I completely agree with you, its very disappointing why BMW got rid of F650GS it's a great bike and delivers wonderfully. I wish we could raise a petition and convince them to make 650's again.

Great to be in agreement - I am actually picking up another G650GS tomorrow - red. Very excited. But the sertao takes the cake. @@pegasusmotorcycletours Looooved your comprehensive review ... the best yet Ive seen, for ANY bike 👍 youre looking towards xchallenge... seriously look for an xmoto... inverted forks, 10" of travel & less vulnerable plastics, I personally feel the 19" front with a 120/90 is much better for adventure gravel roads & even forestry type terrain, a bigger footprint... I really believe the market has been con'd into following motox trends without exploring othersetups... look seriously at a g650xmoto... cheers from NZ

Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting I did bro. It’s a great idea. The only things I might do differently are use stainless bolts and nuts, and possibly put the bolts pointing upwards, with the nuts on top.
There’s probably not a huge advantage to this, except that you eliminate the risk of the bolt ends coming into contact with the floor.
The advantage of stainless bolts is obvious, even though it’s unlikely that you’re going to need to remove the puck in the future. But the capacity for those few threads exposed to the elements for years, to cause untold issues in the future, is simply off the scale. I like to plan for such eventualities.
For the same reason I used to fit long brass exhaust stud nuts. I’m going to start doing that again.
Exhaust studs have got smaller in diameter over the years. And when they snap off JUST INSIDE the threaded hole in an alloy head... not funny. Not even close.
The advantage of brass is that it’s a different material from the stud, and it’s slightly softer. So even if the exposed threads of the stud corrode, it won’t have corroded TO the nut.
Also, using a brass nut that’s twice as long as a conventional nut means that the stresses are evened out over more threads, there’s a greater surface area upon which to grip with whatever tools are available in an emergency, and there’s less likelihood of threads actually being exposed! 🧐
I’m not sure who does long brass exhaust stud nuts these days. I’m just typing my 62 year old brain farts into my phone - in the spirit of sharing collected wisdom. If I cannot find any on eBay, I may just have to make some.

They are UNF or some other imperial threat I think. I tended for classic cars, ie cars that were new the year I left school...!
Anyway, hexagonal brass stock is available, so all we need is a lathe, the correct drills, some good taps, and patience. Tapping brass is a slow and tricky process. It’s very easy to advance too far without backing out to clear the swarf.
Now I’m thinking this is a perfect job for a CNC lathe.

The Husqvarna Terra is another very rare bike I’ve never seen here in the UK. And only made for two years? Crazy. It’s interesting for many reasons. One is the fact that it’s quoted as putting out 58hp, whereas the BMWs are rated at 50hp. I wonder what’s different. Stage 1 cams, high compression piston, and larger inlet valves plus engine management that allows another 1000rpm possibly. I wonder how that affects reliability and fuel consumption. I hope not much. That’s a nice looking bike. Baby Nuda style.
This is how rare they are in the UK, an exhaust system is for sale on eBay for £627. But there are apparently no bikes for sale here! Most are in Italy and Germany.

Great video! I have a 2007 F650 GS but love the Dakar/Sertão. Unfortunately they are a bit too tall for me. I do like the more angular styling of the G650GS/Sertão more than the curvy F650 (and also the black painted engine), so a G650GS with my spoked F650GS wheels would be the perfect bike for me.

I was just about to buy an F800GSA but stumbled on this bike and now watching reviews. I’ve been riding superbikes for 30 years so the weight and size of the 800 is a bit intimidating. This Sertao might be a better option. I love the look of it.
Yes, excellent bike for the money, and as much weight as one ought to be riding offroad with luggage. It has plenty of power, is simple, durable, and attractive, and holds its value well. Weight of the big GS’s is not an issue in Europe , because 90% of all GS’s in Europe never leave the tarmac. I have a Yamaha XT660r adventure bike ,also lightweight,single cylinder,fuel injected.. very good off-road bike( unfortunately it’s never sold in the U.S.)

Have had some great rides already and I have some exciting adventures planned ahead here in Australia. Did you end up modifying the bash plate set up and adding any crash bars? Crash bars would be a wise addition but the bash plate would be last on my list since it comes with an aluminum one already. I just painted mine black to better match the Sretao. Fantastic review! The Sertao is definitely one of the best do-it-all motorcycles I have ever ridden. Thanks for the tips on the KLR foot pegs and shifters working on the Sertao! I have been watching for a folding shifter and that will help!

If you are considering a lighter adv touring bike than please see my review of the other 650 thumpers. I also recently picked up a KTM SXC625 which is another bike in the same class so please consider subscribing to be notified when that review comes out as well as the review of my Honda XR650L. As for the xchallenge I was going to take it to compete in the GS Trophy west next month but they wont let me use it against the massive 1250GS. Makes sense but too bad. Loved your attention to detail... question. I have a 2005 Dakar here in Costa Rica. This year bike the rotax engine still made in Austria correct? I love my bike!

You'd love the sertao in that case. I ride the KTM 790 and don't miss my BMWs but the sertao was special, and great looking. Thanks for sharing.
Great review. A bit of a love story.
I wanted the Sertao for many years but was between bikes. I decided to buy myself a bike for my 60th birthday and a used Sertao was definitely a contender. I no longer ride hard off road so I wanted an ADV bike for back roads and mild off road. I bought a new G310GS and despite your disparaging comments, it's the bike for me. I seldom ride on highways but it'll do 70 MPH all day. It's lighter than the G650GS, it has six gears, a gear indicator, a fuel gauge, a large and very sturdy rear rack and tubeless tires. Shifting is very smooth. I wish BMW made a G310GS Adventure with another 1.5 to 2.0 gallons of fuel (my biggest complaint), tubeless spoke wheels, and maybe another inch of suspension travel to be the same as the G650GS and maybe full rebound and preload adjustments on the suspension front and back.
I think a 450 cc single cylinder bike is probably the sweet spot for lightweight adventure touring. I'm a big guy but I don't carry much gear. I carry a 66 liter roll top duffel bag on the pillion and rear rack so there's no aerodynamic drag on the road and nothing to catch on rocks and trees off road, however the bike does tip all the way to the ground when dropped so it's more difficult to lift.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours - As I mentioned, I carry a 66 liter roll top waterproof duffel on the rear rack and pillion. It's not mounted across the rack and hanging over panniers as is common. I don't have panniers. The duffel bag is mounted longitudinally and doesn't hang off the side of the bike.
As my channel name suggests, I do ultralight motorcycle camping, but I'm not roughing it like some people who travel light with a ground pad, blanket and tarp. I'm actually camping comfortably, but without a lot of the stuff many motorcycle campers pack, such as a coffee press, air mattress inflator, a large roll bag of kitchen "essentials", an ice chest, a drone for aerial photography, etc. My channel is just getting started but I recently uploaded a video demonstrating how I camp and showing the motorcycle fully loaded. It's just the one duffel bag. Feel free to scrub through the video to skip the riding to see the camping. The video title is "Solo Motorcycle Camping In The Daniel Boone National Forest".
I've always ridden small dual sport thumpers but now that I'm 62 years old I *really* don't want a heavy bike. Many older guys are downsizing to keep riding. I'm 6'2" (188 cm) and I weigh 230 pounds (104 kg). The G310GS is a bit small for me but not too bad. I raised the bars 30mm. BMW designed the baby GS for beginners (often young people) and the Asian market, but large adults can ride it. Most of us bought it for back roads, gravel roads, dirt roads and mild off road but there are a few videos on CZcams showing the G310GS doing hard off road and doing it surprisingly well but I'd recommend swapping the alloy rims for spoke wheels and maybe beefier suspension for hard off road use. The baby GS is certainly more comfortable and capable on the road than my small dual sports were.
The baby GS does well enough on highways on the few occasions I'm on highways. It has no trouble hauling me and my camping gear up steep hills, on or off road. I ride with friends and they aren't waiting for me, although admittedly I have the throttle pinned when climbing steep roads. It's fun to ride a slow bike fast. I'm full throttle sometimes and I do more shifting to get the most out of the 34 HP... but the G650GS is only 50 HP or a little less? It's not all that much difference. Not like the guys doing the Trans America Trail on Honda Trail 125 bikes.
At this stage in my life, the G310GS is far from being the limiting factor in my adventures.
Found it...G450X was a neat machine. Seen one in Wyoming in 2014. The people weren't at their trailer and we had to leave. Didn't get to talk to the owner.
That's even a rarer bike - I own the 650XChallenge, and there were three iterations of it. The Country and Xmoto. Amazing bikes all three. I've never seen the 450 in person.

Thanks for the reply. The x country sold before I could get to it, so I will keep my Sertao. It is a bit tall for me, so I am getting a Seat Concepts seat to bring it down a bit, and will be putting the pucks on the kickstand to help with the kickstand issue. So far I love the bike. Happy New Year!

@@shaundisch2020 Have you noticed any differences in the sertao’s stability when on the side stand (with the 2 pucks on it?). Mine fell over twice in a parking lot when facing a very very slight downhill.

Hi Nik. Loved your video. I actually was persuaded to buy a Sertao in order to ride some of the BDRs. However I am now thinking I should go lighter, and am looking at a 2007 BMW X country. I believe you have/had the X Challenge. What do you think is a better bike -the Sertao or X Country?
Hi. Happy new year. In virtue of the weight savings bit more importantly of the suspension, the x country is a more capable bike although it has a smaller front wheel in the front. Still the suspension is of a much better componentry so it would be a better performer. Either bike will retain good value and could be had for about 5 grand. The left ‘dummy muffler’ is your catalytic converter. The right is the actual muffler. Keep both. Both are good!
hahaha good point! I realize the left muffler is put to use, but there is still quite a few inches of cylindrical potential storage space that would be perfect as a hidden compartment for ADV touring ( if heat proofed) BMW could have made that rear portion of the left can accessible, if anything for a tool kit - hidden, waterproof, inconspicuous storage space would be a great thing to add to any ADV touring motorcycle. @@pegasusmotorcycletours Already subscribed, thanks. PS I have owned around 50 bikes, 15 of which were BMW, the older, the better... the best was my 1968 R69S and my 1986 GS800 DAKAR. I wanted a Sertao or 650 DAKAR when they came out, but life was in the way.
My favorite bikes remain under 800 CCs, and prefer singles cylinder or twin airheads. As much as I liked my Guzzis, never again, PIAGGIO is difficult to deal with when you have a warranty failure. My other all time favorite was one of my 5 Morinis, an 81 CAMEL.. excellent bike. For an all time favorite "touring" bike.. my 1964 NSU SUPER MAX. Proof that a single cylinder 250 can get you there and back in comfort and trouble free. .. with the right tires, all terrain.

Hi there. It is basically the same motorcycle, to be very honest, aside form the aesthetics mostly noticeable in the front end. The rear subframe is entirely the same, dimension wise, so much so that luggage racks and carriers are for the most part interchangeable. I review the F650GS as well so please take a look at that to get more insights into their differences and similarities. I have reviewed most of the 650 ADV thumpers on this channel, so please take a look through my videos - I find the BMW Sertao to be a very worth competitor to most of them. I also still have in my garage waiting to get reviewed the Honda XR650L and KTM SXC 625, as well as the BMW XChallenge. The original BMW F650 (aka the "Funduro") which was a sister to the Aprilla Pegaso also had dual carbs.
You are rifht - 2 mikuni carbs for the F650GS from 1994-2000. I suppose a more appropriate comparison on my end would have been with the more modern Pegaso Trail model - thanks for being part of the conversation.

I didn't notice any drastic differences honestly. The suspensi9n is solid enough to make the wheel dsize difference negligible.

Have you had any issues with the sub frame breaking with the large pannier weight? I just fitted 40 ly panniers and a little concerned about the sub frame flex
I have not, but that is a serious concern depending how much you are carrying. You should never overload the bike past the recommendations by BMW, and never try to do any kind of shock loading from jumps when loaded with luggage or passenger. The subframe was a prticularily week on the other 650GS - the cross challenge, so much so that Touratech had an aftermarket steel subframe for purchase. The last year of production BMW changed the material to a stronger one, and those were found in the yellow cross country g650GS bikes. I do think the Sertao subframe is a bit beefier, but your point is valid and I have not had any negative personal experiences with this bike and that point. Thanks for watching.

The F is plenty for a new dirt rider, but if you have a chance to snatch a Dakar or Sertao, you will not be disappointment because dirt riding is more enjoyable on that machine, if getting more comfortable on dirt is your ultimate goal. They hold their value better as well and are rarer, so it's a wise investment. Good luck!

Shocked to hear someone say the 650 Rotax isn’t smooth. I find it incredibly smooth for a single. Spend some time on an older 690! 🤮

Yes I do realize the other side is the muffler and other side is the catalyst but it seems like there's at least half of it that is not being utilized. I think they created it's that way for a aesthetic purposes, then again hot air passing through limits what is could be used for. It was just an idea of mine that I hope gets implemented for 4 ADV bikes to have secret compartments. Be well and see you in the next review.

One of the best reviews I seen... & Ive seen a LOT!... That 1st "muffler" isn't there just for looks... its a catalytic converter for emissions & a fair bit heavier than the muffler... the twin spark isnt twin plugs, it sparks twice in the ignition cycle again for emissions

PS those star bolts/ screws are "Torx" screws (said like "talks" as in talking🙄)... better than hex head allen head screws... supposedly... its a european thing... look for a g650xmoto if you can, thats my preferred single cyl unicorn bike... the others the seriously underrated tdm900 with yzf450 suspension & tenere'ized with xtz750 tenere fairings etc

Are the ring clamps that hold the shock remote reservoir to the frame proprietary? I can't find them anywhere. A standard ring clamp is too wide for the slot in the cradle.

I reckon you are right. I think they started competing against themselves, and there was a general push toward bigger, more techy adv bikes which is now starting to get reversed finally.

Hey pegasus. You gave me some advice a few weeks ago which was very helpful and nice of you. Had a new question if you get the chance. So i leaned over on my new used 2012 bmw g650gs without realizing i didnt have the kick down. Bike fell and the clutch lever on the handle was bent out from the handle. Its still working the same but i havent been able to check all the gears cause i’m still learning and practicing in my driveway in first gear. But everything seems okay. However, where the clutch meets the housing (where you can see the cable) there seems to be a little more slack than before. And theres also some wobble up and down as if the housing holding the clutch has widened a bit. Tried tightening it to no avail. Ordered new clutch and i hope that solves most of it. My question is is this a serious problem and could I have done damage to the cable, insides, or clutch operating system of the bike? Is that wobble room fixable without getting new housing on top of the new clutch i ordered? Any insight would again be awesome. Anyway, love your content thanks for making great and helpful vids.
Hi there. Thanks for your question. The clutch cable can be adjusted in two different places, basically on both ends. You can adjust it with the wheel up top connected to the lever, and then you can adjust it at the bottom by the clutch housing itself. So on both ends of the cable. Because cables scratch, manufacturers install them with this in mind so that you can have the proper amount of freeplay. Play is measured by pulling the clutch in slightly, until you finally start to feel pressure. I'm talking minute inmortal pressure until resistance is felt. There should be around 2 to 3 millimeters of FreePlay at the clutch lever, where the lever is connected to the cable and touches the resting plate. It's normally two or three mm, but every bike is different so please check your manual. This is super easy and can be adjusted while you are riding even. If this is not enough to get to the desired Spec's, you can adjust the clutch cable at the Bottom by the clutch plate itself. Free play is very important to maintain in Spec because if it isn't, your clutch cable is not adjusted properly and it might be engaging the clutch the whole time you are riding. What happens then is the clutch gets burned, expands while it's overheating, and suddenly you lose it mid ride and you can't make it home cause you can't engage the gears. This is called clutch slippage. Then you have to replace the clutch plates which is a big job. So maintaining proper cable free play is crucial to longevity of your clutch itself. But You can't really mess up the gears if you drop the bike on the lever, the most you can damage is the lever itself. I highly doubt you can even damage the cable in this way. The levers are meant to bend or break the tips off so that you are still able to ride home. So don't be alarmed, you didn't make any additional damage to the vehicle by simply breaking the lever. If you want to have a fresh look, feel free to replace that lever. It's good to learn and it's an easy job. Keep your old bent lever as a reserve for potential touring trips. And what I always do is I buy another Reserve clutch cable, and I run it alongside the existing cable, and zip tie then together without obviously connecting it in either end. This way if my clutch cable snaps while I'm on the road, I have another one to replace it which its not taking any space in my luggage. You can do something similar with your foot controls, and break lever. I hope this helps, feel free to ask if you have more questions. And don't be afraid to tackle this yourself because it is simple and it's good to know. Good luck.
@@pegasusmotorcycletours right on. thanks again for the response. pretty dumb follow up question, but specs means specifications? also, how can i be sure the clutch is properly adjusted and not constantly engaged like you were talking about? is there a definitive way to make sure? just check if theres those couple mm's of freeplay and that'll mean that its generally adjusted properly right? i see the adjuster further down the clutch. at like the second bend, if that makes sense. its a circle with 3 settings. i have that adjuster set to 1. which seems to be the least amount of slack. but i'll have to look for the other adjuster spot you're referring to.
i plan to get it looked at by a mechanic just in general when i get some more savings again. but for now i wanna do my best to make sure its not in danger of getting damaged in any way cause i also don't have any repair money at the moment. the extra clutch handle is all i could afford right now as far as repairs go. so i appreciate your help. and i do definitely plan to replace it myself when the spare clutch comes. and i'll definitely save the old one. but yeah how can i make sure theres no slippage occurring. just as long as theres the little bit of freeplay right?

I'm just buying my first bike, and I've found a 2015 krl650 and a bmw g650gs around me, the ladder being a hundred cheaper (and also inspired by this video to search for before going through with the klr). which one should a beginner go for? I've never ridden at all. I want to mainly commute and have a sturdy mostly road worthy commuting/traveling bike, but I'm also going for dual sport/adventure cause I'd of course like to do a little light off road and trails eventually. Anyway, you seem to like the bmw more, but if you had to say for a beginner? I do prefer the bmw looks wise. But yeah, your advice would be so appreciated. Would you take the Sertao on a round the world trip (like through out of the way the Stans etc)? I have the option of picking one up to AUD$7k (29,000kms) and was thinking of gearing it up for my upcoming RWT but was curious about maintenance in out of the way places.
I would probably prefer to take the dr650 or the xr650l for their inconspicuous looks, better we off road capability, lighter weight, and cheaper and easier maintenance in distant places. The dr I sold 3 years ago to a surfer just return after 70k miles of touring the Americas. I'll be setting up a N even where he speaks (you can see Gene in my review of the dr.) Another client I'm training now wants to do exactly the same thing woth a surfboard and also bought a Dr. Gene has no regrets about taking the Dr.
Thanks Nic - funnily I’ve also been looking into the DR though never considered the XR (which I’ll start looking into as a comparison between the two). I’ve seen a RWT vlog with the DR and it seemed bullet proof (and inconspicuous as you say).

Yes, they are hard to find cause they are desirable and sell quickly. But they aren't too rare. It all depends on your location. It really is a great looking bike. For a first ride it is close to perfect. Yes, great products overall. I think Rocky mountain powersports is their main retailer although I am not quite sure on that. They don't seem to produce specifically for bmw motorcycles, however some stuff made for the DR and KLR fits perfectly on the GS. I can't speak for more items aside of the few mentioned in the video.

@@YannQuentel Your question cut short at " Do you recommend the..." Yes, in my experience, the Tusk lever that was marketed for the KLR also fit on the Sertao, albeit, with the caveat that it sticks out a bit more. I found this a bit undesirable since you don't want the levers to catch on anything or hit the ground after a fall. It looks fine, and it does have the pivot, but so does the stock KLR lever. So that is what I can tell you, albeit I can't speak if the new production of Tusk lever meant for the Kawasaki will also fit the Sertao like mine did. I would be hesitant to confirm since I am not privy to that info. I hope this helps.

Hi there, is a high mileage Sertao with 55000 km a good buy? How much mileage do you have on your bike so far? You mentioned some more vibrations than the KLR650, could that be a dealbreaker for someone coming from a twin? And do you plan any future mods like lighter exhausts for instance? Have you ridden the Husqvarna TR650? It has the same engine as the Sertao but with 8-10 more horsepower and is said to be also much smoother. Thanks.
Thanks for the question. For me anything over 30k miles on a thumper is getting up there. These are solid engines when taken care of. My klr650 has closer to 40k hard miles so it's not a deal breaker if the bike has been kept well. It's more about the seller and previous owner than the bike for me honestly.

Your (great!) videos have been the nr1 reason that I wanted to get me a g 650 GS Sertao... Past-sentence since I struggle a lot with this after I just saw several videos about how painfull it is to work on the 650 gs engine -to check the valve adj. for example.
After that I saw how incredible more easy it is to DIY on a KLR...
I wonder : is the BMW *really* the bike for doing adventure biking?? :-/
Great to have you here. For me reliability and easy of spare parts takes precendent when choosing the adv bike. If you look at my vatrom review i talk about how difficult it was to find a basic part for.the gs1200 that was crashed and that costs us 4 days. The klr is definitely a more commom amd simple machine. From what you have written I have to conclude the content of this video is not your opinion anymore? meaning: the G 650 GS is not your "favourite" (and therefor at least a very good one for adv-riding) anymore?

Btw: I already saw your honda review and that PLUS what I wrote got me thinking IF I should get me a used sartano as my first bike as someone who likes it to go off-beaten paths.
@@noidea2655 I actuslly do think think this to be one of my favorite al laround aDV touring bikes I have owned so far - and there have been close to 50. If I had to choose one bike to own for the rest of my days, it would most likely be the Sertao. That said, I do have three other ADV 650s in the garage now that Iam getting to know, among which is the =XChallenge. Same engine, just lighter. The problem is that there is very few aftermarket parts available, and the subframe is too weak to carry gear in OEM form. I need a bigger tank as well and those are hard to come by in the US. The air shock in the rear can be problematic as well. MY KTM SXC 625 is a monster of a bike, however the same complaints apply. I would not take eoither of these on a world tour - but wouldn't think twice about the Sertao. But both of these are lighter and more durt capable, albeit they can't carry enough for a serious ADV tour in OEM form. The Sertao Can. I hope that clarifies it.

Do the seats swap between the Sertao and the F650GS? Looking for a lower seat option.
They do (or should*) since the frame and tank is the same. I believe the lowest OEM option is around 30-31 inches. I am not sure there is a difference between seats of the Regular f650GS and G650GS. Good luck.

Hi - thanks for being here. Yes absolutely - there is typically little difference between US and Canadian offerings. They are typically batched together in the North American market offerings. The Sertão was available only in the Aura white and Arroyo blue paint, at a Canadian price of $10,250 in 2018.

Hey mate- am quiet stuck between two 650 bikes, and seeing as you are extremely experienced in the ADV field, would be great and also greatly appreciated to have your possible input. Essentially, I want to do motorbike weekend camping, but at the same time do some highway/trail riding. Nothing major, but my main purpose is to get out into nature for relaxation and better mental health/clearing of the mind. My two options currently are the DR650 and the BMW G650GS Sertao. I can find both at reasonable prices here in Australia, albeit the DR650 is a tad/bit harder to come across, usually they also have higher kms and are more older etc. I was also considering a drz400 (saw one in the background of this video in your backyard I am pretty sure at 16:44) but pretty sure I have decided against it due to it lacking a 6th gear (which I think you need on highways) and it seeming way less solid/built than it's brother the DR650.

Hello Eman. Thank you for your inquiry. I've reviewed both the Dr and the DRZ. It seems the DRZ will not be your best choice, and of you can score a sertao, I'd go that route since they retain their value better and come with amenities such as ABS, heated grips, etc.

Hi ! I have just subscribed to your channel , it’s very nice ! I would ask an advice to you..I never had a motorcycle , some month ago I bought as 1 motorcycle an Honda XR 650 R , it’s great , I want modify it a lot to transform it in a real adv bike (rally kit , big tank ) . But now I was thinking about some things..the first about the electric ignition (it doesn’t have one ) and the lack of keys to turn on..so I fear for the first reason that maybe it’s not so good , the second reason that I couldn’t use it in city or somewhere because maybe they can stolen it easily..so now I don’t know if spend some money to modify it or sell it and buy a new one like the sertao or a similar moto..about that type I am worried about the weight..so I am very confuse..can you give me some advice and your opinion? Hi Mark Glad to have you - welcome to the channel. I have reviewed almost every 650 ADV bike on the used market, and the XR650L is next in line so please take a look at the others to get a better overview of what bikes are your options. The XR650R is not road legal in the USA without modification (blinkers and such) so you would have a harder time in that regard. It is a more dirt oriented bike than the XR650L, and a bit lighter and more powerful - but beginner riders do not need that much dirt capability. The Sertao is the perfect bike for this reason also cause it has ABS and other amenities. I also have the XR650L, fully ADV ready with every possible aftermarket addition, but the Sertao "feels" more manageable. It is not as dirt oriented so it all depends on how heavy you plan to stick to off roading. The lack of ignition is a big issue due to theft obviously - you can add one on but that will require a visit to the local shop. The other issues is carrying capacity - those bikes have weaker subframes and were not intended for long haul touring or luggage/passenger carrying. My vote would be to put the price high and try to sell it - these have a cult following so you will be able to sell it for a good amount . In the meantime learn on it but aim for another more ADV oriented bike. Anyways the majority of your miles would be on asphalt so keep that in mind. Good luck with your search.
Also - it is always more economical time and money wise to find a bike that has already been modified for ADV touring. It takes a lot of time and money to do that, and the return on investment after sale is meager.

I have the predecessor to the Sertão (03 Dakar) and I have only two major gripes. I find the foot pegs to be too far forward to be comfortable when I'm out of the saddle for long periods of time. My second gripe is with the buzzy engine - if I am on pavement for several hours it becomes really uncomfortable.
As far as the clunky gearbox and false neutrals, that's just BMW being BMW from my experiences.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I've never owned the Dakar. I see them every now and again on the market and they hold their value well. The thumpers are always too buzzy for my taste, I prefer s twin.

Thanks so much. The XChallenge is a rare bike so any parts are hard to find. Most notably the cush drives that are no longer in production. The luggage carriers and engine guard is also difficult to source. Otherwise same.rotax engine.
2. Both have the same tech, nothing too crazy, switchable abs and some may have heated grips. the x challenge does have an air shock in the rear though.
3. Yes BMWs are know for expensive repairs but unlike the big brother these are simple.machikes and the engine is very reliable.
4. Cycle trader, smart cycle guide, Craigslist, fb marketplace, offer up. Happy hunting.

Saludos. Sertao, for sure. Aside from part availability where you live, it's a better bike all around so nice it has lower mileage and it retains it's called e due to rarity.
If you had the chance to buy a 12 klr650 with 17,000 miles vs a 03 f650gs with 24,000 miles which one would you pick? They're both almost the same price under 3k I'm debating which one to buy

I found 2 of those Sertao around my area here in the US for under 4k. But for 6k you can buy a brand new klr650 from one of my local kawasaki dealers.

Great Video, I just found a 2006 BMW GS 650 Dakar that I am buying. What is your opinion on that bike? I am 52yo and this is my 1st dual sport bike, I have ridden Harleys for years and some dirt bikes. The bike seems to be in great shape.

Hi there. The Dakar is an excellent machine that also maintains it's value due to its rarity and appeal. Not much other than aesthetics are different between it and the Sertao. And that is mainly the front end of the bike. I did a full review of that older generation of F650GS so please taker a look - it isn't a Dakar, but the information will apply.
