  • ALONE Season 9 Episode 1 premiered last night on the History Channel and it was a good one. Participants are coming out swinging but can they make it in the wild? In this recap video I'll give you my thoughts on the five participants we saw, their locations, strategies, and other observations.
    Season 9 was filmed in Labrador Canada. This area seems WET! There’s moss everywhere, thick spruce timber in the bottoms. Lots of bogs and what looks like old fire scares. As I’ve said before, peoples sites will vary a lot but it looks like there’s a good bit of diversity here which is great for game. It seems like everyone is seeing bear scat and tracks. Benji said his site looks very “stalky” what he’s talking about there is the mosaic of timber and open areas, as well as the dampness of the ground which makes it quiet stalking. Both of those things are great for sneaking around with a bow and arrow. That mosaic also attracts game. Black Flies! That’s something I forgot to mention in the last video. Those things are relentless and can drive you mad if you let them. I’m not sure if they have birch there but you can make an insect repellent by rendering the tar from the bark. But you need a tin can or clay pot to do it. Also, this seems to be a much more game rich area which is awesome! People are knocking down squirrels and grouse right out of the gate!
    Kerri Lee - She seems like she’s spent a lot of time in the woods. Doesn’t seems to be getting to excited which is great. She's scouting her area thoroughly! If you’re going to be living in a place for 2 -3 months, you need to have the best site possible. You need good access to resources (water, building materials, food), dry and sheltered from wind and weather, close to fishing and trapping areas, and somewhere that's not in the middle of the best big game areas. She shot a grouse with her longbow and plucked it which is exactly what she should have done. Relative to the rest of the bird, there’s lots of fat in that skin. As well as the head and neck.
    Benji - From what I can see, I like Benji’s site. He’s got great diversity and tidal influence in the river. He’s foraging right off the bat, picking and eating bunchberries. He’s putting his bow to work and gets a squirrel first thing. Then he got caught in a rainstorm and had to set up his tarp in the rain. That nearly happened to me on my first night at Chilko. Towards the end we can see Benji’s really packed on some pounds, saying he’s going in at 220. That’s really going to help. Seems like he’s got the tenkara fishing figured out and catches a dozen small brookies in a day.
    Jessi - Again, seeing bear sign right off and has a bear come through camp early on. She handles it very well. Seems comfortable which is a great sign. From what I can see of her site, it’s very thick. If the whole thing is like that, it might make things tough. But we may have only seed a little bit of it. I’d like to see some more diversity and hopefully she’ll find it.
    Juan Pablo - Coming at this with an interesting attitude. First thing we here him say is “This area here sucks”. Now, that could just be the edit. He talks about expecting things to suck. That’s the same attitude I took in with me. It may just be the edit but with him it comes off as very negative and that’s not a good thing. It’s good to not hope for the best and expect the worst. That way when anything other than the worst happens, it’s great. But… If you’re not careful it can be a double edged sword. If you tell yourself something sucks, then it sucks which can sometimes blind you to the possibilities hidden within. He put on a lot of weight as well. 60#s. He finds a huge pile of trash which is GOLD out there. Uses it to make a very cool stove with the cans.
    Igor - Scouting his area well. Looking for the best place. Looks like he knows how to shoot his bow. I like his site so far. Good diversity and good tidal influence which also adds to the diversity.
    Jacques - Seems to also be setting up his permanent shelter quickly before scouting. Found a Foot Hold Beaver trap! That’s an 11th item! That right there could potentially be a game changer for him. Especially if he knows some basic beaver sets. And the fact that that trap is there in the first place makes me think there are beaver there.

    I noticed that Karee-Lee saw the storm coming and got her tarp shelter up right away. A key thing she also did at the beginning was to gather dry tender and put it in her pocket! This is opposed to what Terry did in Episode 2. Terry gathered dry tender but did not secure it in a dry place like his backpack or pocket. Lesson learned. Karee-Lee has got it going on. That is a great lesson to be conscious of when out in that situation.

    My observation about Season 9 is the contestants level of expertise and skill sets are extremely impressive. It's a big order but so far I see no slackers in this group.

    I like what you said at 7:20. This was my main takeaway from the episode - there's literally no talk of the risk of losing an arrow, no footage of trying to find missing arrows aside from the one scene where the participant finds the arrow in the grouse. Losing an arrow should be a MASSIVE concern and I would love to see the producers/editors/participants or whoever expand upon that more often. I'm sure the contestants are concerned about it but we would never know judging by what we are shown.

    Clay, in the narrator's commentary, he said the only fishing methods allowed are fly fishing and dip net. That eliminates coastal waters and limits participants to fairly shallow creeks and rivers. After ice-up, fishing will not be possible. If there is a salmon run, netting can yield a season's supply. Also with all the marshy bogs, cutting peat chunks for wall and roof insulation shouldakr for good shelter materials.

  • @therestorationshop
    @therestorationshop Před 2 lety +1

    During the episode some text appeared that said . As such it would appear no gill net and/or standard casting rod. I'm sure the regulations have a size limit on the dip net but that seems like something to make. Benji might be able to, as you said, use some poles to keep fish in that tidal inlet and the pull 'em out with a dip net each morning. Thanks for doing the recap, it add much needed context to the show.

    I lived in Labrador for two years. We went fishing, and the No-See-Em’s were horrendous. I have scars from the bites all over my arms. Luckily I had a net around my head and neck. They are just wicked. They will actually drive a person crazy and animals too. The fishing was excellent there. The winter weather can get 30+ degrees below zero. You can have white outs and lose direction and freeze to death. Frost bite is easy to get if you are not bundled up correctly, and you must constantly think about that. The snow is deep. The wall of snow to the walkway to the front door was 10’ high on either side of shoveled snow. If you do not have a garage, you would have the same 10’ high walls of snow there, where you park your car. I was in top shape back then and it was rough. I do not envy these people.

    Regarding attitude I think that a positive attitude is a better antidote to disappoint than just thinking everything sucks. You can have no expectations and choose not to label your experiences “good” or “bad”. You can have difficult or painful experiences without deciding they are negative, but just part of the process. I used mindfulness meditation to build this mental framework when training for ultramarathons of 50-100 miles through deserts or mountains. I think it’s beneficial in any tough situation in life.

    Love this and all your insight. I can't wait to get your book!
    I'd like to continue to hear you comment on what they brought, like merino wool, and how they use what they find - from trash to benefits/challenges of their sites. The tips about getting all the calories out of the animals or making a bug repellent out of birch sap are also so good to know. I am a bit confused about salt and when it is ok to have salt from the ocean, seaweed, etc. And I'd like to hear more about how it can be used for hunting and preserving - though I know just a touch of the basics.
    Could you comment on the fishing differences? I think maybe this is the only season where they were given lures. I have loved watching contestants make their own lures and fishing stuff. Making stuff, particularly functional but even things that make them happy, when they have so little is inspiring
    If you ever set up links where you get commissions, I would shop from them to support your site and family. A signed book with option for a short message would also make a really special holiday gift. Or t-shirts/caps from your business.
    Your attitude and problem solving approach teaches me so much. I never had a dad growing up, so I am soaking up all of this knowledge you share. I truly appreciate it.

But you mentioned it was one of the traits that carried you through the show. Definitely interesting to see how Juan's journey plays out with that in mind. There's definitely a fine balance between optimism, hope (as your chapter defines it), and reality or whatever you're actually presented with. Whenever someone comes into the show with the attitude of "this is all bliss because it's nature and i'm living out my fantasy" there should be some concerns associated with that. You can't win by trying to live out a fantasy scenario.

    a. Since one can go quite a while without food, and
    b. One is going to lose calories, (energy) as each day goes by, and
    c. It takes so many calories to build a proper shelter,
    d. One would think it would be best to build a shelter as one of the first things to do, (which can be added to and made better as time went on).
    e. Without a proper shelter, and especially if one is wet and/or it's windy, one could lose so many more calories.

The environment is very similar and not too far from where I bear hunt. I frequently stalk the areas where the food sorses are. I believe it is just a matter of time before one or more get a bear.
    My question is. I will not shoot a bear on a warm day when I'm way in because of spoilage. I'm wondering if some may have brought salt to preserve the bear before they go into hybridization thier the food sorses are gone . I don't know how well smoking would work for bear. Hi Clay, with the seemingly abundant game available do you think there’s a chance that the show goes on for more than 100 days? What is your guess?
    Also, will you ever do another bow class in Idaho?

    I just finished episode 1 of season 9 and I am really excited for this season! Labrador looks amazing and there seems to be lots of possibilities in this location. I would venture to say more so than Chilco Lake. I especially like the tidal zone as that should be a very productive ecosystem for survival, similar to Vancouver Island. I was very surprised to hear you say that nobody brought a gill net though. I think you are right that they must not be allowed. The question in my mind is are they not allowed due to local game laws or because the show producers chose to remove that item from the list of allowed items. I have read that the show producers have been intentionally trying to shorten the duration of the season by making it more difficult for contestants to gather food. Curious to hear your thoughts on that. I know you and the other season 8 contestants definitely had to deal with a lot of strict rules and regulations that limited your ability to get food.

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  Před 2 lety +1

      I doubt they want to shorten the season but who knows. The longer it is, thr more footage they have to work with.

    • @mmiller73
      @mmiller73 Před 2 lety

      I am sure it gets very expensive to keep all of the support and medical staff onsite beyond 2 months and that’s more than enough time to get enough footage for a 12 episode season.

My question is, and maybe they've already addressed this, in polar bear country are they still relying on pepper spray or are they giving the participants some kind of way to deal with these polar bears like a shotgun with slugs or something like that in case one were to attack?

    And Juan's can cache, that is a well used Canadian fish camp, they even had a shot of the worn trail from the river to the site. Americans fishing salmon need to stop for lunch, and Juan's site has been well used for that. The cans were all food related, jumbo sized for a group. So no paint cans, hah.
