  • In this video I discuss how I see the future of video game distribution and accessibility, with Gamepass and Netflix effectively setting things in motion. We will likely own nothing other than a digital internet game box.
What do you think? With Microsoft making some strange decisions, I could be wrong.

Every day, retro gaming makes more and more sense.
I take comfort in the knowledge that even if the games industry does go fully digital and/or down the subscription route, the retro market will still be physical.
Not just the security of owning a physical copy. But the enjoyment of going to a real place and buying it, with cash. Whether it's a dedicated retro games store, a pawn shop, or a yard sale.

The problem with physical media in the last 2 generation was that by the time the physical media was printed the game was not in a really playable state.
Pretty much every game requires a day one patch in order to start propperly.
I remember when Doom 2016 was ported to Switch and the physical copy contained all the single player elements and the patch was the multiplayer. This made perfect sense. That is how it should be done. But than there is the devil in carnage Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 (2023). This game has a physical edition with just 70MB on the blu ray disc. The full game is around 180GB. I recently listened to a podcast in which the host complained how he tried to install the game and it said download 80GB. These 80GB were just parts of the multiplayer. Than he had to watch a fullscren add for whatever was in the battlepass at the time. Than he could select campaign and the game started to download 50GB. Than you probally think the game started. Wrong. The game told him he needed the second part of the campaign so another 50GB had to be downloaded. Then of course he had to watch another 3 separate adds for multiplayer content before he could start the campaign, which was only 3 hours long and every mission took place on a multiplayer level cutout, was boring and had next to no presentation worh mentioning.
Why can't the game ask me at the start what part I want to download? Why does the physical disk have no playable content at all?
And who thought this garbage was worth full prize?
The problem you mentioned how services like Netflix don't keep shows around and remove them from their library with no intent to ever put them back is scary. The same thing can happen to every gaming service. They can be like "we made all the money we can make with this game we will not renew our license for this". I have 0 faith that companies like EA and Ubisoft will keep track of their stuff. EA stated multiple times that they don't want you to play their old games. Play our new stuff as we don't make money from our old stuff at all.
There are services that offer an actual attempt at game preservation like Antstream Arcade with over 1000 retro games available from the ZX Spectrum al the way to the PS1. And they stated that they make sure if a license expires to renew it if possible. That is a service I can get behind. Stuff like EA play and whatever Ubisoft is offering is pathetic. The selection is pretty much nothing worth an anual fee and you don't get access to the newer stuff they release making it not worth buying. I know the quote from one of the Ubisoft executives has been taken out of context alot. When he was asked what would need to happen to make cloudgaming and gaming subscrition services the norm he awnserd "gamer would need to get comfortable not owning their games. They have gotten used to this with movies and music already." I fully understand what he ment and I find it wrong how people remove this out of context.
My main problem is that every company out there is asking for an anual fee and offers next to no content at all. Why would I pay 4,99 a month for the access to 14 games, when I can just buy 1 or 2 games I actually want?
You can quote me on this. If you think you can justify an anual fee for a subscription you have to offer loads of content with consitant updates and more games added. If you continue to refuse to do this you have to get comfortable with not seeing a single penny from me.
What you said about the internet outage hit home pretty hard for me. I recently played through the first Golden Sun on GBA through my Nintendo Switch Online service. This service is supposed to give me access for retrogames as long as I connect to the internet at least once per week. Turns out this once per week is always friday for me. So when I had an internet outage from friday to sunday I couldn't play Golden Sun at all. This frustrated me. I had decided to play Golden Sun via NSO because I wanted Nintendo to see that people like me are still interested in these 20 year old games. I have the game digitally on my Wii U and that gives me permanent access to game after it's downloaded. This is why physical media is so important to me. I want access to these games as reliable as possible. My current favorite method is to download the rom on an everdrive and playing the game like that. It's getting really difficult to trust these companies.

I think PC ditched physical media quite some time ago. It started with them making cases without drive bays. While you can get external, I think most just found it easier to download. As for steam library share thing, as long as a person isn't playing a game (they can be online) the game share works, example - im online not playing any game but I've got steam open and I've shared my library with you. You can play any of my games (that allow it, not all do) until I launched a game it would boot you out.
I've had quite a number of games on steam that have been removed and never came back to store. I can still play/download said games, same with ps3/ps vita in my case, however I believe there isn't anything stopping them from removing content from your account, it's quite possible and people don't like the idea of that being a possible outcome (and I agree) and also I have bought a few discs (2011) of games and yeah...the disc saved you from needing the internet to download the steam game, other than that it was useless (and outdated).
People will turn to piracy (most) if they start deleting content (I believe months/last year ago Sony did this with TV series or something that people had paid for). But that's another whole can of worms...they leaves open more chances of hackers/virus makers to infect/get more people. I was a bit of a pirate back in my day due to no gaming stores or money and while you could get viruses and such back then, you just used a bit of common sense and you'd be fine. These days I'm out of the game for the most part and I feel lost and more so I've gotten a few nasty things from said download lol and overall its a little bit harder (perhaps because I stopped for years).
I have xbox pass myself for the free games, but I barley touch it...I got it for MS Flight sim 2020 as I wanted to try it but I'm not a plane guy so wasn't interested in buying/pirating it. To some very light degree, these online passes (game wise) is like today's version of "demos" for games that don't have a demo option (which is annoying af). I think if companies started taking away digital but we only had the option for digital games, we'd have the power in the end if everyone worked together and stopped buying digital, play older gen stuff...the studios and such would lose profits. Unless there becomes a law that they cannot remove digital games if purchased, it's the only way I'd see people (most) would feel more comfortable with buying digital. I'm happy for multiple options even if it doesn't effect me. I think there should be both physical and digital.

Ultimately in the end if we are happy with gameplay experiences being the product that we pay for and not the physical tangible thing, Then we will all be happy. What concerns me is the fact that true ownership is becoming a thing of the past. and it’s not just in the video game industry as it seems many different industries are finding ways to sell you something you don’t actually own.
As someone who values physical media, meaning media with the entire product on it, the principles of these current and future products don’t align with my own.

PC but most definitely Microsoft are the main cause regarding gaming.
Og xbox removed memory cards and normalized HDD's (no more control over your save games) and enforced paid online gaming for consoles.
Xbox one enforced ONLINE console DRM. Wich Sony does too now with the PS5 slim. And started the trent with physical media just being download keys instead of containing the full game aaaand game pass.

There's also a precedent the digital/streaming future sets in terms of standards and quality. It happened with Netflix etc, most content there is designed to be consumed once then disposed of. They're not made to stand the test of time. Nothing that has a substance and impact that will be memoried or replicated in generations to come. I think it's already happening in gaming, with these weak modern games, gamepass, mobile gaming... but most ironically in the form of the live service concept, which on the surface suggests 'longevity' but in truth usually means the core game isn't good enough to stand on its own and is on constant life support.
The new standard becomes a 'fast food' industry, where gamers become dependent on the next 5 second fix, to try and fill the gaping hole left from a lack of true quality product. The classics never needed constant updates because they were already endless fun. Good video.

If you watch one of my later videos, I actually explain why I think that is going to be the future 😐

Streaming and subscriptions is inevitable. This was predicted by futurist Kevin Kelly in his book, The Inevitable, back in 2016 👀

Xbox has been wasting their time and money on these mediocre games for the past decade. Clearly they don’t have their hearts in it anymore. I think they should just ditch the game development altogether and just make hardware for more disabled people and open up the Xbox platform so people can do whatever they want with it. It’s like the hardware team is the only one that hasn’t been asleep for the past decade and they’re the only ones who good work consistently enough at Microsoft.
Elite controller is a good idea with the swappable buttons and the back pads, or putting little grips on the back of their controllers for series x so they don’t slip off your hands as much. If they made Xbox into more of a hardware brand then that’d be so much better than this current crappy plan, because at least they’d be doing something useful that they clearly care about and I wouldn’t have any expectations to be let down for bad or mediocre games.

I just wish we had the details of why they shut down the studios they bought. It feels like there are 3 exclusive games to Xbox and they aren’t truely exclusive anymore 🤔
