Scott can sing from bass right up to tenor (and falsetto), he has incredible range. Mitch has a 6 octave range. Kirstin sits naturally in the higher range, but has a beautiful lower tone. Kevin not only beatboxes, but has a beautiful tenor voice, while Matt is technically their bass, but can get a falsetto out too. All of them are mad talented, and that's not including the instruments they can play AND their songwriting skills. Avi (from the original line up) is a bassundo profundo ( he is classically trained), but has a gorgeous baritone to tenor range too.
Looking forward to following your PTX journey! For something different, try 'Can't Hold Us'. Yes, they can also rap. 😁

Here’s a challenge for hardcore Pentaholics: relisten to Mad World, listening for Kirstie’s parts, Mitch’s parts, and Kevin’s parts, individually (multiple watches required), to hear the different high harmonic lines. Since there’s no beatboxing, and it’s largely 5-part harmony, Kevin’s high tone is the most undervalued part of that song. His solos may be great, but where he really shines (aside from ALL of his instrumentation, percussion or otherwise) is in their 5-part harmony sections (including harmonizing on the high parts of “let me goooo,” in Bohemian Rhapsody). Kevin really is the glue that makes Pentatonix Pentatonix. The day Scott saw the celloboxing vid, and said “That’s our missing piece,” should be a national holiday.

I love watching reactors that discover PTX and go down the rabbit hole. I look forward to seeing other PTX reactions form you. A quick run down of the group. On the video from left to right, Matt, Kirstin, Scott, Mitch and Kevin. Matt replaced Avi in 2018 when Avi left the group, amicably so you'll see Avi in the older videos and Matt in the newer ones. People always think there are more changes to the people than that but Mitch and Kirstin change looks all the time. Kevin will bring out Beyonce (his cello) in some songs and beat boxes at the same time..."celloboxing". You'll get requests for a whole range of songs to react to but two of my favorites are The Prayer and Thank You.

You might want to listen to a young Russian singer - Diana Ankudinova who is 18 years old in this video, singing a very unique cover of Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling In Love. She's a contralto, and a commanding stage presence.
    czcams.com/video/e28Cmrx-i5A/video.html
This performance was from a Russian show that aired last fall, and ran for 9 weeks. There were 9 singers who were also the judges and critiqued each other. There were 9 genres of music they had to perform over the course off the show. Thus Diana sang in many different styles.
Diana (dee-ah-na) was abandoned by her abusive mother at the age 3 at a bus stop in the winter with a broken collarbone and placed in an orphanage, diagnosed with cognitive impairment. Her adoptive mother had her enroll in singing lessons to help with some speech problems due to abuse and neglect. Her singing talent was immediately noticed and the rest, as they say, is history.

His name is Scott Hoying, and he is their baritone. He also does the bass line whenever first Avi and now Matt, the two basses they have had and the only personnel change they have made sang lead. Her name is Kirsten Maldonado, and she is their mezzo-soprano and their best belter. The black guy on the right side in the darker coat is Kevin Olusola. He is a tenor and their beatboxer. The black guy on the left in the white coat is Matt Sallee. He is their current bass. And finally, Mitch Grassi is a countertenor of extraordinary control and range. Their original bass was Avi Kaplan. The parting of ways was amicable and was because he had family health issues with his mother.

To hear how high Scott (aka Devlin) can go in his falsetto, listen to their cover of Ariana Grande's Problem - but watch the version for 3FM Live, to see how they perform it live. And Mitch does the rap section without a flaw!
You've heard some of Mitch's beautiful high tenor/countertenor notes, but a great one to hear him sing high throughout most of the song is The Prayer. That also gives you another example of Scott's lower register - while he's singing in Italian!
Kirstie is a mezzo soprano, and can reach both some amazing highs, and can sing low comfortably - check out Rather Be, where she has the lead for the entire song, and sings most of it in her lower register. For an example of highs, check out the video of Seasons of Love, recorded live for PBS Independence Day celebration in 2021 - her final run is amazing!
Matt (in the white jacket) is the "new" bass, joining the group in 2017 after the original bass Avi Kaplan left amicably for personal reasons (Avi recently released his first album for his growing solo career). You heard Matt pop down to his bass range at the end of his solo, but he can go a lot deeper than that - just listen for the bass line in about any song. And he's got an amazing falsetto as well - check out When You Wish Upon A Star has no official video, but there's a "Yule Log" video. And Kirstie also finishes up that song with some amazing high notes as well!
Kevin (the beatboxer) has a beautiful tenor voice. While he's not as high as Mitch, his falsetto can actually hit as high or higher than Mitch. The best example is their cover of John Lennon's Imagine.

  • @dennislbrown
    @dennislbrown Před rokem +1

Scott (the guy in the middle, who started the song) is a baritone with extended range on both the top and bottom of his range, including a respectable falsetto. He fills in for the bass when the bass is singing up front. He gets a little less notice than some of the others, but he is the "story teller" of the group (super clean, clear voice perfect for projecting lyrics) and often carries the backbone of the leads.

If you watch 'Problem' though - Scott goes as high as Mitch and Mitch has admitted that Kevin (the beatboxer) can sing even higher than him! If you want another one that tugs at the heart string and shows off Mitch and Scott - watch The Prayer (it's a cover of Celine Dion and Andrea Boccelli) and Scott sings in Italian in it. It's the most beautiful piece I've ever heard, closely followed by their version of Hallelujah and this one.

Kevin (beatboxer, cellist , tenor) was discovered on CZcams by Scott from Kevin’s channel where he plays the cello and does beatboxing at the same time. Mitch and Kirstie routinely cover for one another when they are singing lead, as do Matt/Avi and Scott when they are singing the lead. With the generous overlap in their ranges, they have the ability to ebb and flow with their voices without leaving any gaps when one steps to the fore. And even though we never really see it in the videos, in the live shows, Matt and Scott are pretty good beatboxers and can cover the basics for Kevin when he steps up to sing lead for the small parts he does.

Kevin, the beatboxer, does throat bass - very rarely because it can cause damage - in songs like Love Again and Problem... which is basically the beatboxer doing the bass like you were talking about, even though it's not a note he can "sing". He also adds the high background in some songs because he is a tenor... naturally lower than Mitch's but with a very high falsetto. As far as switching it up... their current bass, Matt, adds the high note at the end of their live performance of Joyful, Joyful. And Mitch does a pretty respectable low A2 for Take On Me. You're right, though, every member of PTX has at least a 4 octave range.

I really enjoyed your reaction. Scott (Devlin) and the rest of the guys outdid themselves here. You really should pay more attention to them. I particularly noticed Matt on this one because the was the first PTX video I saw him on. Thanks for posting.

I cannot wait until you travel down the rabbit hole of PTX. Might I suggest you follow their discography from beginning to now? They have grown so much. Check out Aha, and the live version. Mitch goes off the chain and Avi blew the speakers up during the show. I also encourage you to look at Hallelulah Live. You wanted to know if they were the same live as in recordings. They do not do songs they cannot do live, FULL STOP Their covers of Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine and a lot of their originals are pretty amazing. PLEASE MAKE UP A PLAYLIST OF THEIR VIDEOS? I love to come back and re-watch them. Thank you for sharing your love of music! I subscribed to look forward to more of them. Also, for copyright issues, I suggest you place a blurring vision, or darken the video. Us Pentaholics are used to their music being blocked. Do whatever you need to do to get the videos shared.

Also, making a video transparent like you did is a good idea. But I would keep the lettering you put on there solid and not transparent. And it helps to pause a couple times throughout the video to avoid copyright. Remember, we come for your reaction, not the video. We've all seen the video several times.

I'm new to your channel, so I don't know if you've already seen their version of "Havana"; you can't miss the beat & Kevin "plays" a cornet.

  • @milissaleatherwood6837

You should watch Kevin's channel (he's the beat boxer). He does looping. Literally a one man band.

Having trouble uploading? Try making the original video more transparent, or putting type over it. Pentaholics expect some pausing mid-song, as well. We know it's irksome to have to figure out work-a-rounds, but the fan base is huge, we've watched the original PTX versions and now it's your reaction we look for.

From your comments it sounds like you ran into some copyright issues with posting PTX stuff. In addition to the filter, you may want to pause periodically & comment. You can always rewind a bit to get back to the beginning of a phrase. Less likely to get blocked this way.

OK, perhaps a bit early on your journey down the rabbit hole, but not too much. Perhaps check out the "Beginners Guide to Pentatonix" czcams.com/video/lDxIfwfCmQE/video.html which introduces each member with a few clips of songs they solo. This is followed by a brief history of the group up to a couple of years ago when this was made.
