Funny watching someone who didn't just have surgery make the movements looks so easy. Now try doing it all while being in excruciating pain.

I had spinal fusion and decompression l3-s1 6 days ago. I was given Norco tablets for pain. I was walking an hour after surgery. I took one tablet day 1, then 1 that night then none the next day, then two overnight the next two nights. I haven't had one now since two nights ago. The hardest things were turning over in bed at night. I was released 4 days after surgery when drainage was slow enough. Today I'm at about 8k steps.

@@JohnReyst Nice. I had L5S1 discectomy. Was pretty much back to 100% after 2 months. Playing golf, lifting heavy at the gym, and no taking it easy at work. Still get a little sore after playing golf, but it goes away quickly. The key was definitely getting back to walking as much as possible as quickly as possible. Physical therapy helped a lot too, but you can easily find the exercises they give you online and do them at home. Sounds like you are on the right track. Good luck with your recovery.

Lord I wish I’d found this before my surgery. I’ve more than likely made my recovery more difficult because I had NO idea of how to get in and out of my bed, or the car, or a chair for that matter. Crossing my legs were impossible the first 2 weeks after surgery, what I would have given to have a tool to help me get dressed and not be dependent on my family. Shame on my doctor for not preparing me for after surgery, “don’t pick up anything over 5 pounds, and don’t bend at the waste” is not enough information. I’m upset at what I personally went through but I hope others benefit from your wonderful series. Honestly, if they’re not going to give us the right I nfo at least guide us to your series. Again, this is great wish I’d seen it 4 weeks ago.

      Yep,
The staff at my surgeon's office and my surgeon were wonderful, but a little lacking on what I would be facing when I got home. Information like this would have helped so much, along with a realistic idea of what I could expect to do after surgery. If anyone is going to go through this surgery please realize that you basically can't do anything for about 3-4 days and you really will need help the first 1-2 days so get someone you trust to be your aid for several days. Also to be mentioned is pet care, if you have a dog like I do, and he is big and strong, you will not be able to walk him/her for several weeks or more likely months if they are at all prone to suddenly bursting or running after something as you will really hurt yourself.

I'm confused as to how people don't know how to logroll in bed or get out of bed or get in/out of a car. I had to do multiple sessions of physical therapy prior to insurance even considering an SI injection. This is always taught. And for anyone going through SI pain surely this is common sense. People always watch me get in an out of vehicles and I always explain I'm disabled not nuts.
Grabbers, back scratchers, shoe horns, they even have tools to help you get your socks on. I'm 8 days post op and when I came home I had to figure out how to scoop poop. My neighbor was taking care of the cats but he wasn't a good poop scooper. I unscrewed my broom handle and duct taped my scoop to the end of it and voila! no bending to scoop poop. I made another one to shovel clean litter from the container to the litter box. I used my crutches as claws and picked up empty cat dishes and put them on the table temporarily as I wasn't using it. The water bowl is there as well. No bending and I'm self sufficient. Plus I get my morning walk in. You don't realize in the begining how much walking that is but it would get rid of the stiffness from sleeping.
I tied a reusable bag around the top of my walker and if I wanted coffee and toast. I'd make coffee put it in a thermos, put the toast in a napkin, both in the bag and walk it to my recliner. It was my biggest worry because while there are people in my life and they say they'll help I know I can't depend on them.
I waited 6 years for this surgery. Nothing was stopping me. And I walk down my stairs like a child for now but if I can have my outdoor life back again, it's all worth it.

@@MaryAnn-zh1vk oh I wish you so much luck. And the walking really helps. Don't overdo it but those 10 minute shuffles through the house a couple times a day really help. Don't bend over. Unless you live alone and it's something your cat will eat and it can harm them. And then there's a way to do it. I'm going to find the link and put it here, it was very helpful. I took ballet when I was a teenager so I used some moves that saved me. If it falls on the floor and it's not important, leave it. You'll get it later. Or push it under the couch with your crutch.
Anything you do as far as stretching or bending, pull your abs in towards your back, it takes the pressure off the SI and you'll be amazed. And I can't stress it enough but drink water. I'm a water drinker and drove the nurses nuts with how much I drank. But make sure you get it in you feel better and you'll have to get up to pee.

The above is the link on how to bend while standing. You can practice before surgery. It's more of a curve. Remember, pull your abs in.
I had invasive surgery with staples and a huge wound that I could feel the bandage. It felt awful squishy, not normal like it was going to burst. They say it can hold A LOT of blood but if you think something is off be sure to call your Dr. I had an infection and I'm one of those 'I don't want to bother you nice people' and waited longer than I should have. Don't do that with your health.
I'm sure your kitty will nurse you back to good health. 😺

You should create a series of videos for hospitals to purchase and play prior to being released from the hospital. Ironically many of these things have NEVER been discussed at ant of my 4 spine surgeries. I would be willing to pay $10 out of pocket for the video just to have success just once. I never received a follow up care booklet, phamplet, or any literature. My surgeon ONLY says limitations verbally "lift equal to a gallon of milk or less". Guess he assumes he might be caught up in a disability case (obviously opposes people who would need it). Also I am not involved in a lawsuit or employee comp case, so I don't understand why he refuses to be a tad more informative. I have been told non of restrictions from the video? (3rd lumbar fusion with 2 Failed Back Surgeries) Why? Yet when asking my Spine Surgeon straight out my limitations are or what to avoid his response is "I need to go check your chart, have an emergency as he directly finds it necessary to cut my release and follow-ups short, etc. Basically he says anything to avoid answering that specific question after EVERY surgery I've had with him. Also he never states anything in his notes or dictations. Seems crazy to me?! Possibly he is not ethical for lack of better words. Also he is the only Spine surgeon within a 3 hr round-trip from me. My choice of a different Physician is nearly impossible since I can not drive due to "severe" Narcolepsy. Add chronic 24 he non-stop pain & lack of sleep - makes a Narcolepsy person somewhat similar to an intoxicated driver as far as being able to drive safely . I do not have any family in the area nor have made any friends since we moved to this small rural town. Public transportation is unheard of in the area. I spoke to my Pastor and even he posted a need for ride assistance in the bulletin 4 wks (I am willing to pay someone), also advertised in the local newspaper and on Facebook Sale, Swap, Employment sites - did not get 1 response. Rural Healthcare access in America is pitiful. No Spine Doctor even has a 1x a month clinic at the local 5 Hospitals 30 min in ea direction. That profession must have a shortage or not want to serve small rural areas? Anyone thinking of moving to Podunk Nowhere with health issues - DON'T DO IT you will regret the decision. Something simple like these folks offer wpuld really save multiple surgeries and help one heal properly. Kudos to you for taking your time to produce this video informing those of us who lack a decent Doctor.

I don’t have pain from my back yet but it’s so annoying just watching my back fold in on itself. It’s not even physical just mental. I’ve been thinking about getting this, but I don’t even know if it’s possible to ever bend your back after it. From what it looks like no and that seems like shitty living. Genuinely. I have two fused vertebras already and they’re always stiff and sore. I cant ever crack my back successfully and that’s most of the reason I don’t want it. But I have so bad of a curve that I’ll probably need to get it. Please tell me there is some sort of alternative or maybe I can still move my back. I don’t want a stiff back on top of having Spina Bifida. I get a new diagnosis physical or mental each year I’m sick of this.

@@prodigyxwho2933 It actually went great. The first two weeks are the worst as far as pain goes but it still wasn't horrible. It was kinda hard to remember not to twist from getting out of bed. I would recommend a bidet because when you try to wipe your tail it makes you twist. Not too many people can wipe without twisting. Amazon has them for about 40 bucks. I gave up pain pills after week 4 because its a pain in the butt trying to get a refill. They give you about 5 days worth and then you have to call your doctor for more then chase down a prescription then go to the drug store. Its ridiculous that they won't give a months supply to begin with. All I take now is low dose Flexiril. I could stand something like Tylenol 3 after I go to the grocery store but I'm not even going to ask for it lol. Anyway, I started physical therapy a couple of days ago and its just some streeeetching exercises. 😁 The most important thing is that my pain from L4and L5 is GONE! Its wonderful. Good luck to everyone!

I have a couple of questions and can I get an answer because no one answers and I feel as if it is one sided what is DDD called if all your disc are gone all I see every where are referrals to hospitals that only talk about one or two disc being gone and no mention of if all disc are gone? I’ve been told by a surgeon he wouldn’t touch my spine because he’d paralyze me so I thanked the troubled surgeon and shook his han for honesty then I went for a second opinion the second was telling me the first didn’t know what he was taking about sounding so unprofessional. I stopped him before being treated and asked him for an mri and told him if he saw that surgery was possible I’d agree and have him do surgery but two weeks later he looked at my mri results and apologized and asked how was I dealing with it so told him with meds for pain so he said if it works keep going NOW 18 years later taking pain meds while being monitored and two yearly visits I’ve managed to keep my job still employed at ups I’m 23 years employed and I’m happy but now with the cdc opioid issue I’ve been downsized and live in pain 20% of the time

We with previous total knee replacements can’t have the same range of motion as the model. There’s no way I could put my socks and shoes on
