I am using this for the first time as we speak. I actually got on CZcams just to see what people thought and how well it works. I have always just done the DME route. My local brew store shut down and I was looking for a source where I could pick up my liquid yeast. Found North Texas Homebrew Supply in Plano, TX. It’s about 3 1/2 west but I have family close by and was going there anyway. The owner greeted me at the door and was super nice and knowledgeable. He had all the yeast I was looking for and asked if I had ever used proper. He gave me a can and said just try it! Pretty easy and straightforward. I just did it so I won’t have any results until tomorrow. I do love the foam stopper for the flask. It allows for really good O2 & CO2 exchange. Just soak in Star San, wring out and put in place. I know the foil & rubber band works fine. You should try a loose foil with no rubber band sometime. Your starter will get more O2 and let the CO2 escape for an even healthier starter. Great video, keep it up!

Appreciate it! I couldn’t agree more. Very simple and straightforward, and beer has turned out great. I always felt the foil & rubber band were a bit janky, and I’ve since added a foam stopper. Cheers and happy brewing 🍻

Definitely worth it for me! I don't harvest yeast....yet 😀...but seems like this would be a great way to do that on the front end too! Cheers 🍻

Never used proper starter or any canned wort. I do DME starters. But I can see where this saves maybe 1/2 hrs of time. I'll have to look at the cost benefit to see if it's worth my time. Good job!

Appreciate it Curt! Would love to get your thoughts on cost vs. time savings once you've looked into it! Cheers 🍻

@OZKOutdoorBrewing I guess material wise it's cheaper using DME. But estimated 45 mins to boil, cool, and pitch. My times free. There is the labor and hassle to take into account. I build a huge stater so one pack of yeast gets me two to three brews.

Honestly, I think once you start doing >1L starters (i.e. any Lagers whatsoever), the economics fall apart.
Using one of these for a 1L ale starter or something wouldn't be bad.
Good to have a few on hand just in case you're short on time, but if time is available, making your own would be the way to go.
