ST-D is what happens when you replace good writing, good storytelling and good acting with a focus on THE MESSAGE. The Original Series very often presented controversial stories, but they always provided 2 sides, and ultimately let the *viewer* decide. ST-D grabs you by the throat, forces their ideology down your neck, and TELLS you HOW to think. Entertainment has been hijacked by Activism.

No it hasn’t. Besides maybe people who liked the show liked it because they were sick and tired of seeing the same old, same old, spouting the same old ideals and opinions that have been around for centuries. After all, the show was set in the 23rd snd 32nd centuries. You believe people would have brought all the current prejudices, biases, discriminations and bigotry that far into the future? And yet claim they want to explore new worlds and meet new species. It would be a huge contradiction.

As a big Star Trek fan, I've forced myself to watch Discovery as the storylines for each season has been the worst in Star Trek history! This season has the chance to add some sorely needed storytelling to Discovery! But I find myself watching interpersonal relationship storylines that take up 80% of the episodes with 10% for a big chase or fight scenes, leaving only 10% for storytelling. They have turned it into a Soap Opera set in space.

Totally agree! I keep wanting to like it but it’s just so bad. They spend too much time and money on big action scenes and forget Trek is really about the exploration of the human condition. First the crew was at each other’s throats and now they are saccharine sweet They can’t get the tone right. Every shot is overly dramatic, and hardly any episode explores deep subjects like every Trek series that came before and what makes the franchise great. Glad to see this show wrapping up.

Nobody challenge that you, Kate Mulgrew/Janeway, has been one of the best rolls in Star Trek sagas.
That stated, the point from my side, is that in Discovery the forced many situations which, in my case that grew up with James T. Kirk (I'm 66 yo), I´d not interest at all.
TV 's Enterprise Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer. Movies 6 Kirk, 4 Picard and 3 New Kirk (Great roll of Chis
Pine, top brass selection). Stream Discovery Lorca/Pike/Saru/Burnham (never seen so many in same ship), ST Picard, New Words/Short Treks Pike. I saw them all several times and realize that in almost all of them the premise was (around), give or take, 50% Adventure/Action/Specs-Effects, 20% Fun, 30% Drama/Personal issues. Besides, I know for sure, that some episodes have/must be included, and that they do not do the essence of all series and are soft/irrelevant/light-hearted. And I understand that must be like this.
What I do not understand is why Discovery has been 35% Action/Specs-Effects, 5% Fun and 60% (Sixty percent!) Dramas/Philosophical Dramas/Interracial Dramas/Non-Binary Dramas. In fact, almost All episodes of Discovery are Half Soap Operas, with endlessly crying dialogues and that’s not the spirt of STAR TREK.
Last, but not least, is the fact of Leadership and Team. Even each Captain is THE principal roll, in almost all episodes of different Star Trek they move as a solid group. In case of Discovery I’ve noticed that all is around Burnham and perhaps she’s the same character of “Sasha” in The Walking Dead, which Burnham called (Quote) “A team player on the Outside, but a loner on the Inside” (Unquote). And before some clueless delusional treated me as a phobic of some kind, I’m born in Argentina and raised by my Immigrant Grandparents and Parents with great open minds. For me is the same White/Black/Yellow/Pink/Green or whatever colour/race see or interact with.
Now I’ll purchase "The animates series", "Lower Decks" and "Prodigy" for my grandsons. Need them to start thinking a little more than our local schools use to teach.

The chase is boring and they plucked the villain lady Mal out of Farscape. The characters are hyper one dimensional. It should have been cancelled 5 seasons earlier. Star Trek has always been about finding solutions that are not war - Discovery gives us a horrible racist main character who starts a war because "It's the only language Klingons understand" and goes unpunished and gets universally praised. I can't believe this is so rarely called out. A present day equivalent would be a rogue military person dropping a nuke on an African country because "It's the only language the n*****s understand". This is just not acceptable.
Star Trek has always been somewhat believable - but Discovery gives us the magic mushrooms that instantly transport from any point to any other point (and yet we're supposed to believe the Federation was destroyed because all Dilithium crystals exploded - so why not just use the magic mushrooms instead? Or duplicate Romulan warp technology which for sure would have been known?)
Discovery, like the horrible reboot movies, lives on special effects only (and I admit they're well done). But its writing is horrible. I watch a show fornthe writing.

The only ground this show, "broke", was ensuring straight white males could only play the villains. Pike and Spock were the exceptions that proved the rule, but weren't in it for long anyway. Name one straight white male on the Discovery crew, who has been in it since the first episode. You can't.
In the original TOS pilot, Captain Pike commented on not being used to having women on the bridge. Strange New Worlds overcompensated by making the Enterprise a primarily female crew. I still enjoy these shows, but let's not pretend they're not feminist and LGBTQIA+ non-canon fan fiction, which are less inclusive than the previous Trek shows, all of which DID break social ground. Whether it's the first interracial kiss on TV, men wearing dresses as uniforms or having a more diverse group of captains than any other show, ever made.

.."groundbreaking" "historical"? I think I've tried to watch your notube posts before and again a misleading title, waste of time and you sound like you work for kurtzman himself. More like hysterical for noscovery was NOT true Gene Roddenberry Trek. Ok, here we go again..cbs decided it wanted to get into the streaming business so it thought, let's take a piece of it's new studio it bought which was called star trek that will have millions and millions of an already built in fan base that no matter if it's trek they will subscribe instantly, no questions asked. But their mistake to go totally opposite of GR, give it to a guy who wrote bad scifi, threw in words like federation and warp drive, slapped the name trek on it yet used it to spew his progressive liberal socialist "woke" propaganda in the face of those fans who were not as stupid as he thought for they respected how Roddenberry presented real trek with ideas and let his audience decide on their own, not push it down their throats. Cost is the reason? Yep, because it will probably take the 5 seasons just to maybe break even. At least Lower Decks and a couple or strange old worlds is worth a try, but let's not mention the failure that was picacard and the last minute cheap marketing ploy that was the 3rd season to bring back the once great next gen cast with a story that could've been told in a two hour movie..bless there hearts, they looked bored. One day hopefully we will get real star trek back on tv but not as long as it's "kurtzman's trek"! Heck, we'll take Berman at this point

the dark truth is, the show is trying to be Buffy more than Star Trek. It also didnt help that it seems every season the show is backpaddling and desperately trying to appeal to different people. it doesnt really have a vision. And most of the characters are simply not interesting or likable (for lack of meaningful things to do). I m sure the writers have their strengths, but they simply can t write good Star Trek. Where is the allegorical storytelling, the philosophical depth, the emcoumter with the strange and alien? Star Trek wasnt doing that in every episode and also not always well, but it was doing it most of the time and they were trying to do it well. Discovery doesnt know what it wants to do or be and was always bumbling around and sadly never really found its voice - in my opinion.
last but not least, anyone who does like the show and to whom this show means something isnt wrong and I like that you get something out of it, but I just dont t see it…

Kate Mulgrew/Janeway, has been one of the best rolls in Star Trek sagas.
That stated, the point from my side, is that in Discovery they forced many situations which, in my case that grew up with James T. Kirk (I'm 66 yo), I´d not interest at all.
TV 's Enterprise Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer. Movies 6 Kirk, 4 Picard and 3 New Kirk (Great roll of Chis Pine, top brass selection).
Need them to start thinking a little more than the Argentine schools use to teach.

Strange that a ST fan isn't aware that DEI is the cornerstone of TOS. It is central to the purpose of the original series. HOW did you miss it. Also it wouldn't be relevant if ot ignored todays awakenings. It HAS to expand because a federation that will have so many species from all over the universe would HAVE to forever be reshaping itself to accomodate newness.
HOW and WHY are you even a fan?????

    • @patricklonski
      @patricklonski Před měsícem

I'm watching this series because I am an actual fan. I watched TOS when it first hit television. Diversity of characters was a given part of the series. It was never THE FOCUS. It was just there as part of the reality. There was no story in seasons 3 and 4 just a race to see how many tropes from the left could be crammed into 40 minutes. The series was good (not great) for season 1 and 2. Seasons 3 and 4 were absolute garbage, They focused on being gay and of course transgenderism not on adventure or even good story lines. Season 5 has now begun, watching episodes 1 and 2 gave me hope that the final season would be good. Hopes were dashed by episode 3 were the focus was back to the season 4 focus. Take a look at some of the critiques here. No one is saying it was the focus on DEI that made this series terrible but you can read between the lines. They are saying the series is bad, and it is. An example of much better is Strange New Worlds. Let me say one more thing that I am sure will trigger you too. SOME of the cast will continue to have long, decent or even stellar acting careers. Yeoh, Green, Jones, Fehr and Cruz will obviously be in demand for a long time. Other characters who are the focus of this series will never work consistently in larger productions again. They are one dimensional actors whose only function was to check off a box on the series writer's left wing bonifides score card.

Ironically enough, it was “Star Trek Transformers” or “Star Wars Trek” (the style of discovery’s storytelling which is visceral, overly loud and under-cerebral) that ensure I will never rewatch this anomalous blip in the storytelling style of Star Trek.
It often feels like Kurtzman et al tried to turn the JJ Abram’s-verse into the “Marvel cinematic universe, Star Trek edition”
Huge turn off for people who want to hear about the scientific aspects of Star Trek, who love the thought provoking stories that challenge your conceptions of normality and reality.
This discovery experiment was essentially the marvel cinematic universe hydraulically pressed ontop of the Star trek brand.
It’s almost sad that the ambitious leaps in representation were grafted onto such a “meathead cinematic universe” type of series. It cheapens the real representational victories.
Star Trek Legacy should be re-named and unroll the lore of the 25th to 26th century Milky Way, it should show the evolution of war to transwarp and slipstream travel, the dynamics of the newly peaceful founder’s empire in the gamma quadrant with explorations of the higher evolved species and travel to other galaxies with careful scientifically advised storylines about the likely physical phenomena expected of such travels.
We should learn about giant and hypergiant stars, the black hole in the middle of our Milky Way and the intensely hot and hostile environment of the galactic core.
These and many more lines of narrative treasure await a renaissance-evolution of the berman-era Star Trek realities.
Leave transformers, the marvel comics and iron man style fantasy to those franchises to cater to visceral meat head audiences.
You can still have representation of minorities in the golden age storytelling style of Star Trek.

it's a matter of focus. In TOS there were morality tales, but they were never 'extreme left' garbage and a total absorption in THE MESSAGE, everyone's neurosis, and political correctness just gone ridiculous. All these things in Kurtzman Trek are to the total exclusion of the STORY.
The writers are clearly entirely concerned with modern day hyperpolitical messaging than decent writing.

  • @ViroVV
    @ViroVV Před měsícem +2

    So much bait.
The answers are obvious because there is not just one as there are multiple reasons.
Show cost. Keeping doug Jones alone has to be a hefty sum because of his name recognition. The cast also kept growing and STD was the show with the most effects, live and computer generated as well as the most prosthetics. Thats a LOT of expenses.
However thats not the ONLY aspect of cost. You have to understand that Paramount is in a tough financial spot right now. They are shedding less profitable shows weighed against their production cost vs total views. Ultimately this puts trek at high cost lower ROI when compared to other LA productions like Yellowstone and 10k spinoffs. Cause horses and open air sets on location are comparatively cheap to CGI, sets and pyro.
All of this because Paramount is not making its ends meet. Theyve been eyeing merger/acquisition/partnership with groups like Warnerbros amazon and netflix. THis is a common measure seen before these types of agreements.
Ultimately the truth is that out of all this gen of trek shows, STD was the worst received. That is not the same as like/dislike. From the word Go STD has generated no end of disdain because of some illogical reasons (its to dark, its not real trek) to genuine and legitimate complaints (like its seasonal "course corrections", to its very subversively hateful agenda and damage being done to establish canon). STD has by far the most baggage of any of this gen of trek. It has the lowest engagement levels from legacy trek fans. While it did bring in some new fans, (predominantly LGBT) it also ran off far more original and TNG era fans. While not really making a dent in the core demo they were seeking which is youth age demographics because to kids , YA, trek seems antiquated and the weight of 900 hours plus 13 films worth of homework just to get fuly up to speed is a huge investment young audiences are not likely to invest into.
Add to this the number of products they produced to sell but because of piss poor marketing of them, few people were buying them resulting in bleeding money from nerd cultures biggest cash cow
So when you have a show not living up to expectations, Has some of the highest costs of any of this gen of trek, Not showing a clear cut fanbase supporting it, A lack of word of mouth through things like meme creation It was definitely time to bring out the axe and effectively reboot the STD team toward the Academy project which will take much of the STD visual aesthetics, scale down the cast for young up and comers in the business, massively scaling back the LGBT pandering cause they look at Academy as a vehicle to hopefully lean on that YA demographic through CW style sex in casting and similar to SNW more episodic nature allows viewers to more readily drop in/drop out which will alos allow them to effectively accomplish much of what fans want for a Legacy show, only it will be from the angle of teaching the history of this new massive lost era.
Now, that said, this is also helping to bring this "phase" of nu trek to a close with the absolutely premature cancellation of beloved Lower Decks, and offloading of the final season of Prodigy to netflix (cause the likelihood of paramount allowing another company lease out canon rights is incredibly slim)
So there are a LOT of variables in this equation but it is very clear that they are either looking to get out of trek and shelf it for another generation (cause this gen is already up to 7 years and 250+ episodes compared to the TNG legacy era of 25 seasons across 18 years and almost 250 episodes. We did not realize but we are in a golden age of trek and it is beginning to at the very least slow down to a more realistic level which will make it easier to shop for networks due to less baggage and trek is a trunk full of baggage to say the least.

This didn't fit between ENT and TOS in any way. The Klingons were a travesty! There was no reason to make Burnham Spock's sister other than to try to boost her popularity with generations-long fans who saw nothing familiar in this series. Add to that the pay-wall of having to subscribe to their channel for that one series alone (averaging only 13 episodes per year). I thought ST-D was the best yet. That anyone finds it hard to "suspend belief" watching science fiction is not just Duh ironic, but laughable. The multi seasonal singular plotline worked (and that's all it had to do was "work") and takes better than average writing than just "Oh, we're going somewhere else this episode" That you are distracted Michael Burnham is a Black woman, ST's first Black female lead and Starfleet captain - That's a you problem. Sonequa Martin-Green ROCKED IT! Arguably the best lead & Captain ever. You're cheating yourself missing her portrayal
Michelle Yeoh's Georgiou damn near stole the whole series. Tilly, ROCKED IT! Tig Notaro stole every scene she in even if she only had one line. Special Effects- Best yet. Best advances, best fights, best ships, best flying Off the chain. And the LGBTQ stuff can be distracting, but as a hetero male Star Trek fan, I can't think of one time when it took away from plot or action. Adira's entire sxuality arc is in one line "Call me they" That's it. There's not a single story line about anyone being gay, Black, Green, Vulcan, lactose intolerant or otherwise. The diverse inclusion is obvious, and if that bothered you - what Star Treks have you been watching? The only storyline about what anyone "is" is Saru and the Kelpians. Other than that, everyone else just "was" what they are. And considering Startrek has played around with non normative/non binary sxualities before, it simply being in Discovery must have struck a personal prejudice. I wonder if some felt the females were too prominent, but Lt Stamets, Saru, space cowboy Captain "Big Pimpin" Pike, and Book are some of the coolest astronauts in the game. I still say best Trek thus far If you're a phobe, don't watch it

oh My, let me guess. Terrible season 4, too may woke actors, way too much crying, Bad story lines, Inconsistent details, WAY too many female ...hmmm Hero's, are they really hero's??? Advertisers seeing that based on TOS this show's only connection, is the title. I am seeing hundreds of thousands of young girls rushing back to the original Barbie so they can get a real job where no matter how many promotions you get you don't have to cry, complain, connive or back stab every other person in your realm to get the job done. Despite the film already used, shot and in the books? maybe just cancelling it before it airs would be the best thing to happen to Star Trek the Franchise. This comes from a 60 year veteran of Star Trek , who's one and only letter to Hollywood was to not cancel the original series. Long live "good STAR TREK" not this mmm crap.

I decide for myself whether something is wasting my time, I don't need a CZcams video blog for that. No matter what the reviews say here, I'm totally excited about the new Star Trek Discovery season and I feel the same way about the new season of Strange new Worlds. In other words, I don't give a damn fuck about Star Trek reviews. People listen far too much to bullshit reviews instead of making up their own minds.

Season 4 got extremely bad with shoving the woke down our throats. Star Trek has always pushed the discussion about social issues and that was a good thing. At the same time, they allowed the audience to form their own thoughts on what was discussed. Star Trek Discovery shoves it down your throat and gives the unspoken directive that you must comply.
I stopped watching in season 4 when the ship computer started having feelings and they had to talk it into doing its job because it was afraid during a life and death situation. WTH?
I wanted to love it, but eventually fast forwarded through half the show due to over emotional scenes and wokeness.

Why does Discovery keep presenting references to past Star Trek series? It's almost as if the series can't stand on its own and has to refer to something bigger and better. It can't compete with those other shows. I know other Star Trek series has referenced others but nowhere near as much as Discovery. Star Trek Discovery is a mere shadow of every other series. I gave it a chance but it failed miserably.

Are there no positive comments or did you simply not include them? I loved this show, and if they had a 6th season, my family and I would be watching it. I came to the show late. Found it by accident. Was it perfect, no, but remember that the original Star Trek did not last long. Just as Star Trek tried to show that there are ways to get along on the ship and in the world, Star Trek Discovery did the same. There seem to be a bunch of haters out there.

I didn't hate it. It wasn't as good as TNG but it was better than Voyager. The effects and 4K were nice even if the storytelling was a bit weak at times. Yes the wokeness was uncomfortable, but for me it's because it didn't flow and felt forced (I think some of the loudest in the comments are fighting demons). Yes I resumed watching it because I ran out of other good shows, but it is a good show. Would have enjoyed a season 6 and 7. I think more people would watch if they just leased it to Netflix or Hulu instead of trying to make Paramount+ a thing. Maybe they should ask pirate hosts for the actual numbers.

STD has a young-adult, unprofessional, too-woke, emotionally immature, annoyingly toddler-based set of characters. In each and every episode they constantly start to jabber on the semi-wise choices we all must make to become the Huey, Dewey, and Louie they all want to be. Even in extreme time-critical situations, they start to tell eachother how much they appreciate their friendship. It's more than unbelievable; it's unconvincing how a crew can function when every moment they start to sob and exchange pubescent wisdom. The word disappointing doesn't cover it - it's an affront to each and every serious sci-fi series ever made. The eye-candy is nice, but the characters, conversations, decisions, plots & plot twists, and relationships are shameful to any self-respecting writer in this genre.

Disco should had been cancelled after season 1! It's problem is and always has been is that it's too gay. Over-representation of that does not represent what we are today. Plus they make up the story to fit the agenda. Spock has a sister? And she's black? Where in Star Trek has that ever been true. It's totally stupid! And to keep pounding their message speaks of an agenda. So please don't tell me how great it is when there's true Trek fans that think it's nothing but agenda fillled garbage!

Star Trek discoveries biggest flaw. You have a too emotional Captain I mean when you think about itI mean The captain's too busy crying about her boyfriend, instead of worrying about the whole crew.
That should NEVER have been a role that was played in any Star Trek franchise That's the TV show's biggest flaw. They tried catering to a bunch of people that weren't even gender aware of themself. So of course the show got lost real quick.

Look, I also hated the first seasons as mush as the next Trekkie. STD started loud, cynical, despicable and disrespectful towards everything Star Trek stoods for - a feat even JJ Abrahams didn't allow himself doing with the reboot movies. I am not even gonna mention the corporate mandated obvious woke activism inserted in it. However I have to admit they tried to course correct at some point in Season 4 and 5. Yeah, it looks and feels clumsy, pathetic and obviously not very adored by the activist showrunners, but there was an attempt and I gotta respect that. Not that it made the show really good and worthy of the Star Trek name, not at all, but at least it stopped pisseing me off everytime looking at each new episode and made me actually care a bit about the characters and the future of The Federation. I just started Season 5 out of pure curiosity and so far it looks watchable, albeit obviously nostalgia baiting and recycling ideas from far superior TNG episodes. If the showrunners resist their inherent urge to disrespect Picard yet again and actually use his legacy for something useful as an overall plot device to wrap the whole season my time might not be wasted after all.

I got 20 minutes into Ep 1 Season 1. That was all it took. Same, apparently for my friend Richard Arnold (Gene Roddenberry's archivist & consultant on TNG). He sat down to watch STD with his legal pad (as he did with all new Trek), and after 20 minutes he had 4 pages of notes, then gave up.
