What a great idea for a video! You’re so right that one of the barriers to people trying raw is lack of time and not knowing where to get more variety. You showed it’s possible to feed a balanced diet with just a few ingredients that aren’t hard to source.

I love this video. It shows that Raw feeding does not have to be that difficult or expensive. And you used some ingredients that I consider "super foods, although I realize that that term is used way too much. Pasteurized, eggs, green, tripe, and liver. Also, I think people forget about pork. It is a great protein, and lately it's been a lot more affordable than some others.
I've been feeding Raw for 20 years and my emphasis is variety. This recipe is easy to change up and substitute some things, but still get a great variety. Thank you for making this video. I think it is one of the most helpful videos you have made for beginners. And also a great video to remind people to keep it simple. You don't need 20 ingredients in every bowl and you do not need a bunch of supplements.

Fantastic! This is great for those who are starting to raw feed your pet. Depending on where you live, main chain groceries rarely you will find organ meats, chicken feet, necks. Your best bet is Latin or Asian grocery stores. I buy the main muscle meats at Costco ground beef, beef, pork, bison. The only item I buy online is green tripe but I order this during fall or winter (here in Phoenix AZ will arrive cooked or spoiled. Temps in summer are usually 115F and higher)

This may sound stupid but I don’t math. Saying 20% this 70% that doesn't tell me anything. I need exact measurements. I have a 40 pound shepherd/ terrier mix that is 11 years old. Has had allergies all her life. About a year ago i started feeding her 6 pounds cooked ground turkey, one pound ground chicken or beef or beef liver, 6 hard boiled eggs, 2 cans sardines, 1 medium can salmon with skin and bones. All meat is cooked then mixed together and divided into 7 days. She's getting about a pound of ground meat a day. At first she did better but then started losing weight to much so i added three fourths of a cup of dry food back to her diet. She doesn't seem to be doing as well as she was in the beginning. How should I change her diet? What could her diet be missing? I no longer think I'm doing it right or the best thing for her. 😪

It’s important to use percentages as every dog’s weight will be different.
Weigh your dog. If they weigh say 6kg like our Jack Russells, that’s 6000g.
Adult dogs need 2-3% of their body weight.
      3% of 6000g is 0.03 x 6000g= 180g.
      (3%=3 divided by 100= 0.03)
      2% = 0.02 x 6000g = 120g per day
This will be the total per day.
      Then for muscle meat:
      80% of 180g is 0.8 x 180g = 144g (80%=80 divided by 100 = 0.8)
      10% bone:
      10%= 0.1 x 180g = 18g
      5% liver:
      5%= 0.05 x 180g = 9g
      5% other secreting organs:
      5%= 0.05 x 180g = 9g
      ***
For puppies, you need to feed 8-10% of their weight, so to keep it simple, let’s say 10%.
Our puppies are 2kg (2000g), and they need 8-10% so:
10% of 2000g is 200g. This will be the total per day.
      Then for muscle meat:
      80% of 200g is 0.8 x 200g = 160g (80%=80 divided by 100 = 0.8)
      10% bone:
      10%= 0.1 x 200g = 20g
      5% liver:
      5%= 0.05 x 200g = 10g
      5% other secreting organs:
      5%= 0.05 x 200g = 10g
      I hope that helps!

Hi there, I also feed my 10y.o. Akita cooked ground turkey (I cook it on the raw side)but I add cooked veggies and sometimes fruit... Zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, celery, spinach, broccoli, strawberries and blueberries. I add fresh chopped turmeric with pepper to activate it. And every 5 to 7 days I feed him raw eggs and some kind of fish like salmon, sardines, or mackerel. I'll crunch some egg shells in his bowl for calcium. So there's some suggestions for you I hope that helps.

Your videos are usually great. This one was truly a masterpiece. Most people don't have the time to truly source all the things you usually mention nor funds. This was possibly the most helpful.
You should include a super low budget video. Things like off cut pieces of meat etc.
We have 2 boerboels. That is way too expensive to feed muscle meats. We feed more muscular organs but are still too scared to go off kibbel completely. Thus far, we've managed green tripe, intestines, hearts, liver, kidneys, chicken stomachs, chicken heads feet and necks. We even get super cheap offcuts from our grocery stire but that is lots of fat and some leftover organs. But muscle meat will break the bank.
    Any thoughts?
Maybe we need to add a multivitamin as well. We can also render some fat for cooking lard or to put in out bokashi bucket for the garden too.

    • @PawsofPrey
      @PawsofPrey  Před rokem +1

Awh, well thank you so much!
I do suggest feeding a bit more muscle meat. The variety of muscular organs you can feed is great! But muscle meat really should be a decent bulk of the diet. And please only feed fat raw! Cooked fat has high chance of causing pancreatitis.

I was on the verge of giving up with shop bought prepared raw as my tiny pooch wouldn’t eat it any more only a chicken wing. So she clearly prefers the natural way then raw prepared shop bought. She is only 4.5kg. So I guess it will be a mix of tiny portion sizes. 90g.
My question is…do you have any ideas if you go on holiday with your dog? Especially if there are no fridge facilities to keep the food cold and fresh? i.e hotels. I do have a cold box but they are not great in high heat temperatures.

I add a bit of mag and salt and on occasion some potasium. Organs like liver is where most carnivores get their minerals and vitamins. I like green tripe on occasion as well to mimic nature.

I’m wanting to start adding these kinds of food for my cat , but I know he won’t eat big pieces of food, plus he never eats his wet food which is a small amount all at onceI just added some bits of sardines he loved it, but it might be hours before he goes to plate to finish how would that work with raw meats ?

I have some questions... I have a hard time getting my dogs to eat different textures so I end up grinding everything up together to get them to eat and I noticed you don't grind anything and you put everything as it is on the plate. How did you get your dog to start eating that in addition to your cat?

Yolks are the main nutrient powerhouse! Whites do provide some as well, but mainly amino acids. They also added more calories and for this recipe I just didn't need them.

I’m having a problem with my standard poodle eating raw chicken, hearts, liver or gizzards. She loves sardines, tuna, canned chicken, ground beef and ground pork. Except she did throw up her meal the other day. I decided to cook her food somewhat and she did get some liver in this time because I blended it first and mixed it in with her food. She doesn’t even want beef heart. She loves steak though Lol. My lab eats anything. I feel I’m under feeding them because I keep hearing their stomachs growling. I know they have lost weight. I have also cut out all grains and vegetables. I feed twice a day. I cooked some ground beef, ground pork, beef heart, liver, gizzards and threw in 6 eggs, some small sardines and 3 cans of salmon. I par cooked it. Mixed all together, kind of like, what I call a goulash. Fed my 95 pound lab 3 cups and a big raw ox tail. I fed him again at night the 3 cups but no ox tail. I give my poodle 1 and a half cup and a small raw beef bone with, no meat just marrow. The same for dinner but no bone. We haven’t taken them for a walk in a few days. Work has been hectic. They have just been lazy. Definitely not by choice. So I’m wondering if what I have fed them is adequate for them. When I was feeding them dry, I fed them a little less but my lab was getting chunky. My poodle never over eats. Do you think I’m on the right track ?

With raw you’ll have to feed a lot more since it’s 75% moisture as opposed to like 10% with kibble. For example, for my medium sized dog recommended kibble amount would be like 1 1/2 cups and with raw feeding I feed her about a pound or so. She gets 1/2 lb of a premade raw grind, a salmon belly, chicken wing, and either ground beef, pork or chicken.

I think there needs to be more videos like this. The raw feeding community is starting to get insane when it comes to how many ingredients need to be in a bowl. You have shown with one video that it can be done without 15 or 20 ingredients and another five supplements. And although you do provide services, your emphasis is not to make money. Which is a lot more than I can say for many people out there. I don't know how many face group books, etc. I've participated in where the people are basically telling people that they just cannot do a raw diet correctly without buying a recipe or paying for a nutritionist to tell them what to do. It is such a crock of crap.

Thank you for all the helpful educational content. My dog has been on a commercial raw diet (viva raw, “human grade” for a while while I am learning how to DIY. She also gets an annual fecal parasite exam. But recently we found out she has worms!!! She is an indoor only dog. I am hesitant to go back to feeding raw. Should raw feeders be giving a dewormer? Do you have tips on how I can feed a PMD but lightly cooked/sanitized? Thank you! feeling discouraged.😢

I have an 8 lb. Pom who eats very quickly. He has all his teeth but barely chews his food. He practically swallows chicken necks whole. I'm afraid he will choke on them. I have been sprinkling his food with a pinch of egg shell and add bone broth to his food. Is that sufficient? What do you suggest for getting bones ( or substitutes) into toy breed diets?
