  • It's wintertime on the Florida S-Line. Trains are fewer right now, so we have to get on the road and hunt 'em down.
Plus, I learn a few things on this trip including some facts about the old Cross-Florida Barge Canal.

Yep, cooking the beans while they’re still in the can is genius to avoid lugging around heavy and bulky pots and pans, too bad it’s kind of a slow process on low heat to avoid catching the label on fire and subsequently tainting your own beans with whatever noxious fumes would be produced from the label burning up.

Just a happy accident, but I was cooking a steak (ribeye, my favorite cut) when I stumbled on this episode. Seared in a cast iron pan and finished in a 500° oven. I was biting into my steak just about the time your supper was interrupted by the CSX train at Lochloosa. Excellent show as always, Danny. For some reason I didn't associate a barge canal with Florida, when I read the title. Like you, I learned something new. I initially thought you might have ranged far afield to the CSX, ex-Conrail, ex-Penn Central, nee-New York Central Mohawk Subdivision along the NYS Barge Canal. Of course, there would be no outdoor grilling of steaks there in the winter. You might lose the camp stove in a snow drift. PS. Rob is correct. Pepper after cooking.

You should check out some other infrastructure related to the unfinished barge canal near Fort McCoy on CR 316. There is a high-level bridge over the Ocklawaha River and surrounding woods. There is even a completed fender system under the bridge at the point where the canal was intended to pass under. Also, on the gulf coast near Inglis there is another completed section of canal and locks. US 19 (as opposed to SR 19 shown in the video) crosses the canal near the locks.

Danny, I worked at Channel 13 in the mid to late 1980s in the production department. Worked with Richard Bozeman, Eric Allen, Dave Markwood on Ernie Lee’s Breakfast Beat. I never knew of your train interest and trainfanning.
I’m a train buff, too, I enjoy your videos and saw this one. My grandfather operated huge draglines like those found in the phosphate mines. He lost his life digging the Cross Florida Barge Canal in 1969. This video tells me quite a bit of that area of Florida.
You really do an outstanding job with your videos. Keep up the good work.

Hi Lane!! Man!!! I certainly remember all those names and worked with them all. Bozeman, Pacifico, Grayson, Paul, Benedict, Macholtz, Kirby. There were dozens of them. Plus all the names from News I worked with. That's why I loved being in Promotion. You literally worked with everyone in the station sooner or later. I didn't have the interest in trains back then that I do now. I was all about TV back then. Coming from small Tallahassee, I was enamored of all that big-city talent and capability. I guess that's why I never left. Thanks for your kind compliments.

And when you started talking about the Cross Florida Barge Canal, I thought, "Hey, I ought to tell Danny about the four bridge pillars near the Marion County Sheriff's substation in Santos...but nope, you already knew they were there! The Ocala Jeep Club met there every month when I lived in Florida and one of the other members told me that when they abandoned the canal project, they buried all sorts of equipment there in what is now those woods. Thank you for this combination video from two of your trips on the Florida S-Line in January and February 2023, Danny. You caught some nice manifest trains with a variety of freight cars on them. The B207 phosphate train to BNSF's Clyde Yard in Cicero, Illinois will either stay together to go out to some point on the BNSF in the agricultural areas of the Midwest or be broken down at Clyde Yard to go all over the MIdwest to be used to fertilize America's farmlands. Thank you for the information about the Cross-Florida Barge Canal. I had never heard of that project. Great video as always! Need to take a break from the harsh winter here in Canada, and visit Florida sometime!

Another winner! Loved the executive hobo dinner-sure beats fast food along the S line. Your side trips were interesting. I didn’t know the canal was never finished. Obviously you edited out the heavy traffic congestion near The Villages.😂
