. What fun this must have been.
But what guitar is Larry playing? It looks like a cross between a 335 and a 355 (Is there such a thing as a 345? -Yes, I just looked it up, but I'm still no clearer...), and even more importantly, what is Frank playing? IWOOT.
@@JJMMWGDuPree His iconic 1969 335. That's the guitar you hear with Steely Dan and so many others. It supposedly created a very unique feel and resonance to that 335 and it's actually been replicated by luthiers for other players. @@shawnmcvey7789 What? "Installed it farther back than normal"? They all have Tune-O-Matic bridges, if installed farther back the intonation would make it untunable! The TRUTH being...it's stock other than the "trapeze": tailpiece was changed to a "stop" style tail, some fret jobs and tuners and nut replaced.
His chord work is beyond belief-as good as having a keyboardist on board. He’s truly a national treasure, as is his host, Les Paul. Two of America’s finest.
No joke, I am crying with gratitude that you preserved these Les Paul videos. Thank you.
I also cry when I see these heroes. I do . no lie. tears of joy
I totally agree! Thank you for posting these!
My favorites that sat in with Les were Steve Howe (Yes) and Dickey Betts (Allman Bros) and of course Larry!
There will never be another Les Paul. Amazing player, innovator and inventor. Looking at his hands in this video, seeing the arthritis, and he still kept playing. He is an unparalleled legend.
Larry Carlton is one of those guitar heroes that is just not only about technique and impress people, his playing is sincere, tasteful & magical!
Retorno Boricua lespaul.org
My favorite blues guitarist.
That first song is the HARD STUFF! Damn! That blew my mind!
frank vignola's solo though, out of this world lol
Larry Carlton show the true feeling of blues song!
NICKY..SUCH A GREAT BASSIST..AND THANK YOU KIT MACLURE, FOR GETTING HER HERE TO THE STATES! your both treasures!

Wow, you were so lucky, what a wonderful experience! Congratulations for having been part of a historic night for electric guitar enthusiasts!
Larry Carlton was my dad´s favorite guitar player, and now is my favorite guitar player too. Amazing !!!!
Not a guitarist but mine are Larry Carlton, Michael Landau and Robben Ford.
Larry Carlton is a Rolls Royce guitarist.
Larry Carlton is MUCH better than that!
Absolutely. The power is adequate. Wayyyyyyyy
and Frank Vignola is a Lamborgini
except his value appreciates over time...as does his playing quality...

Every time I watch Larry, it reminds me of the futility of my playing any more.

"I play guitar."
"I invented the guitar you're playing."
Did les say that to himself or?...
Do you meant "he designed it" because is crafted by Gibson
@@mauripcabezas3578 LP invented the electric guitar.

Chris Lentz, still enjoying the channel tremendously. Thank you sir.
So cool !
Jazz or blues, Larry just plain cooks! One of the better Les Paul and Friends videos, IMHO.
Victor Dresser lespaul.org
Beautiful, just beautiful. I wish I could play like this. His play makes me feel happy.
stupendous! bravo 7.2022
AMAZING!!! LARRY COMPS HIS CHORDS ALMOST AS FAST AS HE SOLO'S! LOLOL!!!
I have the impression sometimes he is just soloing on top of the very cleverly chosen chord progressions stacked over the main one.
Wow! That was Frank Vignola !!!
Gorgeous jazz and blues!
LARRY CARL-TONE~!~ NUMBER ONE ALL AROUND GUITAR PLAYER OF THE CENTURY~!~ FACT~!~
Larry is one of those musicians who is just in a different plane of musical existence. His phrasing is ridiculous.
Chris! God bless you for compiling these amazing bits of history, and of Pure awesomeness! You rock! (Mostly because Les Paul and friends rock)
I know about Larry, but WOW look at that lady bassist. She should have won an award for that spectacular performance!
Les Paul: a gift from the angels
angels don't say g.d. unless they are the nefarious ones.

HMMmmmm Nicki Parrott..Nicki Parrott thats a name I wont forget Please please give here the recognition she deserves
Phenomenal, Thanks Chris !
Very sweet. Kindness . I had a little tear.
Larry and a female basist play "All the things you are" and Blues with so relaxing atmosphere. Very good!
Amazing performance. Thank you for posting this. A gem.
Great analogy, and YES!
When Blues in C starts it makes you want to take up smoking....
Wonderful....just wonderful.....
Love this! Larry swings his ass off. Chorus after Chorus.....fresh ideas and love the tune. All the things you are
Mr 335! Larry is awesome! One of many great players! Lee Ritenour Dean parks Jay Graydon Steve Lukather Dann Huff Mike Landau the list goes on!
Great players and session players who did alot of behind scenes on many famous projects. I hear ya, 🎸🎶
Larry Carlton Lee Ritenour & Lukather is my fav guitar player..
Wonderful guitarist & talented studio musicians..
David Norman Lukather is a guitar god, but he’s not a 335 guy. He has played Ernie Ball Music Man from the beginning.
Yes... but ONLY Larry has the jump on sweetness!!! Tis' true~!~
Love Larry and have most of his stuff...! Terrific Les & Larry & Frank..!!!!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING^^
Thank you Les Paul
Wow the man the legend Mr. Lester Paul himself. First time I've ever seen him. Heard so much about him but never seen him until now.

this was some freaking awesome blues

Larry, Les - we are blessed with music - so few seem to know this. However this piece is abstruse!
Larry Carlton - playing an incredible guitar blusesy - jazz / flavors ; fantastic tone 9n his guitar playing !

Great appreciation for life when there is music it makes everything better
This is great stuff! Love it all. Frank V has some real chops and he is a great instructor on Truefire as well.

Well he has a couple of Grammys.....and sold 10 million records and played the solo on Kid Charlemagne and Third World Man.....amongst others.....
such a delicate touch on the chord changes at 3:00
What a great combo! Larry Carlton from fourplay and les Paul! 2 masters who are unequaled
Awesome!
I love it!
All The Things You Are is the best song ever written. Prove me wrong.
These Les Paul videos are legendary
Finally, someone who can play more than three chords and the pentatonic scale worthy of playing with Les.
Ken, Toronto
Check out the LP SH video
but there's nothin that can beat the blues. LOL
Ken Rowan Truth be told, I get more out of three chords and the pentatonic scale than any of this.lol
That's fine, I get it. Some still read comics books while others read the classics. It's all a matter of taste.

Nothing wrong with playing the blues. Some blues are more sophisticated than others.

great players, real nice people!!!
Wow! Nobody has to tell Larry what to do here. LOL. AMAZING!
