In this video we're going to look at how exactly to find your head voice. This means being able to singing higher, longer and without strain so you can begin to sing with more freedom throughout all of your vocal ranges.
Most people try and sing higher notes but unfortunately it’s in their chest voice. The problem with this is you begin to force or belt your vocals which can damage your voice or hinder you from singing for longer, sustained periods.
In this lesson, we'll also cover what your chest voice and falsetto are. And towards the end, I’ll give you one of my favorite vocal exercises to help you strengthen your head voice each day. Don’t miss this one!

I can't really tell if I'm using my chest voice or not when I hit higher pitches, and often when I try your exercises, I find myself naturally going into falsetto. I don't know what it's supposed to feel like to achieve a head voice.

Good point...many coaches believe to know the difference but they dont. An it is clear they go into falsetto as well claiming it as head voice...anyway, it should not matter if you hit high notes and it sounds good.

I think this video has finally helped me realise (after literally years!) that there’s a distinction between head voice and falsetto - some people use the terms interchangeably as though they’re the same thing but I guess not. I always seemed to only have two choices when trying to sing higher: pull chest voice and sound strained or flip to falsetto and sound ridiculous. But this video helped me find that lighter speech-like quality which I guess is true head voice - it’s not that tense flutey sound of falsetto nor trying to hold onto the full strength of chest voice. I always thought I was searching for mixed voice but turns out I probably hadn’t properly found head voice. Now I’ve found it and can know it for what it is, it feels like I can probably strengthen it and then achieve that elusive mixed voice. Exciting!

Good question! Head voice is exactly what you want to use when you're in your higher registering. "Belting" can be extremely stressful on your voice. If you want more power in those top notes you can try using a more nasal mixed tone, as well as working to strengthen and develop your head voice so it sounds stronger. I hope this helps.

I was at a show last night and I realized I just sing with my chest voice, and that makes me strain a lot and sometimes I feel like I'm putting so much pressure there that my throat is going to explode. It feels impossible to sing in head voice (the voice disappears after a few seconds and then there's just air passing through) and it varies from day to day. I don't know how much of my struggle comes from the muscular changes (I may need one more year to have my new voice fully formed) or just from not practicing enough. Gonna give myself a chance and study my voice while it is not done. :)
