That's a part of how Tolkien viewed things. He saw the entire history of the world as a gradual diminishment of things. Cities become less grand, people become diminished in stature and lifespan, wars become less grand, the green and beautiful world becomes grey and tired, with the entire process broken up every so often by moments of defiant brilliance. As grand as Minas Tirith is, it could never compare to Gondolin; as terrible and perilous as Mordor is, it could never compare to Angband. Sauron himself is utterly outmatched by the terror and evil of Morgoth.

Just finished watching part 1 and 2 of Morgoth's story. Wow. This was seriously a good one. The way you tell the story is phenomenal. I'm reading the Silmarillion for the first time and it's confusing and slow until you get to chapter 3. Thank you so much for breaking down the discord in the music of the Anuir and Morgoth's origins. I thought Melkor was the first evil (sort of like Satan) , and then Morgoth came. I didn't know they were one in the same. smh Thank you for breaking it down for us first timers.

I just love how powerful these elves of the first age are! And there were some great elven kingdoms with glittering magnificence such as Gondolin, Hithlum, Nargothrond and Doriath. First age was the peak age of this middle earth lore for sure. Not to mention the Noldorian warriors like Fingolfin, Feanor, Glorfindel and co.. they all could single handedly spank Sauron for good and made him their servant if they survived till the 3rd age.

    • @LagunaShirogane

Glorfindel did survive into the 3rd Age. He saved Frodo's life from the Nazgul after he was stabbed by the Morgul Blade. He died in Gondolin but like Gandalf, he was blessed by Eru and allowed to return instead of goin to Valinor. Unfortunately by the time Glorfindel returned, nearly an entire Age or more had passed, Morgoth had been defeated, and Beleriand sunk to the bottom of the Great Sea.

It's perhaps important to mention the fact that during the first battle, Denethor (the Prince of the Laiquendi/Nandor of Ossiriand) and his retinue were cut off from their army and encircled at Amon Ereb, were they all were killed, before Thingol and the Sindar could come to their rescue. The loss of their leader and the massive casualties during the battle struck the Laiquendi with grief and fear and they never actively participated in a major battle again, nor did they chose a new leader. They hid inside the forests of Ossiriand and became suspicious and almost unfriendly to outsiders (except for Beren and Lúthien who lived with them during their second mortal live, as well as other elves).
