  • Mary Lee & The Honkey Donkeys perform "Wildwood Flower", the famous traditional American folk classic, first recorded by Sara Carter and The Carter Family in 1928 and played countlessly by Mother Maybelle and The Carter Sisters. The Carter version was a variant of the folk poem song "I'll Twine 'Mid the Ringlets", written in 1860 by Joseph Webster and Maud Irving.
Recorded September 2020 and filmed in the hilly countryside near Rome, Italy.

MARY LEE & THE HONKEY DONKEYS:
    Mary Lee: lead vocals, fiddle
    Luciano Micheli: guitar, backing vocals
    Light Palone: double bass
    LYRICS:
Oh I'll twine with my mingles and waving black hair
With the roses so red and the lilies so fair
And the myrtles so bright with the emerald dew
The pale and the leader and eyes look like blue
I will dance I will sing and my laugh shall be gay
I will charm every heart in each crown I will sway
When I woke from my dreaming my idols were clay
All portion of love had all blown away
Oh he taught me to love him and promised to love
And to cherish me over all others above
How my heart is now wondering no misery can tell
He left me no warning no words of farewell
Oh he taught me to love him and call me his flower
That was blooming to cheer him through life's dreary hour
How I long to see him and regret the dark hour
He's gone and neglected his pale wildwood flower

Love this! This was my grandfather's favourite tune he used to play at family + friends gatherings. Back when we played cards around a table with him playing his violin, his friend playing a harmonica and 12 year old me playing the spoons. No electronics required. Great times!
I love her voice, she has that classic sound with beauty to boot. Very nice.

What a perfect version of this song. She has the Carter "vibrato" in her voice combined with an upright bass and flat top guitar you can not get a better combo to recreate the Carter Family Fold Clinch Mountain style folk music. Real nice touch using the fiddle also.

Oh, that's a pleasure! Marry is such a beautiful lady and she can sing the good old American country music so beautifully. Her violin has such a natural sound as made for country music. I don't think Stradivari's violin would be suitable for this purpose.

@@maryleecaesarscowboys Dear Marry. My name is Miroslav. How glad I am that you are from the Netherlands. Many tourists from the Netherlands come to the Czechia for holidays in summer and winter. We once played with a band near here in a caravan park. Dutch tourists around us. One elderly gentleman - a pensioner in a wheelchair. Amazing person. He was a former sailor on an ocean liner. He was with his wife. He sailed on a merchant ship from the Netherlands to North and South America. He told me about his work and of course about the music. He is said to have played the accordion as a sailor. On request, we played several songs from the Irish and Scottish repertoire. He cried with joy. A meeting I will remember for the rest of my life. Go ahead with the country music !
