We have had hummingbirds in our yard for a decade and have never seen them use any bird house. The nests are very small and they look for good hiding places. Last year one must have dropped out of a tree onto my driveway, empty. These humming bird nesting boxes will look pretty in a yard, but doubtful to attract a hummingbird unless you can get it way up in a tree.

I wasn't. I had though about going or maybe selling my little houses on consignment in town.
If you expect a hummer to actually use this you should have used 3 small screwa to hold the REMOVEABLE plug for cleaning. Also most hummer houses do not use a perch since the birds tend to land in the "doorway".

However; some of the handy-craft skills in the way that you work, are a big bit scary ... !
In the way that you use two separate drills; if you were to slip; and in both cases, the drill bits are under pressure (once the slip starts; you would not be able to stop it, it will happen so quick) ... the drill bit will go right through your hand ... !!!
Especially that 'forstner' bit; that will rip your hand to pieces ... !
That will mess up your wood turning for a very long time ... !

While that is very cute, it is completely useless for hummingbirds as a home/nest because hummingbirds do not use birdhouses. However they will use the perch as long as it is at least 8-10 feet high as a safe resting place. Hummingbirds only use their own nests. That said it is very cute and I could see folks buying them for the decor in their yard. If they are very lucky a hummingbird may stop and rest on the perch from time to time but will not actually use the house. Still a very nice job of turning it. :)
What wood type do you usually use for these?
I use all kinds of different wood. Mostly western cedar. It seems to hold up a lot longer.
Loved the idea.
If this was used by humming birds the nest would have to be removed at the end of the season or the next season they won't reuse it.
So instead of glueing the bottom in perhaps turn a plug and pin it in? Just a thought.

These are just ornamental and cannot be used by hummingbirds. We call them hummingbird houses because they are tiny.

What size was the Forster bit you used to hollow the inside out?
I used a 1 inch and 3/8ths for hollowing the inside.

Do hummingbirds actually use them or are they just tiny works of art for viewer appreciation?
I don't think they use them. But it gives them an option for nesting. They make a great gift and decor for your yard. Easy and enjoyable to make. I sell lots of them on eBay.

I sell for 18.99 on eBay. Usually 20 to 25 of them a week.
