- Making a pecan stain color chip for recreating a wood stain color later on, or building a wood stain color library for matching colors.
Solvent based Liquid Dyes were used in the video with the following formula:
Pecan Stain Color:
1/4 Cup Lacquer Thinner
1/8th tsp Yellow Amber Dye
4 Drops of Crimson Red Dye
1 Drop Royal Blue Dye
1 Drop Walnut Brown Dye
To Recreate a larger formula - Say to an 8 ounce formula:
8/2 = 4
The (8) is the formula size you want and the (2) is the current formula size, so the (4) becomes the multiplier so everything gets multiplied by 4 - Example:
1/8 x 4 = 1/2 tsp Yellow Amber Dye
4 x 4 = 16 Drops Crimson Red Dye
1 x 4 = 4 drops Royal Blue Dye
1 x 4 = 4 Drops Walnut Brown Dye
Keda Liquid Dyes were used in this video, but this could also work on pretty much any mixed wood stain or wood dye formula.

You're too hard on yourself- your videos are always great! Seriously, you've mastered the art of dyeing wood. Even if it's a color I'd never use I still watch your videos because your results are consistently stunning. Love the tape idea you showed here, that's a smart idea that I'll definitely use. Your expertise & hard work shows- keep up the great work!
Great video! Loved the tap idea and sealing the back for a master color splotch, thanks.
I wrote on the back and from handling writing wore off. I learn something new everyday!
Thanks for the video a n d you are doing a wonderful job! Pam
PS, Love the dye kits!
Sorry Guys! I know this isnt my best work... I was having all kinds of troubles with my video card. I must have jacked something up deleting video sequences from the card through my PC. Anyways, hope it helps out somewhat.
Keda Wood Dye looks fine to me. What's up brother? Been almost a year and I started turning again. Been a long horrible ride. I'm done with it! Drop me a line.......
How do you keep all of the dye on your hands ? I can use it one time and it looks like Walt Disney threw up on my hands.
Excellent! thx!
Happy I could help out! Thank you for watching.
Who the heck would thumbs down a good wood finishing tip for the love of all that is good? Maybe someone not understanding English? Geez! Great vid - Please keep it up my friend! I LOVE these wood dyes, and you do an awesome job! Thanx for all you do!
Excellent video even thought you dont think it is !! :)
What kind of coverage from a liquid-based formula can I expect? For example, say I want to stain the exterior of a cabinet about 12 square feet of material.
Wow, just found this video, that is just the color I am looking for! I ordered your powder dye kit. I am going to dye 1 solid body guitar so 8 oz should be more than enough. Is the concentration in the powder similar to the liquid? Are the colors similar ? At any rate your formula at least gives me a pretty good idea of relative values.
almix1952 oh absolutely! One powder kit will probably make like 20 guitars - maybe even 30. Actually, the Brown in the powders is a much more Golden Brown color, than the Walnut Brown color in the liquid dye kit. Also, the yellow will turn more amber in color with a little higher dose, whereas the powders have a more bright yellow look (even though the powder has a slight orange tint), and the red liquid dye is a truer red on more woods, even if sanded with a little huger grit sandpaper like 180 - 220 I would say for the powders, this color would be more like:
6 ounces 70% rubbing alcohol (or just warm water would work too, but I would recommend the rubbing alcohol for this color, just because it will have a little more vibrant look that way)
1/8 tsp Golden Brown
half of 1/8 tsp Yellow
and about a pea size of red
That should get you somewhat close and hope it helps out.
Thank you for watching!
Wow! Thanks for the quick response. So stoked about theses dyes, can't wait to get mixing it up . I probably better get some wood scraps to test on . Thanks again !
An update to my trying to recreate your Pecan color with the powder dye kit. My first try was way too yellow, almost a curry color or turmeric is probably more accurate. Due , I am sure to my inability to measure accurately. I would recommend to all users of the powder dye kits to invest in a special set of measuring spoons, with 1/16th, 1/32, and even 1/64th. I found out that Bed Bath and Beyond has such a set. You can always add but you can not subtract. My first attempt wound up too yellow as I have mentioned and not quite dark enough for my project. I judiciously added a tad of black and a tad of red and wound up with something that was close enough to use. By coincidence it almost exactly matched my guitar neck that was roasted maple with a finish of tru-oil on it.I will indeed be singing the virtues of your Keda Dye Kits to all who will listen. Thanks again!
