Kentucky is 8-3 but the basketball Cats have lost 3 of 4 games against Power-5 competition.

Kentucky is not an NBA training facility. It's a college. We want college basketball players. It's the players responsibility to get NBA ready, not our coach's. His responsibility is to win games.

That's an oversimplification....every coach will tell you they are there to develop players in every way they can, winning is a by product of that player development.

It's like when people say Cal's offense is the same. And when I ask what about it is the same and what is different...there's no comment because they have bought into a media narrative instead of facts. I took notes during the UCLA game where he modified the offense into 6 different sets during different times during the game but when I asked someone who is normally critical, he just said "I didn't see anything different"....of course you didn't....

Right on Point KSR! CAL taking a shot at UK fans is an Easy Out for his Coaching Failures despite that the overwhelming majority of UK fans have been doing what he suggested for years now. We listen to the same monotone excuses about, “we’re to young”, “inexperienced,” haven’t learned to be cohesive with each other, etc etc etc…Don’t take pot shots & Fans that have been supportive & patient for you because your Upset that you continue to be out-coached every time we face a formidable foe on the hardwood.

@@JayJay-hg3ut CAL isn’t going anywhere no matter how bad it gets. That’s what happens when The Athletic Director gives out Lifetime contracts. Winning becomes less important. CAL is a phenomenal recruiter & he should be given an Executive job within the Basketball Administration at UK. He’s gonna get paid no matter what so let him gets recruits here.
As far as who coaches. Needs to be someone who has shown stability not a coach who is currently hot for the first time (ex: Billy Gillipse). Xavier’s Sean Miller has time & time again shown he can coach. If he had UK’s talent, no doubt they would be winning nearly every game. But getting CAL to step down, just from coaching, he can still be head of Basketball Operations, that’s going to be a tough job to get done. Just don’t see it happening anytime soon. I doubt we ever see another lifetime contract given out again. But if it does happen, no doubt BARNHART would be the one to do it again.

@@sethpryor5046 Sean Miller gets that kind of talent. When he was at Arizona he was getting too recruiting classes and was doing a better job with them. I like him and I think if we don’t move on him he will get a good job next year or the year after. Cleared of everything at Arizona as well.

He was not one of Cals favorites.Some players go in to the game knowing one mistake and they are back on the bench while his favorites can make a dozen mistakes and stay in the game.

Hell he had the opportunity to probably start this year if he had of stayed and been a little patient. Hell he scored that many points due to he shot 18 free throws in a 2 overtime game. He’s not doing that every game.
Thing is, We have players that need to play. Chris Livingston, Adou Thiero, Cason Wallace, Antonio Reeves, And Cason Wallace all need to play. Adou Thiero is a special player, and IMO id try Cason, Antonio, Adou, Chris Livingston, and oscar. as a line up. I think that is the best lineup we have. 💯

@@BK-jt5im yes I've been saying it all year. This team was literally putting up almost 100 ppg until Savhir wheeler came back. Yeah there will be some games when we may need him, like against teams who press Alot, and late game ball handling situations. But his lack of length, athleticism and not really being a scoring threat Hurts the team. When he is on the bench we have a better length, size, shooting, and defense. He isn't a KY caliper Point Guard. He is a good basketball player no doubt, but he isn't what this team needs.

I really don't see a problem with Livingston playing the 3. Good point about today's fans and social media though. That's true. I also think we as Kentucky fans are looking around at the rest of the SEC, seeing how strong it's become, and we don't want to be pushed around in OUR conference by anybody.

Comments from a man who has a lifetime contract worth 9 million a year. 50 million dollar buy out if UK decides to move on from him. This causes me to question his comments, his dedication and willingness to be accountable. In understand coaching is hard with the expectations at Kentucky, but that’s why he is paid with a lifetime contract, to deliver on expectations. Just my humble opinion.
After the loss to St. Peter's, Cal said everything would be on the table (for change). Nothing has changed.
There are upsets in tournaments. You get enough invites, there will an upset or two in the archives. It's happened to UCLA, Duke, North Carolina, Indiana, Villanova, Gonzaga, Michigan State and Kentucky. It happened to Pitino, Tubby and Cal. Virginia lost to a 16 seed. The following year they cut down the nets. Didn't change offense or It's pack line defense. Last year's team nearly received a 1 seed and easily handled Kansas on its home floor. Cal's not changing anything. Nor should he. Cal is not intimidated by fans. He told you get lost when he gave Obama a basketball. And he knows his style and success keeps top tier athletes committing. Kentucky just like Duke is a usual suspect to go to Final Four and win it. That's all you can ask in a single elimination tournament that requires you win six straight games.

UK is no longer the winningest team in college basketball. This happened under Cal's watch. If you're fine with that then you won't have a problem with more losses coming up.

I disagree with you on Livingston in certain games like UCLA.
He needs to look at the man in the mirror to start the blame game. If they play like they have in pre season, the SEC will chew them up and crap them out. Cal them can wipe their behinds, he has got real good at it since he took a knee in Florida. Don't baby these guys, they are men, and they need to be treated as such. There is enough money in this state to buy him out, and there are people ready to sign the check to do so.

Matt's just upset Cal won't talk to him anymore but gave an interview to a couple of unknown goofballs. At his core I believe Matt is a good person and truly loves this state and UK. Instead of recruiting these tweener 3/4's like Hopkins, Livingston, Brooks, and Kahlil Whitney (remember him?) that don't work in Cal's system. Recruit legit power forwards like Julius Randle or Terrance Jones and legit small forwards like MKG. Or even better change your system to 2022 standards so a guy like Bryce Hopkins doesn't have to transfer! How about we recruit a stretch 4 so we can have floor spacing so guys like Oscar ad Sahvir that cant shoot have room to operate.
Remember Tyrese Maxey? He averaged like 13ppg at UK and had to fight and claw for every single point cause the offense was so unbalanced and packed in that he had to shoot all these tough 8-10ft runners with two defenders draped all over him. Now he's averaging 25ppg in the NBA! He should've averaged 18ppg at UK with layups, 3's, mid-range shots. We're seeing the same thing this year with Wallace struggling to utilize his talents in the half-court vs the really good teams.
Cal keeps running the offense like it's 25 years ago and it doesn't work. He could have Steph Curry in the lineup and he'd be shooting 20% from 3 with this system because there's no way to get good shots.
He couldn’t until next year - Cal fell of recruiting wise first - which caused him to switch to these fringe 5* who are not able to get better under cal, next year is a true cal class - which means that’s his last year to get the ship right before he’s gone IMO

I subscribed to KSR this year just before the football season began, thinking I could get some more in depth coverage since I live in Virginia now. I am unsubscribing! All I’ve heard has been griping and complaining. You have the right to your opinions and I agree with some of them, even some concerning Calipari, but I think in Matt Jones case this gotten to the “I don’t like John Calipari and want him gone *period"* stage. That’s OK, but I can’t say that I’ve heard or read very much objective reporting here.
Let me preface what I’m about to say by saying I’ve been following KY Basketball for about 60 years, I go all the way back to coach Rupp. Even had a web site in the early days of the internet. _(The Stoney Fork Page)_ This doesn’t make me any more of an expert than anyone else.
Where I will disagree with Matt here is I do not believe Calipari is “blaming” the fans. He’s just pointing out the reality of the situation. You’re right most programs receive the kind of scrutiny Ky does…BUT because it is KY it gets emphasized far more. Of course it can be said the criticism is of Calipari, but it’s the players that have to get out there and do it, and I sure wouldn’t enjoy that with all the noise around them right now. I’m not saying ignore poor performance and coaching, but the situation at KY is unique and comes with problems other don’t have. With NIL issues it’s even more so today. The KY job takes a general manager almost as well as a coach; maybe KY should make Cal GM and hire an a coach to do the X's and O's…I don’t know. But if it comes to replacing Cal, I don’t know who I would want…could be difficult decision.

My money's on the former. Notice that Duke lost to Wake the other night, did their fans suggest that the coach should be fired. Heck, UNC is 8-4 and ESPN does a fluff piece on Hubert Davis. Why is Calipari exempt from some fan patience? Winning cures all ills, so don't start defecating on the program when they lose to Mizzou on the 28th. This team WILL make you proud.

People have every right to blame coach on or for whatever. People can have whatever mixed emotions they choose. I don't think personally that everything negative is cals fault but I do not agree with some of his decisions currently. However, the man does hit the nail on the head when he stated it's getting harder to coach and play at ky especially pertaining to the fan base! This fan base is so spoiled from its own success in previous years it ultimately denies accepting the facts that uk and the remaining blue blood programs aren't the only legitimate elite programs anymore. Competition is getting far more competitive and successful across the board than the past 4 and 5 decades combined but when you have a fan base that refuses to give these guys credit after a win because it wasn't a ranked team, a nobody or you didn't beat them by 60+ points then you have a serious, almost irreversible problem unfortunately. Myself and others can blame coach for as little or as much as one needs to but the fact of the matter still obviously stands that no matter how cal coaches stubbornly or adjustingly, the players can't seem to find a consistent rhythm, jive nor can they consistently make shots and that's on them not coach. @Melanie Schmidt thank you so much! I just want to clarify that I am a 40 year wildcat fan through and through with 0 biased opinions or thoughts pertaining to the cats and other programs as well.
It disappoints me that the times have changed and uk can't be the dominant force it was for years past kinda like alabama football is becoming.
However, I can appreciate and acknowledge competition coming up across the board, nil, transfer portal, etc which makes it substantially harder to achieve those historical successes.
It would be harder to accept as a uk fan if elite teams like duke, unc, Kansas, Michigan state, Gonzaga, Louisville, etc didn't have the same current unfortunate resume this season as we do basically lol! Uh uk actually has a better resume than some of these teams so... anyone remember the 2 teams that played for the national title last season and their resume then? Didn't we blow those 2 teams out away from Rupp? Didn't unc fans give up on unc from October to early Feb, ultimately jumping back on that band wagon? Yeah, fans are best aren't they?
Well, I tell you what I'd do if I was cals #1 recruiting class coming into 23/24. I'd reopen my recruitment and look for a home where the fans actually understood today's upcoming competition and didn't throw shade at me being engaged to someone I loved or crying because me and my team won but didn't win by 90!
Finally, random people and Podcasters ESP think they know what's best but may I dare ask why they're not the ones out on the court playing, coaching or in the hall of fame anything?? Maybe some of these fans need to set up an interview with mitch Barnhart and let's see if they can bring a banner home each season, undefeated each season as well ofcourse... uks standards these days.

These coach's are played millions of dollars each year it is there job to prepare there team on game day I agree the coach can't play the game for them but if he's not putting a good game play together it's on him. It seems Cal's offensive playing style is the problem. He refuses to run screens/ picks when every other college program does to create space & scoring opportunities. Our players play with one hand behind their back under Cal's dribble drive offense. I'm amazed our HOF coach & his highly paid assistants can't see this, or change their style of play.

Oh it is his fault. Idk if u actually pay attention to the games or listen to them but he’s 100% at fault. He sets and screams and hollers constantly. Players can’t focus on the game for having to look to the sideline every 15 seconds. So now their not only scared or making a mistake and getting pulled out of the game but he’s taking their focus from them too
Matt take it from a girl you need to humble your self and talk to Cal. We all know Cal needs to improve and make changes. Cal is not going anywhere for 2-4 years so making every KSR about Cal hate does nothing.

Whether you agree or disagree with Matt on things this is easily to agree with him on? UK fans will and always will be insane. We care to the point of “overcaring”. The truth is Cal is a “salesman” and people are starting to see through it. Let him say what he says. We can see through it. We haven’t won a NCAA Tournament game since 2019… is that Kentucky standards? Not winning 1 tourney game? Last year we go in with a 2 seed with the PLAYER OF THE YEAR and lose to St Mary’s. Is that on the players?

Maybe it takes a voice like yours to get to Cal. I don’t think we need a coaching change. We need a coach that has the ability to adapt. Instead of tweaking a lineup, maybe tweak his offensive mindset. Absolutely kills me seeing these kids coming off screens and the defense sliding through the screen as well. Teach them how to roll off a screen. Combinations do matter. Think what an effective pick and roll combination would look like using Cason and Oscar. Scary. I say hire Phil Jackson to come spend some time with Cal.
And can a team have too much talent ?? Absolutely. A 7-8 man rotation is all that’s needed. It’s tough on any player to get in the flow of a game knowing he’s coming out if he misses a rotation.

I still believe all in all we have the best coach around. Some may be hotter now but doubt they’d be crazy enough to come here. I also understand Cal’s statement, if I was a coach recruiting against UK, all I’d do is show the player comments like here. Other places have toxic fans but we’ve become Tenn. fans. I watch the games and see Cal get these guys in the right position but he can’t run out and execute for them and that’s been the issue. Missing Free Throws and wide open 3’s is not Cal’s fault. We have players that hit shots against weaker teams and can’t hit the floor against good teams. Maybe because they think too much about what fans are gonna say or whatever, who knows but I’m going to support these players/Cal win or lose!

Sounds like it’s hard to coach here if you can’t develop players and now you’ve got guys that can’t jump ship so soon so the coach has to coach/develop players and Cal can’t or won’t get it done.
He isn’t the Cal from the beginning and that is sad. I don’t blame the players I blame him. He’s the coach. His job is to play them at their strengths. It’s his job to be able to fix it. I think he lets his pride block his potential as a coach sometimes.

I disagree that Livingston shouldn't play the three. There was a time when there were just 2 forwards, not a 4 and a 3. Chris can play the 3 like a 4 or just a forward. He's good enough at the 3 and is tough going to the basket. I like him there. I think we're all hoping that Toppin will get tougher, let the gane come to him and whomever is in his ear, he gets away from. Lance is just playing harder and its a message to Toppin coming off the bench. Toppin reminds me somewhat of Rod Rhodes. I liked what Cal did, limiting Wheerler's time and on the bench the last 4 minutes. Giving Wallace some time at the 1 which he shined, although beit against a cupcake. I don't think anyone thought we would flop against major competition. It happened and now its got to be fixed, if it can. There's work to be done lol. Oscar is not good on defense, especially the pick and roll. Toppin needs to get mentally tougher and take advantage of his athleticism. Livingston needs more time, CJ needs confidence, Wallace needs more 1 experience especially taking care of the ball. Onyenso needs more time, Thiero needs to produce in practice. Kid can play. And some more things. But all fixable.
The games where he played the 4, he forgot he was supposed to take out the ball after the other team's made baskets. He also couldn't remember his spots in the offense and looked uncomfortable and lost. When he went back to the 3, he busted out. This is another example of Cal getting blasted when he does try something different, then gets blasted for going back to playing the kid at his position. This was a good take. I agree With Matt. Yeah, our fans are crazy, but so are other states teams. I went To NCAA Championship (football) in Indy last year. GA vs Bama and I was Shocked of how nasty the fans were. Fighting and cussing each other out in the name of their school/team. We aren’t the only dedicated fan base that have negative people. And another thing, yeah Chris Livingston can play the 3, I'd rather see him at the 4 but I think Cal doesn't want to do that because he has lance and toppin and Damion who are all fighting for minutes. Savhir wheeler being on the roster with cals ignorant un dying loyalty to him as the point guard is making it hard to have a good lineup. Chris Livingston needs to play, he is too good to sit on the bench. Adou Thiero needs to play. I think he brings energy and toughness to the team. Ugonna needs to play too. This team is so talented yet cal is torn between playing the new talented kids and the guys that have been here forever. We have a team that should be top 3 in the country, but Cal won't play the right line ups. It's baffles me TBH.
