@@MarietteSparrowthey might’ve cut this specific part, but the actor who played Grantaire in the 2012 movie actually purposefully played the character as being in love with Enjolras, and even posted a cover of a song edited to be about their characters on CZcams.
I've never felt more cheated over the lack of a Grantaire solo in the 2012 movie... can you IMAGINE if we got this too
I think we would have spontaneously combusted if we'd seen Aaron Tveit and George Blagden do this scene. Cause we know George would have poured his heart and soul to make it as gay as possible.
Tom Hooper did straightwashed Cats though, I doubt he’d film the scene to be gay. :( it’s probably gonna be Grantaire platonically interacting with other characters and probably not Enj since they were sitting so far away from each other in the movie scene

I understand what you mean but I’d rather think that no small spark of light is wasted in that time. Just because their revolution didn’t success, doesn’t mean that they didn’t inspire other.
I think it depends on how you see it.
Yes, they were one more life, but they inspired others. They sacrifice inspired other martyrs to die for France and, at the end the revolution had success... just that they weren’t available to see it :,(
No one will remember every single martyr, but people will remember the sacrifice of the people. If every si hoe French would think as Grantaire there wouldn’t be any martyrs and probably France would continued to be oppress for a long time.
They lost, but at the end Freedom and the people won, and inspired lot of countries to fight for the same cause wasn’t that the most important thing?
In “Do you hear the people sing?” Enjorlas don’t talk about he or his friends, he talks about France as a whole. They know that the blood of the martyrs will inspire the people to sing harder. And it did, people never stopped until they get what they wanted. They expected a tomorrow that never came... but they created that tomorrow to other people.
Also, they would be remember by Marius and by us. I don’t know if that makes sense, but still... the “Enjorlas” in the word inspired Víctor Hugo and other writers to write about this, and then to create this musical that inmortalices their memory.
Is sad because they won’t see that they (France) won (unless they can as ghost of something), but still, I wouldn’t say that all was meaningless.
They all died for what they love (in my opinion Enjorlas and les amis de abc for their country and Grantaire for Enjorlas (in their original death at lest))

In the Brazilian cast I saw in 2017 they full on hugged as R cried. They also made R as the adult responsible for Gavroche (much like Courf in the movie) and when Gavroche dies they also embraced and cried and I cried too

In the Dutch version I watched recently (I actually went to see them 4 times), right after Gavroche died, during the second battle, Grantaire was mourning over Gavroche’s dead body when a man was shot down near him. Enjolras climbs down from the barricade to check on the man (who is dead by now). Grantaire makes his way over to Enjolras and Enj grabs R by the neck and kisses him.
And then they both die. 😢

All of those interpretations of Enjolras and Grantaire are just- they're all unique in their own way but they're all beautiful. Especially the body language. I will never get over it.
Grantaire is almost always shorter or/and lower than Enjolras, sort of paraphrasing their relationship where R puts Enjolras on a pedestal and basically venerates him. It makes that one bit in 9:07 where Enjolras kneels and for once, is looking up at Grantaire, like ten times more beautiful and unique but it still works so well.
And in every adaptation you STILL get this sense of complete adoration, desperation and vulnerability from Grantaire, UGHHH I can't it breaks my fucking heart. And Enjolras remains strong and tough and brave because it's his duty as a leader, but he almost always initiates the physical touch in their interaction and tries to comfort R (and himself at the same time but shhhhhh, he'd never admit it).
at 9:18 marius is just jealous, he wants what they have-
And that’s what prompts him to sing the line about Cosette 😭

these are all v beautiful v emotional, but i must say that when they switch it from “death means nothing life a lie” to “life means nothing death a lie” it takes me right out of it and all i can think about is “why why would they do that is doesn’t make sense”
That may’ve been a slip of the tongue from the actor and he just had to roll with it. After all, the show must go on!

When doing the show at as high a level as Broadway or West End I’m guessing they all read the book, and in it, Grantaire and Enjolras are written very romantically. They spend pages on Grantaire’s love for Enjolras and compare them to Greek lovers, etc
