  • Black Mountain trail is located about 13 miles north of Idylwild California just off of state route 243. This trail is a 12 ½ mile up and back that climbs 2300 feet straight up to a total elevation of just about 7700 feet and may take you about 2 hours one way depending on how much you choose to stop along the way. As you climb the mountain you will be rewarded with some of the most scenic trail views you can find anywhere here in Southern California.

    Regina is right, the 2door is perfect as it is and absolutely doesn’t need more lift and bigger tires to run most trails. I have a 3 inch metalcloak lift and 35’s on my 2 door JL and have never needed more than that.

    • @Malc664

    Regina, I agree, stick with the 35s you got on the 2-door. 35s on a 2-door is the equivalent of 37s on a 4-door. More than good enough.

    @jeffwelsh1185 Před 2 lety +1

    Hey Brad,
    Great video as always. Glad to see Jordan made it home safe from deployment.
    I spent a lot of time in that area as my grandfather homesteaded over the hills from there in Anza in the late 40’s. If you go south to Garner valley and head up the mountain on Devils ladder you can go up the Thomas mountain and over the top and down the other side into Batista canyon in anza valley. One year a friend took us up there in the snow in a 72 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 and when we got to the top , we heard an old engine chugging up from the other side. It was my grandpa and grandma in my grandpa’s 1924 Chevy touring car coming up to the top. All bundled up with blankets over there legs with no heater.
    At the junction of Hwy 371 in the valley, you can go up Santa Rosa mountain, at the top is a log cabin my grand dad use to deer hunt out of in the 1930’s.
    On the east side of the valley is coyote canyon, that use to be a pretty technical trail. That went all the way down to berreigo springs . We use to run that on bikes and buggies, grandpa would run that in an old international scout 80 powered by a Chevy 327, and carry the coolers and fuel for everyone.
    Always a family affair. Glad to see you, your son and Ms. Regina out enjoying what the lord provides for us to enjoy in our hobby.
    Semper fi.

    Near the end of Black Mountain Rd, there used to be a YMCA camp called Camp Lackey. I spent several summers up there. The bussed us up in full sized school buses, it took around 90 minutes or so to do the 12 miles. Some of the turns required Austin Powers style 12 pt. turns to get through it. The camp was closed years ago and what was left of it burned to the ground in one of the fires that occurred in the area. I guessing the road was a little better maintained back then.
