Framerate Comparison 15/30/60/120fps

  • Animation of bouncing balls, to show the difference between four framerates, or to check at what framerate CZcams is running on your device.
    The uploaded video has 120 frames per second. Currently CZcams can show max 60 fps, so the difference between the 60 and 120 fps ball should be invisible (at least for now).
    Note that no motion blur is applied to this animation so it appears more choppy than the average footage of a camera.

      Well, if you use a 120 Hz monitor then double speed a 60FPS video, the video would play at 120FPS. I have experience with my 75 Hz monitor, if I 1.25x a 60FPS video, the video will play at 75FPS.

      +Lucurous our eyes can only see a difference at 60FPS and lower, however 120 fps makes a difference, because coupled with a 120+ Hz monitor you will notice a cleaner image with sharper lines, in First Person Shooter games this is important as it helps with accuracy at high level competitive game play (pixel warfare) it is not really useful for anything else.

    There IS a difference between 60 and 120 because the video was animated at 120, so even if the video is only at 60, the 120 ball's position is more precise.

    • @Padicus
      @Padicus Před rokem +2

      Quite the opposite. For 60 you are watching the exact frames that were animated. For 120 you are only watching half, which means that you are actually losing precision. You can see this by checking that the 120 never touches the ground and is never in line with the other three balls. The way this has been truncated has caused the ball to be half a frame ahead of everything else.

      Because this test is not 100% accurate. CZcams cannot support video in higher refresh rate than 60, so it removes every second frame of the 120fps ball. This means that the 120fps ball will actually be moving at 60fps and the frame showing the ball touching the ground is being removed to cut the fps down.

    This seems to be rigged. I switched to 30 fps and stopped the video at a frame in which the "30" ball is in a different position than the "60". At 30 fps they should be at the same height all the time.

    • @nlmaster9811
      @nlmaster9811 Před 8 lety +20

      +tues lol, that can be simply explained, it is between frames, because it is recorded at 60fps then changed down to 30fps it won't quite be in perfect sync with the rate of the video. its taking one of the frames where it would be behind at 60fps instead of the frames when they are side at 30fps.

    • @JRexRegis
      @JRexRegis Před 8 lety +3

      it's because you paused it at a moment when the 30 FPS ball skipped the frame the 60 fps one was currently in. because it has twice the frames, that happens with every other one.

    • @andreb732
      @andreb732 Před 7 lety

      Then why does the same thing happen with the 120FPS ball, where as it should go the same speed als the 60 one?? (60FPS is the max on youtube). - The difference is quite big too.

  • @destinywaits9410
    @destinywaits9410 Před 6 lety

    the 120fps shouldn't even be there. The video can only play at 60fps, and setting it 0.5 speed won't change anything. If you watch the 120fps ball you can tell that because it is having to deal with half the framerate it is skipping every second frame. This is why it nevers hits the bottom of the screen.

    is the difference between 30 and 60 really that great?

    • @zippeduniform3
      @zippeduniform3 Před 8 lety +6

      +NintendoGraham It depends on the scenario. For example, movies are still shot at 24 FPS to this day (very few movies going as high as 48). The reason for this is that 24 FPS is just enough for the brain to view the video smooth enough that it doesn't feel like viewing a series of images frame by frame and not too high that every movement gives you a headaches. On the other hand, in the world of gaming, theres a very noticeable difference between 30 and 60 FPS. Some people notice this difference, some dont. It should also be noted that whilst some notice this difference, it doesnt necessarily bother them. Generally speaking, 30 FPS is acceptable for a game that doesnt have a lot of action going on it it, whereas a first person shooter will certainly feel lag when played at under 60 FPS. Hopefully that at least answered your question a little bit.

      @NintendoGraham Před 8 lety +1

      +zippeduniform3 Thanks, mate!

    • @AmnzeroUK
      @AmnzeroUK Před 8 lety +2

      +zippeduniform3 Something you didn't mention is also how cameras work in capturing video compared to how a game renders frames on a screen. A game renders each frame as a static image, with no blurring between frames, so a 30fps game will look MUCH more choppy than a film at the same frame rate, as films are shot with cameras which capture natural light in a way in which the motion translates the natural blurring effect of movement into each frame of footage.
      The easiest way to demonstrate this is to play a game on your computer, and without pausing, take a screenshot (printscreen). The image will be perfectly crisp and intelligible. Now, do the same while watching a movie on your computer. The image taken will most likely be somewhat blurry around areas of movement - ie naturally occurring motion blur, which compensates for the lower frame rates of films and which is closer to how our eyes function. If you were to take a film made from completely static frames (anime for example) then blur has to be added in post between frames to make the picture and movement seem more fluid and less like a flip book. This is why games benefit so much from much higher frame rates and often have added motion blur to make the motion seem more fluid, while films don't generally see as much of an increase in perceivable quality (hence the slow adoption of 48fps in cinema).
