I feel DUMB for not buying a Mercedes CLK63 Black Series when it was cheap, but is it worth $250k???

The irony of flip-flopping between a therapy sponsor and a gambling sponsor.
Thanks Doug
I was thinking the same thing. Oh the irony.
They dont give a shit its free money for them lol no hard to understand lol 😂😂😂
Talk to Fred
🤣😂
i believe Jeremy Clarkson once described this car as "an Axe murderer with headlights"
I had only the CLK500 but at winter it was enough to handle. Even the dealer who sold it to me told me that 'I'll be watching that traction control light a lot' and he was corret 🤣 Spoiler: I've owned only all-wheel drives after that...
I think that may have been the C63 in that comparo w the M3 and RS4
C63 w204 you mean
He actually owned one.
That was the w204 c63 pre facelift and the amount of people that like your comment proves how full of shit people are.
The prices at Barrett Jackson are so hyper inflated I don't know why anyone would buy a car there such a rip off maybe it's a fun experience or whatever but what a racket.
easy come easy go. it's a rich people problem. easy money = easy spending
When u get a bunch of drunk rich guys together with some really nice cars, they gonna make it RAIN! It’s inevitable.
Throw in the buyer and seller premiums, and I agree, I don't know why anyone would use that platform to buy or sell over bringatrailer or carsandbids.
The fees are staggering...
Best to buy from EuroAsian Bob.
I once met a guy at an early morning weekend car meet in La Crescenta with one in 2007-2008 timeframe. He was a retired Air Force pilot whose name escapes me. Big Mercedes guy though, and super laid back. Always had some kind of rare Merc at these meets.
So there he was, with a crowd of onlookers gawking at what looked like a pretty standard CLK of the era (his black edition). I was confused why, at a meet with an AMG Hammer, a few Cosworth Mercedes, 4 or 5 legit RUF Porsches, and more Ferraris and Lamborghinis than I could count, everyone was gathered around this boy-racer looking CLK.
Now I know. Thanks for closing that loop for me. I never knew these were so sought after.
I'd still go for the AMG Hammer though.
I own an 04 CLK500 and absolutely LOVE it. It only has 305 hp but the v8 noise alone puts a smile on my face.
Love this. But what will you do with the remaining $240k?
M113K supercharger and all the ancillaries with the ecu and tcu should cost about 10k. So the question is….. what do you do with the other 230k
@@victorokeahialam8925 Hookers and blackjack.
owned a 04 CLK55 for 9 years. Best car
@@victorokeahialam8925 Manual gearbox, a company now makes a decent looking CLK dtm body kit now, and lotus used to offer the service of developing your car on there test track for about a 100k.
Nice review, Tyler. I was the tall guy you met while filming the unicorn CLK at Barrett Jackson. The eventual buyer was with me. Anyway… I totally understand why you wouldn’t turn off traction control with one you don’t own or have any seat time in, but you actually need to turn it off to really experience the insanity of the CLK63BS.
No shame though… it took me a month with the car to finally grow a pair and turn it off on mine. 😊
The one that got away I think we all have one of those Glad to see the content is back in your feeling better Happy Friday
yeah this is feeling like old Hoovies garage again :-)
I own a 03 CLK 320 and I LOVE it as well. It's also very easy to work on.
I bought a c63 coupe and it has been such joy. Love the NA sound with headers.
Such cool cars, especially with the awesome fender flares. Was obsessed with these when they came out. Brian has an amazing collection.
As a prior owner of a CLK 55 AMG, none of those positive comments you made come to mind when I think of Mercedes. That POS was in the shop more than we drove it, which meant we paid $72k to drive a C class loaner most of the time. There were times we'd go pick it up from the dealership and turn around in the parking lot to put it back in the shop.
U just had a bad one
M113 is one of the best gasoline engines ever made lol.
I almost bought a clk 55amg, I always saw it as the one that got away, however it seems as though I dodged a bullet
@@theaterlightman89with what? They were good cars, bro just had a lemon lol
Cry harder
I’ve had the pleasure of working on a CLK black a few times, have nothing but love for those cars. The one I worked on was rougher, had been driven a fair amount (if I remember right 56k-ish) and was wrapped, was black underneath, had some bumps and bruises and I think at one point was stripped and was a track car. Absolute blast of a car, always did my absolute best to take care of that thing and leave it better than how I got it. The new AMGs are great, but the old school feel of these is what gets me every time
Nice to see you back in full strength 💪
counting to 5 is hard, wait til you get to the tens buddy, it's a wild ride!
The Balck Series was one of my fav Jeremy Clarkson reviews on Top Gear back in the day.
Thanks for the video and Stay safe ✌️.
The reason Mercedes have such awful depreciation is pretty simple: the maintenance and repair costs will put even rich people into the poor house. After the factory warranty is up the repairs can make you stroke out when you see the bill. Especially the suspensions and electrical. So the inevitable will happen with these: people who aren’t car savvy will buy a used Mercedes for the show and flash for say $10,000 then shortly after their suspension goes flat and they find out the repair is $8,000 and can only be done at the Mercedes dealer. So they just end up junking the car.
Not all Mercedes, there are some really good relaible ones out there, esp the ones that use normal coil and spring suspensions like the CLK's, couple that with a M112 or M113 engined car and you have a fairly reliable Mercedes.
Nah, my 75 year old mom has had her 2004 SL500 for about ten years and it's only need about $6,000 total work in that time. The suspension work was $2,500 at an independent shop. There are multiple independent shops in Sacramento that can do that job. It's not a Honda Civic, but... it's also not a Honda Civic.
Although I suppose an ex-girlfriend's Honda Civic Hybrid needed a hybrid batter that she was able to have done for $3,000, so.. there's that.
This is a strange American fenomen. Mercedes is considered reliable in other places.
Always looking forward to your videos Hoovie!
I would sell every car you owned before I got rid of SLS, Countach, conversion van and Grandmas SL
Agreed
He's nothing more than a collector loyalty means nothing.
🚥 “This is just an axe murderer with headlights, and I absolutely adore it!" Jeremy Clarkson always coming through with great One liners 😂
Not this car genius
Crazy watching hoovie drive the same roads i learned on!
As a prior owner of that car it’s the one that got away. I never should’ve sold it.
I was so close to picking one of these up in the low 30s around 2016, I knew they would skyrocket but I didn't think it would be this crazy.
I'm getting whiplash trying to watch this with everything in the background. What a collection. Dang.
Clarkson had an episode on Top Gear about taking a spontaneous road trip in a CLK Black. Always loved that one
I talked my friend into letting me borrow his a couple times. I love everything about it. Just goofy with power, wanting to break loose at the slightest provocation. And that sound! Yum.
Loved these since they first came out. Love the widebody, a real widebody not stuck on fender flares...looking at you Hellcats lol
Drove me nuts when people "corrected" me when I said my CL63 was 6.2 litres. Ignorant people are always SO sure aren't they? My plate was '62LV8' so it really brought them out of the woodwork and it was never "isn't it 6.3 litres ?" like I'd say, nope, these people with their impeccably clean nails always went with the straight forward "6.3 YOU MEAN!".
"No, I mean Six Thousand Two Hundred and Eight cubic centimeters displacement, '63' was an homage, hence the entire range remaining '63' when the smaller twin turbo replaced it". 😅
The free PPP money for rich people to blow has run out. We know now less than 25% went to actual payroll protection and instead was turned into a free handout wealthy people. They spiked the cost of all luxury items for two years afterwards on a huge tax-free money splurge. Almost 2 trillion dollars.
Proof???
what? Research on your own time. No ones going to explain life to you for free.@@Gtrips07
I always wanted an AMG model but like many I couldn't afford one. The closest ones I had was a 92 500SL V8 with upgraded suspension and new trans I installed. Also dialed in the old school jet-tronic fuel injection for more power and did a resonator/ muffler delete. Also had a couple 92-93 W124 420E V8 cars that OK power.
Whole time waiting to get a look at that 86 SVO in the background!
The thing that makes the clk black special, isn’t about how fast or rare or better than the comparative at the time. It’s that it was Mercedes doing it. It was a brief point where we got that “okay yeah do it” moment. Like with the GTR. We get these teasing moments where the engineers have fun and show us what could be with our caring about time or power figures or comfort. Just “yeah we can do it” with out saturating it. That’s why it’s expensive, that’s why it sought after.
Did you not try the paddles? I would have thought it would be more fun if you did rather than driving it in auto? I think it looks awesome! Jezza famously had one and there was some drama over the tyres I seem to remember and it being dangerous to drive in the wet. I thought you might mention if it was on modern tyres. Also Jezza said the ride was too hard (Euro Spec bucket seats carbon door trim) and was thinking about sending it to Lotus for them to try and make it more comfortable.
you should do a 63 build with ackl500. Put wider fenders, definitely possible. This could be the m6 content that actually works cause most of the stuff are shared unlike the m6's mechanical components.
A few years ago i saw a CLK AMG DTM Roadster in Monaco (1 of 80)...at first i was thinking it was a kit car...but after some research i found out it was a reallty special car...
That M635 in the background is an appreciating monster. Rare M88/3 under the hood and those Euro bumpers...
Hoovie I've been following you since the Silver elephant days. You videos always made my day a little brighter.. I'm not posting this for attention but I've been batteling depression for years I lost my job last Tuesday due to a layoff and I found out today that I'm going to loose my daughter, I've been sober now 16 months and my daughter's mother is accusing me of using again and has taken her away i sold my e38 740i to pay for a house for me and my littlegirl.. I've fought for years and finally became the father my 2 year old deserved but I think I've ran my course. I can't afford a lawyer. I have nothing left to sell and my family has turned their back on me due to my past decisions. But I know the lord Jesus in my heart and I just wanted to tell you hoovie keep up the good work you bring a smile to millions of people a day and may God bless you and your family
Hang in there
I was always hoping you’d buy one of these. They are soooooo cool! It’s more special than the SLS.. it really is!!
I mean it's really not considering it's engine and transmission are worse but also probably weighing the same if not more
Back in 2014 we had one at a VW store I worked at… first fast car I ever drove. We had it for about 2 months and it was my daily to get lunch.
I really love your car collections. You are really lucky. You need to make a list of cars you own over the years lol
Would love to see some Mercedes Track days with you and your buddies turning some really fast corners.
Bought an off-lease 2001 CLK 320 with 49k miles. Used it for work and she made me a lot money. I put 300k more miles on it. Original engine, trans, water pump, alternator and AC compressor. Only changed oil, fluids, brakes and one battery. My mechanic said my CLK was the highest mileage gas Benz that he had come through his shop in such great condition. Got hit by a truck and she was totaled in 2011 with 365k miles on it. Sad day for sure.
Do love a black series, that’s why I have all six of them. CK 6 3C 63, Slk 63 SLS, black series, AMGGT black series and an SL 65 black series.
In what videogame???
I know the feeling of waiting on parts. Tired of hearing my driveshaft in my wrangler knocking about! The upgrade should be here the day after tomorrow.
Excellent video I’m on a Mercedes kick I’m searching for either the cl55 or cl63 just can’t decide what year
I've been disassembling a CLK350 at the salvage yard. I see many of the parts are the same on the cars in this video.
There was a rebuilt title CLK63 black series near me in PA not too long ago, I sent it to Ed Bolian but I forgot to send it to you! It was clean and sold for under 60k.
The Mercs i think of are the S-Class and the Sprinter, 2 of the best and most prolific commercials vehicles round
I just saw one at a cars and coffee, legit clk 63 black and the people were clueless as to what it was and it got no play, lol
I’m digging that silver looks like 85 300Zx in the background……..for a V6 back in the day, that thing was a rocket……
In that garage the car that look most out of place but to me the most interesting is the 84 Nissan 300zx Turbo Anniversary Edition.
Hoovie loved the videos
This makes me want to see hoovie drive an sl65 black series now
Very nice video..thanks. 👍✌️
The SLR will definitely go up on price..its way under valued for what it is..and the clk 63 black series is another legend that i think alot of ppl saw going up in value eventually..
nah I think that the engine/5 speed auto combo existed in so many other AMG at the time will hurt it
Stunning car to see however
@@papa_pt honestly a great argument..I agree about the V8/auto ..but it's something about the car that makes it special..I've never experienced one personally..but i remember even from the original Top Gear review on car from Jeremy it had something special..I think he even described it as "mental"..but I'm in my 30's this car is one of those cars back in the day ...I'm biast
@@tonyprosser3010 nah I hear ya I just entered the 30s too lol. There were so many excellent mid 2000s cars like this, the Carrera GT, Ford GT, Murci, F430, etc.
love top gear and grand tour but have never gave much weight to Clarkson's opinions considering he never learned how to drift around a corner correctly
Whenever he mention that he sold the S600 or the SLS 😩 it always break my heart i see them as Tyler’s precious kids 😢
His kids count on an abacus
Nothing is precious he's just a generic car collector that buys shit for either an investment or views.
"Before I hit the road, I need to air up this tire" is peak Hoopty life!
That wandering is so sketchy with that much power
Can't even dream of an AMG V8 but if I did one of these would be right up there. Have an '09 320 CDI Sport (AMG wheels and body sportpack - yes I know it's not real AMG!), and love it. Mixed ECU remap giving nearly 300 bhp, and around 40 mpg on a long run. Have driven 8 hours straight with only gas stops, and felt great after. Also done over 400 miles at average 70 m.p.h. on mixed roads. Have taken up to 145 and felt as stable as heck. The engine is the OM642 which I believe is one of their best ever non V8. Think the ordinary CLK is underrated as gorgeous flowing shape. Looks good from all angles. Actually think mine nicer looking as the black body kit does not look well integrated. Bit of a bolt on look, though as say would bite your hand off for one anyway. And yes, even my wannabe likes to step out.
Hoovie when I say I thought this was a clk 55 dtm just by the thumb nail. I literally lost my sheet , but I slowly was less enthusiastic but overall still excited because knowing you. You will Drive them like are supposed to be..ps I wrote this before finishing the video and now the more I watch I don't think hoovie buys the clk 63
I'm glad you loved your SLS, but to be honest Hoovie, I think it's fine to let someone else enjoy a car in your collection when it's economically best to do so. You shouldn't feel bad about it. I sold my 300ZX because I could no longer take care of it to someone who now loves the car. While I do feel an immense feeling of nostalgia for the car, the up keep and cost to maintain is something I do not miss at all.
Z32s are so hard to work on but so rewarding when they’re running correctly.
Hey Tyler - I took your advice and bought a Chevy Explorer Conversion van!
A chevy 😂
I like your MB lineup, as I am a MB man... But have to say I also appreciate your El Dorito 😂
Has anyone noticed that the Car Wizard looks like actor/comedian Brian Posehn? It's uncanny!!
A little bit, Brian looks more handicapped than wizard lol
There's a guy called Marco Degenhardt from Germany, which looks like a twin of the Car Wizard. He has also a YT channel called Halle 77 and repairs old cars.
@@klk2270 damned if he doesn't! Thanx for the heads up
They do both look like they've been chased around by the townsmen now that you mention it.
Same style but not facial features.
Hoovie go buy a Cadillac DTS with the lux 3 package. It has all that comfy ride and massaging seats but with the great northstar. Plus it’s an old person sedan so no one sees it coming on this mild sleeper.
Hoovie, vw 2.5 ltr Passat sounds like a 10 cylinder car at high rpm s. Yes a 5 cylinder engine with a single exhaust.
Had a 1984 mustang, put in a 1993 gt 40 engine with 3 inch exhaust cross over exhaust. It was loud, but at about 100mph it went silent because of no back pressure. The engine made no noises. It was just go.
Okay, this is officially the most delusional take in the history of cars made by anyone ever
Still hoping for an episode where you visit John Ross’s new place to get ideas for the 3.0 garage
Back in 2011 I was really considering between this and a 993 turbo. Ended up with the Porsche and I'm glad I did. But the black series wouldn't have been too bad either.
4:53 Hoovie does a 'California stop'. Tsk tsk Tyler
Dawg who stops for stop signs
Yeah, the cops never give out tickets and points on people's licenses for not stopping at stop signs, especially near the end of the month, when the quotas are due.@@ihatefsi
Once drove a clk gtr. Can never find video of it but that was my favorite Mercedes ever. Little powerslides out of the auction barn effortlessly. I got to go through 2 times, and it was well over 200k
You drove a car that there's only 26 of?
That must have been incredible. Even in an area where there's 1000 youtube videos on basically any car, you can hardly find anything on the CLK GTR. Probably my favorite street legal care ever made.
I want a CLK Black series so bad! Love them! At the price now, I think the best idea is to build your own.
I was kinda thinking someone would touch on the tie between the black series and the black American express card, I don't have the issue of car & driver anymore but I believe it was a requisite...
I own an equally rare variant; C63 Performance Pack wagon. It comes with the forged version of the M156. Same brakes from the Black Series and has the newer dual clutch transmission. On paper it has a lot of competitors such as the RS4 and M3. But there's just something special about it that you'll never get until you drive one. Being a wagon, I get a decent sized back seat for the kids and the dogs in the back.
That is a rare car hopefully it's fully loaded kit wise that will also massively help, had a couple of week fling with a 2012 507 ( sold for profit ) and honestly I wanted to keep it the engine was fantastic especially on the downshifts I hope you keep yours for a long time !
For easier limping around leaking tires, use one of those cheap cans of goo for emergencies
Very enjoyable Tyler
👍😂😁
I think people underestimate the 545RFE.. its definitely a GOOD gearbox. It can be modified and tuned to shift fast. It was in the E55's, Early Jeep SRTs and Charger/Challenger SRTs. The AMG Variant is the best too, with better internals.
Great Channel...though I never really understood your love of Mercedes but no matter..how about taking the plunge on a LFA...I would be curious on what the Wizard and the guys thought of it...
There won’t be anything to repair on the LFA
A friend uses a clk black as their company car, lugging junk around. (they had the original 500e before that). No idea if they got good money back or sold them as hoopties.
I drove one… An absolute beast. Actually my favorite Top Gear episode drives the CLK Black.
I remember Jeremy Clarkson reviewing the Black Series when it was new, he basically said "no seriously, this one is special". I guess it only took 15 years for people to notice.
If you wanted to do the CL side-by-side thing, why not just adjust the filming schedule until after the new tires were on? Not have to mess with the tire stuff just to leave.
I would like to see a video on the best cars and trucks that hold their value.
Got to replace the head it’s on one a few yrs back I wondered what happened to the back seat Lol the owner removed all the sound deadening 300lbs worth didn’t get to drive after working on it for three weeks. Fun. Car Tyler

Does any other car brand have these many special and now super expensive cars that went almost under the radar at the time?
These instantly became my favorite Merc when Clarkson bought one.
This whole channel provides an interesting insight into the world of auto trading.
Hello there👋👋,how are you today?hope you’re doing well?my God will bless you abundantly Amen!!!😊 🙏
I took in trade a 2008 S65 AMG with 60k miles for $26k back in 2018 on a Ram Crew Cab. I did the paperwork at the customer’s home and got to drive the MB for 2 hours back to the dealership. Over 600 hp was awesome to drive 😊😊😊
The roads are so dull and boring in Kansas. Can never really push anything
Didi I just miss the link to Epicenter Garage that was supposed to be posted below...?
My daily is a clk350 and I explain it to people as the ultimate B+ vehicle. It doesn't do anything perfect, but it does everything really really well. It doesn't really have a flaw.
You're showig us this car and I'm sobbing at the E24
I remember the day when 49,000 miles used to be considered low mileage. Now it apparently means "basically worthless". A car with 2,000 miles after all this time was completely undesirable because all the rubbers are dried out, they used to say "cars are meant to be driven" but I guess today we're all cool with just putting them in storage and looking at them sitting still, rotting away internally...but LOW MILES!
It's crazy how expensive these are in the US, in Europe an example with 50k km would be about 110k euro. No sane person would pay same money for CLK Black as for the SL65 Black
The auction results will probably help increase values of the W208 CLK55. Finally.
V12 money pit big time. Just to get a tune up is like 3-4 K. I drive a 300SD 1983 turbo diesel. Easy to work on low maintenance and a good looking cruising traveling car! Most of my parts from lkq and online mail order. Do all the work myself with help from Renee Martinez in spring, TX.
I can attest to having been given one of these for a weekend. The one thing never do is turn off the ESP almost undriveable and super easy to break loose the tyres.
No no no, turn it off to launch in a semi-straight line, then turn it back on for all other driving. 😅
9:57 wow you would think they could get the label on the engine straight
I'd have the lovely Henna Red M6 next to the Testarossa
CLK63 is easily one of the best looking mercedes ever made.
This has to be one of the best looking AMG's ever. The early to mid 2000's were the golden era of AMG, in my opinion. Proper V8's and V12's, much more muscular then the new ones, and they're not trying to be racy, they're still elegant but agressive. Perfect balance.
Literally one of dream cars I wish the market drops again 😔
